  • Patent number: 4642363
Abstract: A method for the continuous or batch preparation of trialkyl organo-oxysilanes by reaction of organic hydroxy compounds with trialkyl halogen silanes in the absence of acid-binding substances is disclosed. The organic hydroxy compound is added directly to the trialkoxy halogen silane in an amount which corresponds to no more than the stoichiometrically necessary amount. The trialkyl halogen silane, or the resultant mixture is always at the boiling temperature or above the boiling temperature in the gaseous state. The reaction mixture is subjected, no later than toward the end of the reaction, to a column distillation in which the column temperature is held such that the reaction is carried to the end within the column. In continuous operation, the trialkyl halogen silane is introduced in gaseous form into the bottom of a column and either kept under reflux or introduced into a reactor into which corresponding stoichiometric amounts of organic hydroxy compound are simultaneously introduced.

  • Patent number: 4595531
Abstract: Benzodiazocines corresponding to the formula ##STR1## are converted to benzodiazepines corresponding to the formula ##STR2## of claim 1 by subjecting the benzodiazocine (a) if it is halogen-substituted in the 3-position to a thermal treatment which may also take place in the presence of a nucleophilic agent for the reaction or (b) if the 3-position is hydroxy substituted to treatment with a Lewis acid which is a chlorinating or brominating agent. Whenever the diazepine obtained as the final product has a 2-halogenomethyl group it may then be converted to benzodiazepine which is otherwise substituted in the 2-position.

  • Patent number: 4570552
Abstract: A process and apparatus for delivering carbon i.e., coal dust, to be combusted in a furnace is presented. The furnace is of the type having plural combustion points and may include a shaft furnace such as, for example, a blast or cupola furnace. The carbon dust is delivered in dosed quantities to each of the individual combustion points in a separate air stream which is under a predetermined pressure. The carbon (coal dust)/carrier gas (air) is delivered to each combustion point in the furnace at super critical speed, i.e., the speed of sound, the carrier gas having a relatively high proportion of solid material therein. The actual quantity of carbon material delivered to each combustion point is directly detected and monitored as a consequence of volumetric measurement and is appropriately corrected by means of a secondary air supply when the carbon quantity either exceeds or falls below a predetermined nominal value.

  • Patent number: 4521729
Abstract: For measuring the deformation capacity of erythrocytes use is made of a sample vessel that is walled off into two spaces by a piece of foil with a pore therein. One such space is filled with buffer solution with erythrocytes and the other is filled with buffer solution without erythrocytes. A pressure head is produced acting across the foil for causing transit or passage of the erythrocytes through the opening, whose diameter is less than the major quiescent diameter of an erythrocyte so that information on the deformation capacity may be produced by measuring the transit time. This is done by electrodes placed on the two sides of the opening so that changes in the resistance to alternating current by an erythrocyte in transit may be sensed and the transit time taken. After about 200 transits the readings are processed in a processing unit.

  • Patent number: 4519861
Abstract: A process for manufacturing a fiber-reinforced push or pull rod formed of electrically insulating plastic material having flange fittings fastened to respective ends thereof. The push or pull rod is formed preferably as a hollow cylinder, and the flange fittings are adapted for transmitting compression or tension forces. A plurality of threads are arranged in parallel with each other and an axis of the rod; which threads are then impregnated with a hardenable plastic material. In accordance with the invention, the tensile strength of the rod is improved by wrapping the threads about at least one pair of wires which are arranged substantially parallel and at a distance with respect to each other so as to form a tape wherein the wires form the edges of the tape. The wires, as tape edges, are inserted into helical external recesses of the flange fittings and are secured therein in a form-locking manner.

  • Patent number: 4401153
Abstract: In a heat exchanger for heat transfer between ammonia converter effluent recycle gases and water, a plurality of U-shaped tubes have their inlet and outlet ends connected to a tubesheet which divides the interior of a shell into a pressure chamber and a heat exchange chamber containing the tubes. The pressure chamber is divided into an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber with the cooled recycle gases flowing into the outlet chamber and cooling the inlet chamber. The tubes are formed of ferritic steel and are welded to the tubesheet. A tubular cladding of nitriding-resistant material extends through the tubesheet at the inlets to the tubes and spaces the recycle gases from the tubes at the inlet ends.
