  • Patent number: 5074243
Abstract: A method and device for coating a web (2) of material, especially a web of paper or cardboard, traveling over a backing roll (1) wherein coating is applied to the web is excess and reduced by a flow-control component (3), especially a doctor, to the desired thickness and wherein the flow-control component is secured to a beam (5) that extends over the operating width. The coating-thickness deviation from a straight line is determined over the operating width and employed as a parameter for controlling the heat emitted by a heater (16), especially heating strips, positioned on the side of the doctor beam facing away from the backing roller.

  • Patent number: 4920913
Abstract: In a device for coating a web of material that travels around a backing roller, the device having a coating chamber that opens toward the backing roller, that extends over the operating width, that has a slot demarcated at the web-intake end by an overflow plate for supplying liquid coating, and having a flow-control system at the downstream end, the improvement which comprises structures defining a coating-guide channelthat extends over the operating width at the outlet end of the coating chamber and terminates just upstream of the flow-control system, that is demarcated at one end by the backing roller and at the other by a baffle that essentially parallels the surface of the backing roller, that extends along the direction of travel at least 50% of the length of the overflow plate plus the flow-control system, that is open along its width perpendicular to the axis of the backing roller from 1.5 to 15% and preferably from 2.5 to 5% of its length, andthat terminates just upstream of the flow-control system.

  • Patent number: 4846417
Abstract: To lift the leading end of a paper web upwardly into contact with the underside of a perforated support roll which draws the web by suction thereagainst, a bar, rod or wire forming an entrainer is lifted by a pair of strands controlled by a windlass to engage the entrainer in a crease at the leading end of the web, the entrainer passing over a pressing roller which can be displaced toward the support roller and is retractable therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4824039
Abstract: A device for lifting the leading end of a paper web to the underside of a support drum on which rolls can be formed from the paper web comprises a lifting device which has a suction box pivotal thereon about an axis parallel to the drum axis, so that as the suction box passes between the blades of a longitudinal slitter, it can assume a generally vertical orientation. The suction surface is elastically deformable against the underside of the drum.

  • Patent number: 4638657
Abstract: A device for measuring the winding hardness of a strip, especially a strip of paper, that has been wound into a reel. The device consists of a mechanism for extracting a slip that has been inserted tight between two coils of the reel of paper with one end extending out of the side of the reel and of a dynamometer that measures the force necessary to extract the slip over a certain distance. To allow winding hardness to be displayed directly rather than in the form of a graph, the slip-extracting mechanism operates at a constant extracting speed, a pulse generator that is supplied with the resulting force, or with a control signal derived from it, by the dynamometer supplies counting pulses to an up-down counter at a frequency that is proportional to the force, and the slip-extracting mechanism is connected to an odometer that, when it detects equal distances, switches the counter from up to down and stops it.

  • Patent number: 4406930
Abstract: A section insulator for trolley wires of electric railways is disclosed. The ends of two trolley wires are fastened to two insulating sliding strips between which arcing horns are arranged. The insulating sliding strips comprise a fiber-reinforced plastic wherein the filament fibers of the fiber reinforcement are stacked parallel to each other and are arranged perpendicularly to the sliding surface. The arcing horns are approximately U-shaped with the legs of the U-shape forming a leading runner and an adjusting loop bridged by an approximately V-shaped cross-piece. The arcing horns are disposed with the arc guiding parts facing each other and lying above the two insulating sliding strips in their operating position. Depressions are provided in the sliding surface of the insulating sliding strips to reduce accumulation of deposits.

  • Patent number: 4135155
Abstract: A plurality of sensors are located on one of the bodies, staggered by fixed distances from each other along the direction of relative movement. The sensors are responsive to a characteristic of the other body, for example to surface characteristics of a roadway. A sensed signal, picked up by a first, or leading sensor is time delayed for a predetermined time interval, and compared with signals received from all the other sensors. Upon optimum correlation, and with known time delay and distance between sensors, the relative speed can then be indicated by determining which one of the sensors picked up the signals which matched the time delay signal. The amplitudes of the signals can be dynamically equalized and the time delay itself changed to permit output over wide ranges, or with respect to different scaling units.
