  • Publication number: 20030208519
Abstract: In the multiplier, a partial product circuit generates a partial product based on a multiplicand operand and outputs of a Booth recoder circuit, which operates on a multiplier operand. The partial product circuit ANDs the multiplicand with a zero Booth recoded output, which indicates whether to zero out the multiplicand. An enable circuit selectively enables the multiplier circuit, and more particularly, disables the multiplier circuit by making the zero Booth recoded output indicate to zero out the multiplicand.

  • Patent number: 6612820
Abstract: A method and apparatus for compressing process fluids in a working chamber having a male and a female rotor, each supported by shafts in a first and a second bearing chamber maintained at low and high pressures at least equal to 90% of the low and high pressures in the working chamber, respectively. The compressor has a first pressurized lubrication reservoir connected to the first bearing chamber and a second pressurized lubrication reservoir connected to the second bearing chamber. The fluids in the working chamber, which may be corrosive, are kept out of the fluids in the bearing and gear chambers by labyrinth seals on the rotor shafts, the seals having grooves in communication with a pressurized buffer gas system. Leakage of buffer gas from the seals enters the bearing chambers and reservoirs, and is released from them at flow rates to control the bearing chamber pressures.

  • Publication number: 20030026347
Abstract: Path metric normalization in calculating trellis-based algorithms is improved by normalizing the path metric with an average value (rather than a maximum or a minimum) of the path metrics. Using an average rather than a maximum or a minimum provides various advantages without adversely affecting the execution of the trellis-based algorithm. Due to the relatively faster computation time available when an average is computed, average value normalization can be applied every cycle, because its critical path is less than that of the ACS unit.

  • Publication number: 20030028846
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing add-compare-select processing using carry-save arithmetic. Data compressors that operate based upon carry-save principles are utilized to render the correct result without requiring intermediate results to be resolved. Intermediate results are truncated to ensure that the dynamic range of the add-compare-select unit is not exceeded, whilst ensuring that the resolution of the intermediate results is not adversely affected. The computation of two competing paths is delayed and only the difference is computed directly, resulting in a reduction of the propagation path through the add-compare-select unit.

  • Publication number: 20020077966
Abstract: A method and system for offering a personalised financial product to a user is described. Data is obtained from a user and used to determine profitability characteristics for the user. From the profitability characteristics, a plurality of inter-related cost-benefit parameters for the financial product are determined. The parameter settings are changeable by the user, a change to one parameter setting having a corresponding effect on one or more of the other parameter settings determined by the inter-relationship. Once the user is happy with the settings for the cost-benefit parameters, a financial product can be created having characteristics based on the parameter settings. Subsequent management of the product and changes to the parameter settings is also discussed.

  • Patent number: 4934860
Abstract: A support arrangement which allows pivoting of a non-rotatable shaft has a flexure structure and a pair of axially-displaced inner and outer hubs respectively connected to, and disposed inwardly and outwardly of, the flexure structure. The flexure structure is composed of a disk-shaped flexural elements disposed in stacked, axially spaced relation to one another and connected peripherally one to the next. The flexural elements together define a frictionless, laterally stiff, fulcrum or pivot point about which the shaft can pivot through a predefined range of angular motion. The inner hub is attached to an inner end one of the flexural elements at an interior peripheral edge thereof, whereas the outer hub is attached to an outer end one of the flexural elements at an exterior peripheral edge thereof. The shaft extends axially through the bores in the hubs and an opening in the flexure structure along a common axis, and is rigidly attached to the inner hub.

  • Patent number: 4670159
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for obtaining purified water from wet sludges and slurries of solid materials by treating these materials with a clathrate forming agent at a temperature above the freezing point of water to form a solid clathrate and dewatered solid material. The clathrate and solid material are then separated and the clathrate decomposed to give purified water and clathrate forming agent.

  • Patent number: 4483259
Abstract: A method and composition are described for catalytically converting unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and reducing nitrogen oxides to nitrogen during or subsequent to the combustion of fossil fuels while adsorbing sulfur oxides. The method and composition of the invention are also useful for treating reducing gases containing one or more of hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and carbonyl sulfide to reduce these gaseous components to non-polluting components such as nitrogen, hydrogen, and water while adsorbing sulfur so that it can be removed from the system. The method and composition of the invention are especially characterized by their use to remove polluting gaseous components from fossil fuels during combustion or subsequent to combustion or from reducing gases and in various stages as long as the catalyst adsorbent system of the invention is brought into contact with the gaseous contaminants being removed.

  • Patent number: 3983829
Abstract: The stern construction has an open channel let in to each side of the hull. The channel merges with the hull at its forward end and terminates in front of the upper part of the propeller disc at its rear end. The lower side of the channel is formed by a depending part of the hull which houses the tailshaft. The upper edge of each channel joins the part of the hull above the channel along a knuckle line. The upper side of the channel is disposed at an angle of inclination to the horizontal which decreases towards the rear of the ship so as to intercept the wake of the ship progressively and divert it into the upper part of the propeller disc. The invention is applicable to full bodied ships such as tankers.
