  • Patent number: 6804520
Abstract: In a mobile radio communications system, first radio resources are allocated to a first mobile radio communication. The term “radio resources” relates to one or more resources used to support a mobile radio communication and may include, for example, radio bandwidth, transmit power, signal and data processing hardware and software resources, radio transceiving resources, etc. A second group of radio resources is allocated to a second mobile radio communication. When a block of user information needs to be transmitted that requires an additional amount of radio resources, the first and second mobile radio communications are interrupted or their service levels are reduced for a brief time period. At least part of the block of information is transmitted during that time period using at least some of the first and second radio resources allocated for the first and second mobile radio communications.

  • Patent number: 6784815
Abstract: An A/D converter calibration apparatus of the “skip-and-fill” type includes a set of operating condition parameter sensors (100) for detecting the current operating conditions, which are represented by parameters x1, . . . , xN. The measured parameter are forwarded to an operating conditions change detector (102), which calculates a change measure and determines whether this measure exceeds or falls below a predetermined change threshold. A calibration control signal CTRL_SKIP_RT is passed to a calibration control unit (104), which sets the background calibration skip rate to a high value if the measure exceeds the threshold an to a low value if it does not exceed the threshold.

  • Publication number: 20040075599
Abstract: An A/D converter stage including an A/D sub-converter connected to a D/A sub-converter (12) is calibrated by a method that inserts a calibration test sequence into the D/A sub-converter. This is accomplished by forcing (SW) the comparators (COMP1-COMP7) of the A/D sub-converter to generate and insert the sequence into the D/A sub-converter.

  • Publication number: 20040073711
Abstract: The invention relates to header compression in packet-based communication systems. A mechanism that allows a compressor to reject a request for an undesirable mode change is proposed. The compressor indicates to the decompressor that the mode change request is being ignored, whereafter the decompressor may abort the initiated mode transition, with the understanding that the compressor has valid reasons to refuse it. The compressor preferably determines whether the rejection succeeded by link monitoring, and in case of a successful rejection, the compressor remains in its current mode. A preferred embodiment performs explicit rejection signaling through a mode change rejection message with a redefined mode value. The rejection signaling of the invention makes it possible for a compressor to disable the transition to a particular mode and enables implementations with only a subset of all modes.

  • Patent number: 6700888
Abstract: In packet communication paths that include header compression, header fields of packets to be communicated are altered. The alteration of the header fields does not disturb their functionality, and is transparent to the header compression scheme of the packet communication path. The altered header fields are provided for compression by the header compression scheme, resulting in improved performance of the header compression scheme. Performance improvements can also be achieved in packet communication paths that do not use header compression, by violating the integrity of header fields in packets to be transmitted over the packet communication path.

  • Patent number: 6680921
Abstract: Techniques are provided for efficiently compressing and reconstructing the time stamp value of a real time communications packet whose time stamp value does not fall within a normally expected sequence of time stamp values. A first part of the time stamp value is selected by the header compressor and transmitted. A second part of the time stamp value is estimated by the header decompressor based on elapsed time between receipt of consecutive packets. The header decompressor combines the second part with the first part received from the header compressor to produce a reconstructed time stamp value.

  • Patent number: 6609224
Abstract: A method and apparatus for replacing a transport layer header error detection code and a header compression algorithm error detection code with a one error detection code. The replacement error detection code covers both the transport layer header and the transport layer payload. Such an arrangement reduces the amount of as-is or uncompressed information transmitted, thereby reducing the required bandwidth. The replacement error detection code is subsequently used to verify the correctness of both the reconstructed header and the payload.

  • Publication number: 20030009663
Abstract: In a system for transmitting packets over a link between a compressor and a decompressor, a method is provided for implicit packet type identification. A set of implicit packet transmission characteristics including at least first and second characteristics is selected, and the compressor is operated to assign the first and second transmission characteristics to packets of first and second packet types, respectively. The decompressor is operated to detect transmission characteristics of packets received by the decompressor, and to thereby identify a received packet as being either a first or second packet type. Usefully, header free packets comprise one of the packet types.

  • Patent number: 6496125
Abstract: An A/D converter system includes a first A/D converter with calibration circuitry. Also included in the system is an auxiliary A/D converter having a lower performance level than the first A/D converter. Circuitry is provided for temporarily switching an A/D conversion from the first A/D converter to the auxiliary A/D converter during short time intervals used for calibration of the first A/D converter. The rate at which the A/D conversion is switched is lower than the sampling rate of the first A/D converter.

  • Patent number: 6487420
Abstract: A transmit power value (PRACH) for a connection request message (RACH) from a mobile user equipment unit (20) to a telecommunications network (18) is determined using a target ratio of received energy to interference value [(Eb/I0)RACH—target] and a modification factor [(Eb/I0)MEAN—DELTA]. The modification factor is a sliding mean differential between the target ratio and an actual ratio [(Eb/I0)ACTUAL] of received energy to interference as determined by the telecommunications network. The modification factor allows for the calculation of the transmit power for the connection request message to be adaptive with respect to a changing characteristic of the mobile user equipment unit (e.g., aging of the mobile user equipment unit). In one embodiment, the transmit power value determination is made at the mobile user equipment unit.

  • Patent number: 6486807
Abstract: A pipeline stage in a multi-bit/stage pipeline A/D converter is calibrated by switching a set of D/A converter unit-segments in the stage to predetermined states to produce a first digital signal. A second digital signal is produced by switching a predetermined unit-segment in the set to its complementary state and keeping the states of the other unit-segments in the set unchanged. The unit-segment is then associated with a calibration coefficient representing the deviation of the difference between the first and second digital signals from an expected difference between the first and second digital signals. This process is repeated for each unit-segment that is to be calibrated.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for Internet Protocol (IP) based communication systems without using a complete Internet Protocol stack on both sides of a communication link. Various exemplary embodiments include communication of audio information over a wireless transmission channel to a wireless terminal from a network that includes transmission of audio information using voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). A first communication system and method may include a wireless terminal having a dedicated audio application that includes processing for header compression and decompression. A second communication system and method may include a wireless terminal and a network device (e.g., a network transmitter/receiver terminal), each containing at least a portion of an Internet Protocol stack, and the network device may include a header modification means that may reduce or eliminate the header from VoIP packets it will send to the wireless terminal.
