    Abstract: The latex of an emulsion aggregation toner may be prepared without the use of a surfactant. Such a process comprises preparing an emulsion of monomers in water without a surfactant; adding a free radical initiator to at least a portion of the emulsion to initiate seed polymerization to form seed polymer, wherein the free radical initiator attaches to the seed polymer to form ionic, hydrophilic end groups on the seed polymer; and adding additional monomer to the composition to complete polymerization to form a latex polymer.
