  • Publication number: 20040182161
Abstract: An apparatus examines the internal structure of an object disposed substantially in a medium such as air, which essentially totally reflects acoustic signals in the 1-200 MHz frequency range. The apparatus has an acoustic transducer that emits and receives acoustic signals in the 1-200 MHz frequency range and an acoustic coupler that acoustically couples the acoustic transducer to the object. The acoustic coupler is adapted to essentially retain a body of fluid such as water between a section of the surface of the object and the acoustic transducer for carrying acoustic signals in the 1-200 MHz frequency range between the acoustic transducer and the object.

  • Publication number: 20040136496
Abstract: In one embodiment, a portable apparatus adapted to be battery powered is used to scan an object in situ with x-rays and measure the intensity of the diffracted x-rays. The apparatus includes a scanning head having an x-ray source that is battery powered and an x-ray detector. The x-ray source and the x-ray detector are aligned in one of a plurality of predetermined alignments such that x-rays from the x-ray source are incident upon an object at a specific angle and the x-ray detector is aligned to detect x-rays that are diffracted at a specific angle, wherein the specific angle is a Bragg angle for a particular plane of atoms in the object.

  • Publication number: 20040059870
Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for maintaining data in a first cache and second cache, wherein a backup cache maintains a backup copy of data in the first cache, and wherein the first cache is used to cache a first set of data in a storage system and the second cache is used to cache a second set of data in the storage system. An unavailable state of the first cache is detected. In response to detecting the unavailable state, requests to the first set of data are blocked and at least one space in the second cache is allocated for data in the backup cache. Requests to the first set of data are allowed to proceed after the at least one space is allocated in the second cache and before the data in the backup cache is copied to the at least one allocated space in the second cache. The data from the backup cache is copied to the allocated at least one space in the second cache after the requests to the first set of data are allowed to proceed.

  • Publication number: 20030225948
Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for increasing processor utilization. A list of work is divided for processing among a plurality of processes, wherein a process is allocated a part of the list of work to process, and the processes execute in parallel. If a process completes the list of work allocated to the process then the process is made available on an available process queue. Before a process performs any work, the process reads the available process queue and determines if any process is available to share the work. If so, the work is split up between the examining process and the available process. In one implementation, the work involves scanning a cache and if necessary destage data.

  • Publication number: 20030172611
Abstract: An asphalt roof shingle assembled into a roof covering, presenting repetitive and uniform, geometric patterns. The shingle has an upper headlap portion and a lower visual feature region. The visual feature region includes a first visual feature and first and second transition portions of a second visual feature. The transition portions may be either identical or different in size and configuration. In another embodiment, a plurality of alternating, identically sized and shaped visual features, such as teeth and cutout spaces, is arranged in lineal fashion along the visual feature region. Transition portions of teeth or cutout spaces are located on opposing lateral edges of the tooth portion. When adjacent shingles are installed on a roof structure in abutting relation, laterally adjacent transition portions form a full-size visual feature, such as a tooth or a cutout space.

  • Patent number: 6416286
Abstract: A system and method for securing an integral closure bucket to a rotor wheel assembly. The integral closure bucket is inserted in a direction coincident with a radius of the rotor wheel assembly, where the remaining buckets have been previously inserted in a direction parallel to the axis of the turbine rotor wheel. The closure bucket has an integral shroud and is connected to a turbine rotor wheel assembly in which the remaining buckets have been previously inserted in an axial direction. The buckets adjacent the closure bucket are spread apart both tangentially and axially to provide sufficient clearance for the radial insertion of the integral closure bucket. To prevent axial movement of the closure bucket and adjacent buckets, twist locks are utilized in channels provided in the bottom of the female dovetails in the rotor wheel.
