  • Publication number: 20250243837
Abstract: A turbine that includes a runner and a variable nozzle. The runner is configured to rotate about an axis of rotation. The variable nozzle is configured to produce a sheet flow when fluid passes through the variable nozzle toward the runner. The sheet flow has a circumferential length at an exit of the variable nozzle that is greater than a flow width at the exit of the variable nozzle. The flow width is adjustable. In other configurations, the sheet flow may be planar, conical, or cylindrical.

  • Patent number: 12275145
Abstract: Parallel variable stiffness actuators are disclosed. The parallel variable stiffness actuator can comprise a spring and a variable-stiffness mechanism. The variable-stiffness mechanism can be configured to modulate a stiffness of the parallel variable stiffness actuator. The parallel variable stiffness actuator can further comprise a direct-drive motor arranged in parallel with the spring. A force of the direct-drive motor can be applied directly to a load. Resonant energy accumulation methods implemented by a parallel variable stiffness actuator are also disclosed. A stiffness of a spring can be changed when there is no energy stored by the spring. A resonant energy accumulation method where a force of a direct-drive motor can be applied in resonance with the oscillatory motion, while the stiffness of the parallel variable stiffness actuator can be changed to keep the amplitude of the oscillatory motion nearly constant.

  • Publication number: 20240026945
Abstract: Various examples of systems, methods, and applications of variable stiffness springs are described. In one example, a variable stiffness joint apparatus can include a torsional spring; a variable stiffness mechanism comprising a self-locking mechanism and a linkage system, the self-locking mechanism comprising an auxiliary spring; and an actuator in communication with the auxiliary spring of the self-locking mechanism. When the actuator changes position, a force is applied to the auxiliary spring by the actuator and a stiffness is adjusted at an energy cost that is independent of the stiffness of the spring and the energy stored by the spring. In another example, a self-adjusting variable stiffness mechanism can include a compression spring. The energy stored by compressing the compression spring and the mechanism can self-adjust a stiffness to enable energy accumulation using a same maximal compression force which is not dependent on the energy accumulated in the spring.

  • Publication number: 20220118603
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a variable-stiffness floating spring mechanism. The variable-stiffness floating spring mechanism can change its stiffness without changing an energy stored by a spring. The variable-stiffness floating spring mechanism can amplify an output of a human user. The variable-stiffness floating spring mechanism can enable augmentation of physical performance beyond the physical capabilities of the human user.

  • Patent number: 11211760
Abstract: Aspects of the invention include a stutter step press-fit connector insertion process. A non-limiting example of a method includes applying a force to at least one press-fit pin for causing the press-fit pin to move in a direction of a through-hole of a printed circuit board, wherein a value of the force increases as the press-fit pin moves in the direction of the through-hole. In response to detecting contact between the press-fit pin and a surface profile of the through-hole, a first pause of the force is introduced for a pre-determined time interval, wherein the value of the force remains generally static during the pre-determined time interval. The force is reapplied to the press-fit pin upon completion of the time interval, wherein the value of the force increases during the reapplying until the press-fit pin is inserted into the through-hole.

  • Patent number: 11166401
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention include a dye and pry process for removing a surface mount technology (SMT) dual in-line memory module (DIMM) from card assemblies. Aspects of the invention include immersing a semiconductor package assembly in a solution comprising dye and placing the immersed semiconductor package assembly under vacuum pressure. Vacuum conditions ensure that the dye solution is pulled into any cracks in the solder formed between the semiconductor package assembly and the SMT DIMM. The package assembly is dried, and a dummy card stock is installed in the SMT DIMM using an epoxy. The SMT DIMM is then removed by applying a force to an exposed cavity between the dummy card stock and the semiconductor package assembly. The semiconductor package assembly and the SMT DIMM can then be inspected for the dye to locate cracks.
