Patent number: 10966522Abstract: An apparatus includes a coupling rod having a longitudinal axis and disposed within one or more bearing elements that laterally constrain the coupling rod while enabling axial rotation, multiple latching barbs coupled to the coupling rod, rotational force elements that apply a rotational force to the latching barbs in a latching direction and resist rotation of the latching barbs in an unlatching direction. The apparatus may be deployed in a rack system having a rack drawer. The apparatus may also include barb engagement elements for engaging and latching the latching barbs when the rack drawer is moved from an open position to a closed position. Rotation of the coupling rod in the unlatching direction unlatches the latching barbs when the rack drawer is in the closed position and enables a user to open the rack drawer. A method that uses the apparatus is also disclosed herein.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2019Date of Patent: April 6, 2021Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Camillo Sassano, William Risk, Benjamin Gordon Shaw, Kevin L. Publication number: 20170031182Abstract: Most electric light sources flicker, that is, the intensity of the light that is produced varies substantially in a periodically repeating pattern. In sensitive individuals, light flicker can cause headaches and other undesirable symptoms. This invention comprises a light sensor that measures light intensity, signal processing that identifies the flicker component of the light, and electrically controlled lenses of glasses (spectacles) that rapidly darken or become more transparent so as to cancel most of the flicker. This reduces the flicker seen by the wearer of the glasses, reducing discomfort.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2016Publication date: February 2, 2017Inventor: Gordon Shaw Novak

Publication number: 20160373866Abstract: Most electric light sources flicker, that is, the intensity of the light that is produced varies substantially in a periodically repeating pattern. In sensitive individuals, light flicker can cause headaches and other undesirable symptoms. However, humans cannot directly perceive that common light sources are flickering. This invention comprises a light sensor that measures light intensity, a means of signal processing that identifies and isolates the flicker component of the light, and an audio amplifier that amplifies the flicker component so that it can be converted to sound by a speaker or headphones. This makes it easy for ordinary people to identify and characterize flickering sources of light because they can directly perceive the flicker as sound.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2016Publication date: December 22, 2016Inventor: Gordon Shaw Novak

Patent number: 9487620Abstract: Methods of on-line control of molecular weight in continuous solid state polymerization processes. The solid state polymerization process can be a polyester process or to a polyamide process, and more specifically a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) or a poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) or a nylon 6,6 continuous solid-state polymerization (SSP) process. An in-line viscometer melts and measures the molecular weight of the SSP resin and adjusts one or more of the process variables, i.e. reactor time, inert gas purity and inert gas temperature to maintain a constant resin molecular weight.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2013Date of Patent: November 8, 2016Assignee: Invista North America S.a.r.l.Inventors: Gordon Shaw, Miguel Angel Osornio
