    Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention include a method and system for operating a dual mode terminal that includes a wireless local area network interface and a cellular radio interface. According to an embodiment, the dual mode terminal camps on the cellular radio interface when idle. When a Page Request message is received over the cellular radio interface, the terminal determines whether wireless local area network coverage is possible from an access point providing wireless local area network cellular communication. If so, the terminal processes the incoming communication request over the wireless local area network towards another party, wherein then the communication is ended, the terminal goes back to camp on the cellular channel.

    Abstract: An intermediate node in a wireless communication system transmits application layer messages between first and second nodes. To do so, the intermediate node receives a request to activate a packet data protocol (PDP) context for the first node. The request, as generated by the first node, indicates the first node is capable of using a first protocol stack that excludes one or more particular layers included in a second protocol stack used by the second node. The intermediate node activates a PDP context for the first node in accordance with the request. The intermediate node thereafter forwards application layer messages supported by the activated PDP context between the first node and the second node, forwarding application layer messages destined for the first node in accordance with the first protocol stack and forwarding application layer messages destined for the second node in accordance with the second protocol stack.

    Abstract: The application relates to charging of traffic from terminals and in particular of charging of traffic from GPRS mobile terminals which are roaming in a visited PLMN (not claimed). According to the applicant's acknowledged prior art, either the traffic passes the home PLMN or the Home Operator relies on the Visited Operator to generate the CDRs to be used by the Home Operator for billing. Whereas the first solution leads to tromboning and inefficient traffic routing, the second solution calls for a strong trust relationship between the Home and the Visited Operators. The present invention circumvents both problems in that the terminal generates a traffic counting information and sends it to the Visited Network. The Visited Network generates a traffic counting record comprising the traffic counting information from the terminal and traffic counting information from the Visited Network. The traffic counting record is subsequently sent to the Home Network.
