  • Patent number: 6156527
Abstract: A method for characterizing polypeptides, which comprises: (a) treating a sample comprising a population of one or more polypeptides with a cleavage agent which is known to recognize a specific amino acid residue or sequence in polypeptide chains and to cleave at a cleavage site, whereby the population is cleaved to generate peptide fragments; (b) isolating a population of the peptide fragments which bear at one end a reference terminus comprising either only a C-terminus or only an N-terminus and which bear at the other end the cleavage site proximal to the reference terminus; and c) determining a signature sequence of at least some of the isolated fragments, which signature sequence is the sequence of a predetermined number of amino acid residues running from the cleavage site; wherein the signature sequence and the relative position of the cleavage site to the reference terminus characterize the polypeptide or each polypeptide.

  • Patent number: 5951798
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the continuous production of a multi-layer web comprising an exterior covering and a nonwoven material disposed underneath. According to the present invention, a nonwoven material which has been prebonded is used as the starting product, and the steps of additional bonding, calibrating, and smoothing of the nonwoven material and of laminating the nonwoven material and the exterior covering are combined in a single process. The present invention, in addition to achieving a cost advantage, also produces a covering material that provides better sitting conditions, equivalent to the foam backed covering materials with respect to physical textile values yet being easier to recycle and. In addition, recycled textile products can be worked into the covering material of the present invention as reprocessed fibers without losing any advantage.

  • Patent number: 5269814
Abstract: Between a chrome tanning step and a fat liquor treatment step, a flesh side split leather is subjected to shaving on both its split and flesh sides to a thickness of 1.1 to 2.5 mm, preferably 1.2 to 1.5 mm and is then aftertanned. After a split side dressing of the dried butt, a further shaving operation is effected on the flesh side to a thickness of 0.5 to 1.0 mm, preferably 0.7 to 0.9 mm, whereupon the flesh side is also dressed. The result is a split leather which is particularly effective for use on automotive vehicle dashboards and has low shrinkage even when subjected to high temperature and moisture fluctuations.

  • Patent number: 5002648
Abstract: An inorganic thin film is deposited on a substrate by sputtering a sputter target by cathode sputtering in the vicinity of the substrate. To produce the target, at least two pulverulent starting components are mixed. The mixture is tempered if a uniform reaction product can be obtained in this process. It is powdered and the powder is deposited on a metallic base by plasma-jet spraying. This produces the target. Preferably, an oxide mixture is tempered which is a starting product for a superconducting ceramic material. In order to convert the thin film deposited to a superconducting state, it is treated for a prolonged time at temperatures of 300.degree.-800.degree. C. in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. The reaction product obtained on tempering may have, for example, the overall composition ZBa.sub.m Cu.sub.n O.sub.x, where 1.5.ltoreq.m.ltoreq.2.5, 2.ltoreq.n.ltoreq.5 and 4.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.

  • Patent number: 4857461
Abstract: The present invention relates to a continuous process for the enzymatic preparation of isomaltulose. A periplasmatic sucrose-mutase is produced by fermentation of microorganisms which form sucrose-mutase. The cell-free crude enzyme extract is prepared by digestion of the cells and by cross-flow microfiltration. In a single-stage, simultaneous purification and immobilization of the sucrose-mutase from the cell-free crude extract conditioned by diafiltration is obtained by selective bonding to an anionizable carrier matrix. Direct conversion of sucrose into isomaltulose is produced by the sucrose-mutase bonded to the anionizable carrier matrix, preferably in cartridge or cartouche form.

  • Patent number: 4774178
Abstract: Biological material such as microorganisms is immobilized by polymerizing in the presence of the biological material a readily soluble polyetherpolyol having some hydroxyl groups esterified with acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and remaining hydroxyl groups reacted with an isocyanate group-containing derivative of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or a polyfunctional isocyanate. Preferably, the isocyanate derivative of an unsaturated carboxylic acid is isocyanatoethyl acrylate, isocyanatoethyl methacrylate of 4-isocyanato-3-methyl-2-butyl-acrylate and the polyfunctional isocyanate is a diisocyanate or polyisocyanate. Beads can be produced by forming droplets in a water-immiscible medium and polymerizing. Polymerization can be carried out under inert gas in the presence of radical initiators or by irradiation with actinic light.
