The propiolonitrile derivatives of the first component are those wherein each ring is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 2,6-dioxan-1,4-diyl or 2,6-pyrimidine-1,4-diyl, each bridge between the rings is ethylene, carbonyloxy or covalent bond and the terminal group at one end is hydrocarbon group of up to 10 carbons which may contain at least one ether bond in the chain.
