  • Publication number: 20190218887
Abstract: A technique facilitates injection, e.g. water injection, via an injector well while providing automatic restriction of unwanted back flow. A completion may be positioned in a borehole to facilitate the injection operation. The completion comprises a packer coupled with a tubing and oriented to enable formation of a seal between the tubing and a surrounding casing. A flow isolation valve is coupled to the tubing for control of fluid flow along the tubing. Additionally, a mechanical assembly is coupled to the tubing at, for example, a location below the formation isolation valve. The mechanical assembly may comprise a tubing closure member, e.g. a mechanical formation isolation valve or a nipple and plug assembly, and a flow controller. The flow controller is automatically actuatable to enable a flow of injection fluid in a downhole direction while blocking fluid flow in an uphole direction while the tubing closure member is in a closed position.

  • Patent number: 10323468
Abstract: A technique combines a wireless coupler system with casing to communicate signals from and/or to a device external to the casing. The wireless coupler system may comprise an inductive coupler system formed with a female inductive coupler disposed along an exterior of the well casing and a male inductive coupler mounted along tubing disposed within the well casing. The female inductive coupler is operatively coupled with the sensor and the male inductive coupler is operatively coupled with a communication line routed along the tubing. The inductive coupler system is constructed to facilitate alignment of the male inductive coupler with the female inductive coupler as the tubing is moved along an interior of the well casing. Additionally, the inductive coupler system may be constructed with a bypass channel to facilitate the flow of fluid and routing of communication lines through the inductive coupler system.

  • Publication number: 20190162879
Abstract: A method of making a laser mirror in which a mirror substrate has at least a one micron size nodular defect includes depositing a planarization layer over the mirror substrate and the nodular defect, depositing a layer of silicon dioxide over the planarization layer, and etching away a portion of the layer of silicon dioxide. The method also includes thereafter, depositing a layer of hafnium dioxide over the layer of silicon dioxide and repeating the steps of depositing a layer of silicon dioxide, etching away a portion of the layer of silicon dioxide, and depositing a layer of hafnium dioxide until the nodular defect is reduced in size a predetermined amount.

  • Patent number: 10175391
Abstract: Planarization of defects in laser mirror and other optical component manufacture is disclosed. The planarization is performed by first depositing a relatively thick planarization layer, then carrying out a sequential deposition and etch process. The technique takes advantage of the non-uniform material removal rate as a function of etchant incident angle, and effectively buries the inclusion in a thick film with a near planar top surface. The process enables faster, more reliable manufacture of a non-defective high fluence multilayer mirror particularly suitable for high energy laser applications.

  • Patent number: 9810054
Abstract: A technique facilitates monitoring of load forces at various locations along a well string. The technique enables determination of loading based on measurement of hydraulic pressures, and the technique may be used to determine axial loading along a variety of downhole completions. A compensating piston may be disposed in a fluid chamber between a housing and a mandrel of one of the completions. The mandrel is slidably received in the housing and the fluid chamber is coupled with a sensor gauge via a pressure communication passage to facilitate accurate measurement of loading via the hydraulic pressures in the fluid chamber. The load forces may be monitored during, for example, landing of an uphole completion into a downhole completion. The sensor gauge also may be used for monitoring other pressures along the overall completion.

  • Patent number: 9797514
Abstract: A seal assembly made up of multiple opposite oriented unidirectional seals. The assembly includes a dedicated test port for each of the unidirectional seals. Thus, a first test port may be directed at the first seal such that if the first seal leaks, the second seal is configured to collapse and allow a second test port coupled thereto to detect the leak of the first seal. By the same token, the first test port may be used to detect any leak in the second seal which is detectable as the first seal collapses as a result of the leak. This unique type of architecture allows for a reliable manner of testing a multiple seal assembly that may be prone to leaks from multiple directions, for example from either a bore or an annular side of a tubular. This renders the bidirectionally testable seal configuration beneficial for incorporation into downhole completions hardware such at the location of a test gauge secured to a carrier device.

  • Patent number: 9739113
Abstract: A completions fluid loss control system for incorporation into upper completion hardware. The system allows for the avoidance of a dedicated intermediate completion installation in advance of upper completion delivery to a lower completion at a formation interface. The system includes a unique cup packer and flow regulation arrangement such that annular fluid thereabove may be isolated away from space below the system while at the same time allowing annular fluid therebelow to bypass the system. As such, the upper completion may be advanced toward the installed lower completion while maintaining well control at the noted formation interface.
