    Abstract: The present invention relates to a transparent, low-flammability, UV-resistant, oriented film made from a crystallizable thermoplastic and having a thickness of from 5 to 300 &mgr;m. The film comprises at least one UV stabilizer and at least one flame retardant, and at least the flame retardant, and preferably also the UV stabilizer, is fed directly as a masterbatch to the crystallizable thermoplastic during production of the film. The film may have one or more layers, and the UV stabilizer may have been selected from the group consisting of the 2-hydroxybenzophenones, the 2-hydroxybenzotriazoles, the organonickel compounds, the salicylic esters, the cinnamic ester derivatives, the resorcinol monobenzoates, the oxanilides, the hydroxybenzoic esters, the sterically hindered amines and triazines, and the flame retardant may be an organic phosphorus compound, in particular an organic phosphorus compound soluble in polyethylene terephthalate.

    Abstract: The application discloses a transparent, biaxially oriented polyester film having a base layer at least 80% by weight of which is composed of a thermoplastic polyester, and having at least one outer layer, wherein the outer layer is composed of a copolymer or of a mixture of polymers which comprises at least 35 mol % of ethylene 2,6-naphthalate units, up to 44 mol % of ethylene terephthalate units, and from 1 to 20 mol % of ethylene isophthalate units, and also up to 20 mol % of a sulfo-substituted dicarboxylic acid and, if desired, up to 10 mol % of units from aliphatic, including cycloaliphatic, or aromatic diols and/or dicarboxylic acids (based in each case on the total content of dicarboxylic acid or diol).

    Abstract: The application discloses a transparent biaxially oriented polyester film having a base layer, at least 80% by weight of which is composed of a thermoplastic polyester, and having at least one outer layer, wherein the outer layer is composed of a polymer or a mixture of polymers which comprises at least 40% by weight of ethylene 2,6-naphthalate units and up to 60% by weight of ethylene terephthalate units and/or of units from aliphatic, including cycloaliphatic, or aromatic diols and/or dicarboxylic acids, with the proviso that the T.sub.g 2 value of the polyester film is above the T.sub.g 2 value of the base layer but below the T.sub.g 2 value of the outer layer, and the base layer comprises particles. The film has low oxygen transmission. It is particularly suitable for packaging applications, specifically for packaging foods and other consumable items, or as a can liner, a lid film or a thermo-transfer ribbon.

    Abstract: A shrink film which is comprised of a plurality of polyolefinic layers is disclosed. The base layer comprises polypropylene and a hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin admixture, and the top layers on each side of the base layer comprise polyolefinic sealable raw materials. The film possesses a shrinkability of more than 15% in the transverse direction and of less than 6% in the longitudinal direction, both measured at 90.degree. C. Also disclosed is a process for manufacturing the film comprising coextrusion followed by stretching of the film in the longitudinal and transverse directions, whereby stretching in the longitudinal direction is performed such that the double refraction value .DELTA.n of the longitudinally oriented film is not greater than 15.times.10.sup.-3.

    Abstract: A device for smoothing out the thickness of a sheet of thermoplastic material which includes a sheet die and a heating device which is integrated with the upper die lip of the sheet die. The heating device includes a hollow box filled with a liquid and a bar which projects laterally beyond the endfaces of the hollow box. The inlet and outlet openings of the bar in the hollow box are sealed. Arranged on the underside of the bar are small hot plates which are electrically heated. The liquid in the hollow box serves as a heat transfer medium and typically is an oil having a boiling point higher than 280.degree. C.

    Abstract: A biaxially stretch-oriented film, suitable for the process of transfer metallizing, which comprises a base layer coextruded with covering layers on either side thereof and comprising an inert admixture is disclosed. The base layer contains the inert admixture in the form of finely divided particles, which partially protrude from the base layer and are completely enveloped by the covering layers. At least one of the two outer surfaces of the covering layers displays, at least in partial areas, an increased roughness attributable to the particles protruding from the base layer.

