Patent number: 9080352Abstract: A door handle assembly for a vehicle door includes a door handle operated using a controller and sensors. In the door interior, an upper portion of a swing arm connects to a first post and a second post portion of the door handle. The lower portion of the swing arm, rotably attached to a shaft on the inner door, pivots between an extended and retracted position. When an extension force sensor contacts the upper portion of the arm, the extension force sensor on the inner door surface generates an extension force response signal. A retraction force sensor on the lower portion of the arm generates a retraction force response signal when the retraction force sensor on the lower portion of the arm contacts a flush adjuster rod. Both extension and retraction force response signals are used by the controller to operate the door handle.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2012Date of Patent: July 14, 2015Assignee: Tesla Motors, Inc.Inventors: Joris Aerts, Adam S. Patent number: 8935053Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide for controlling a hood latch using an electrically actuated primary hood latch and an electrically actuated secondary hood latch. To open the hood of the vehicle, a person presses a hood release button. Before attempting to release either the primary hood latch or secondary hood latch, a determination is made whether a vehicle speed of the vehicle is below a minimum vehicle speed threshold. If the vehicle speed is below this threshold, both the primary electrical actuator for the primary hood latch and the secondary electrical actuator for the secondary hood latch are triggered, thereby releasing hood from a closed position into an open position. When the vehicle speed is above this vehicle speed threshold, only the primary electrical actuator for primary hood latch is triggered; leaving the hood in a partially open position held in place by the secondary hood latch.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2012Date of Patent: January 13, 2015Assignee: Tesla Motors, Inc.Inventors: David Wheeler, Brenda Cucci, Adam S. Publication number: 20140272025Abstract: A beverage brewing device includes a pump that delivers water at a controlled rate to a heater via a conduit, and subsequently to a dispensing outlet for brewing a beverage. The heater heats the water to a target temperature designated by a user via a control interface. A thermal sensor measures the temperature of the heated water, and logic circuitry of a controller determines the presence of a deviation relative to a user-designated temperature. If a difference is detected, the controller affects the pump, correspondingly affecting a flow rate of water through the heater, until a water temperature measurement attains the designated temperature. A display device displays water temperature, flow rate, or user-selectable operational settings. Additionally, a bypass conduit having a user-adjustable flow control device diverts a portion of the heated water past a flavoring medium and into a brewed beverage reservoir at a controlled, user-variable flow rate.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 15, 2013Publication date: September 18, 2014Applicant: Boyd Coffee CompanyInventor: David Wheeler

Publication number: 20140249042Abstract: Viruses and other bioagents are of high medical and biodefense concern and their detection at concentrations well below the threshold necessary to cause health hazards continues to be a challenge with respect to sensitivity, specificity, and selectivity. Ideally, assays for accurate and real time detection of viral agents and other bioagents would not necessitate any pre-processing of the analyte, which would make them applicable for example to bodily fluids (blood, sputum) and man-made as well as naturally occurring bodies of water (pools, rivers). We describe herein a robust biosensor that combines the sensitivity of surface acoustic waves (SAW) generated at a frequency of 325 MHz with the specificity provided by antibodies and other ligands for the detection of viral agents.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 4, 2014Publication date: September 4, 2014Inventors: Richard S. Patent number: 8807807Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide a door handle assembly used in a vehicle door having an illumination module and illumination source that directs light in a first direction and a second direction using a pair of light pipes. The door handle from the door handle assembly includes a first illumination aperture oriented in the first direction and a second illumination aperture oriented in the second direction. As the illumination source generates light, the first light pipe receives a first portion of light and directs it toward a first illumination surface and the first illumination aperture in the first direction. By molding the second light pipe around the first light pipe, remaining light is captured from the illumination source as a second portion of light. The second portion of light reflects along the interior surfaces of the second light pipe towards the second illumination surface oriented in the second direction.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2012Date of Patent: August 19, 2014Assignee: Tesla Motors, Inc.Inventors: David Wheeler, Brenda Cucci, Adam S. Patent number: 8709791Abstract: A biosensor combining the sensitivity of surface acoustic waves (SAW) generated at a frequency of 325 MHz with the specificity provided by antibodies and other ligands for the detection of viral agents. In a preferred embodiment, a lithium tantalate based SAW transducer with silicon dioxide waveguide sensor platform featuring three test and one reference delay lines was used to adsorb antibodies directed against Coxsackie virus B4 or the negative-stranded category A bioagent Sin Nombre virus (SNV). Rapid detection of increasing concentrations of viral particles was linear over a range of order of magnitude for both viruses, and the sensor's selectivity for its target was not compromised by the presence of confounding Herpes Simplex virus type 1 The biosensor was able to delect SNV at doses lower than the load of virus typically found in a human patient suffering from hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS).Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 2008Date of Patent: April 29, 2014Assignees: STC.UNM, Sandia National LaboratoriesInventors: Richard S Larson, Brian Hjelle, Pam R Hall, David C Brown, Marco Bisoffi, Susan M Brozik, Darren W Branch, Thayne L Edwards, David Wheeler

Publication number: 20130239886Abstract: A device for locating holes in an electrical box comprising a stencil including hole through the center point of the stencil, whereby a mark can be made on the surface of the electrical box, through the hole at the center point of the stencil. The stencil further includes a circular outline marked on the surface of the stencil, corresponding to the diameter of the hole to be made through the electrical box. A mark concentrically surrounding the circular outline, corresponds to the required clearance for a electrical connection to the box. In use, the operator merely has to attach the stencil to the surface of the electrical box, and easily locate the center of a hole to be made in the box, and simultaneously determine if the hole is located at a point where there is adequate clearance for an electrical collar.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 19, 2012Publication date: September 19, 2013Inventor: David Wheeler

Patent number: 8304730Abstract: A method for measuring spectral characteristics includes capturing spectral-spatial data that includes radiance measurements over spectrally flat, highly emissive surface portions of a sample material and heater at least two different heater temperatures for transmissive and/or emissive configurations. Temperatures of the sample material and heater are determined at the different heater temperatures for each configuration using, in each instance, radiance measurements taken after the temperatures of the heater and sample material have both stabilized. The transmissivity of the sample material is determined using the temperatures determined in the transmissive configuration and spectral-spatial data collected at selected points of interest over the sample material. The emissivity of the sample material is determined using the temperatures determined in the emissive configuration, the spectral-spatial data collected at selected points of interest over the sample material, and the transmissivity.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2010Date of Patent: November 6, 2012Assignee: The Aerospace CorporationInventors: Nielson Wade Schulenburg, David Wheeler Warren, Donald J. Patent number: 8285688Abstract: A repository contains multiple versions of an object but only a single version of the object is supplied when a query is made. The single version is automatically selected from among a number of versions, based on a configuration associated with a workspace in which the query originates. The selected version is presented in a version resolved view, without exposing any information related to versioning of the object. A number of configurations are established, each configuration containing no more than one version of each object in the repository. However, only one configuration is associated with each workspace from which a query can originate. A single configuration is commonly associated with the workspaces of all developers. When developers decide that a set of objects in the repository is ready for use in live operation, the set of objects is “deployed” by copying the design time configuration to generate a new configuration.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 2008Date of Patent: October 9, 2012Assignee: Oracle International CorporationInventors: Janaki Krishnaswamy, Bhagat Vikram Nainani, Oleg Y.