    Abstract: A process for producing a metallizable, sealable, biaxially stretch-oriented multi-ply film includes the steps of: providing melts of a predominantly polypropylene base layer, and first and second polyolefinic facing layers; co-extruding the melts through a flat film die, wherein the first and second polyolefinic facing layers are co-extruded on either side of the base layer; solidifying the co-extruded film by cooling; longitudinally stretching the co-extruded film at a temperature from about 120.degree. to 130.degree. C. in a ratio of from about 5 to 7:1; transversely stretching the co-extruded film at a temperature from about 160.degree. to 170.degree. C. in a ratio of from about 8 to 10:1; and corona-treating one facing layer of the co-extruded film which is metallizable. Each of the melts contains a calcium carbonate neutralizing agent having an absolute particle size of less than about 10 .mu.m, a mean particle size of less than about 0.1 .mu.m, a specific surface area of more than about 40 m.sup.

The raw material of the film has an idealized thermo-oxidation temperature in the range from 260.degree. to 300.degree. C., preferably 260.degree. to 280.degree. C. The content of organic neutralizing agents, in particular calcium stearate, in the raw material is less than/equal to 100 ppm.

The core layer contains a mixture of1) about 45 to 90% by weight of a thermoplastic polymer comprising propylene,2) about 5 to 25% by weight of an inert, particulate filler, and3) about 5 to 30% by weight of a hydrocarbon resin being compatible with the thermoplastic polymer and having a softening point in the range from about 100.degree. to 160.degree.     Abstract: An opaque polyolefin film having a base layer composed essentially of propylene polymers and having sealing layers present on both sides, composed essentially of sealable olefin polymers, is disclosed. From about 0.2% to 1.5% by weight, relative to the layer of polydialkylsiloxane is incorporated in one of the two sealing layers, and this layer has not been subjected to corona treatment. The other sealing layer has been subjected to corona treatment and has polydialkylsiloxane, not incorporated, but present on the outer surface of this layer, the polydialkylsiloxane having been transferred to this layer by contact between the sealing layer in which polydialkylsiloxane is incorporated. The relative polydialkylsiloxane occupancy of this layer, which is determined by means of ESCA spectroscopy, is not more than 15. The three-layer opaque polyolefin film is prepared by the coextrusion process. It is particularly suitable for use as a packaging film on high-speed packaging machines.

    Abstract: A coextruded, biaxailly oriented multilayer film comprises a base layer comprising an extremely pure raw material and outer layer. It is suitable for use as an electrically insulating film, as a dielectric in an electrical capacitor, and has improved dielectrical properties for this purpose. The base layer and the outer layer or layers contain propylene polymer on one or both sides and stabilizers for propylene polymers. The raw material for the base layer has an idealized thermal oxidation temperature in the range of 260.degree. to 300.degree. C., preferably in the range 260.degree. to 280.degree. C., and the raw material for the outer layer or layers has an idealized thermal oxidation temperature in the region of 240.degree. to 300.degree. C., preferably in the range 240.degree. to 270.degree. C. The multilayer film as a whole has an idealized thermal oxidation temperature in the range 250.degree. to 290.degree. C., in paticular in the range 250.degree. to 275.degree. C.

    Abstract: A metallizable, sealable, biaxially stretch-oriented multi-ply film comprises a base layer essentially of polypropylene, a first polyolefinic facing layer and a second polyolefinic facing layer. All of the layers contain a neutralizing agent and a stabilizer against thermal degradation. The neutralizing agent is a calcium carbonate having an absolute particle size of less than 10.0 .mu.m, a mean particle size of less than 0.1 .mu.m, a specific surface area of more than 40 m.sup.2 /g and a whiteness of more than 90% and, the stabilizer comprises a phenolic stabilizer having a molecular weight of more than 1,000 g/mol. One polyolefinic facing layer contains an anti-blocking agent. In addition, a process for producing the metallizable multi-ply film is described, and its use as a packaging material is indicated.

    Abstract: A tubular, biaxially stretch-oriented packaging film, in particular a sausage casing, comprising a polymer mixture which comprises an aliphatic polyamide, a polyterephthalic acid ester, an aromatic polyamide comprising branched aliphatic diamines having at least 7 carbon atoms and aromatic dicarboxylic acids, or aromatic diamines and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids having 5 to 11 carbon atoms and a dye. The weight amount of the aromatic polyamide is preferably equal to, and particularly preferably greater than, the weight amount of dye. A masterbatch suitable for producing the film is also disclosed. With particular advantage, the film having the above described composition can be dyed deep black or brilliant red.
