  • Patent number: 5047281
Abstract: A fiber composite material has individual reinforcing fibers embedded in a bonding matrix material. The bonding of the fibers to the embedding matrix material is controlled along the length of the fibers by axially spaced fiber surface bonding zones having a high bonding ability and alternating with further fiber surface low bonding or non-bonding zones having a low or no bonding ability relative to the matrix material. The bonding zones having a high or maximal bonding ability are distributed optimally as to size, location and spacing along the length of a fiber so that loads or forces including the breaking load are transmitted from one bonding zone to the next bonding zone which are preferably formed as ring zones. The low-bonding or non-bonding zones are so dimensioned that bonding zones of fibers located adjacent to one another do not overlap in a direction across the length of the fibers.

  • Patent number: 4966527
Abstract: A composite propeller blade construction has fiber strands extending predominantly in a radial direction and looping around mounting hardware connecting a blade root to a rotor hub. The mounting hardware includes at least one bolt secured to the rotor hub or a shackle member secured to the hub by a mounting bolt and holding a tying bolt so that fiber strand loops forming the blade body loop around the shackle member and around free ends of the tying bolt. The radially extending fiber strands take up centrifugal forces and are enclosed by a jacket, the radially inner end of which is formed as mounting flanges screwed to a respective rim of the hub. The arrangement of the fiber loops is especially suitable for a fiber composite lightweight construction wherein the fibers form redundant load take-up paths and provide an advantageous centrifugal force and moment introduction into the structure.

  • Patent number: 4730876
Abstract: An apparatus for manufacturing a brush-type seal comprising wrapping a filament over two spaced elongated mandrels in parallel arrangement to form a filament packing, then securing the filament packing at its ends onto the two mandrels, thereafter dividing the filament packing in a median plane between the mandrels to produce two brushes which are then bent into the desired brush shape. The bristles can be formed at an inclination in their mountings by supporting the mandrels on the base beams of a parallelogram linkage which can be displaced and controlled by cam disks so that the length of winding of the filament remains constant.

  • Patent number: 4617072
Abstract: An intermediate member is formed as a semifinished product and includes at least two films or sheets of carbon containing material. Both sheets, such as prepegs, are initially in a still deformable state. One film or sheet is plane, the other is profiled and then the two are bonded to each other, brought into the desired final form and cured. The final form is then heated while air is excluded for coking the carbon so that only a carbon skeleton remains. Such skeleton may be further reinforced by again impregnating the skeleton with a carbon containing resin and again coking. The carbonized or coked final form is enriched by metallic silicon, whereby the silicon precipitates by decomposition. Simultaneously with the enriching step or thereafter the final form is heat treated again to cause the formation of silicon carbide by the reaction C+SI.fwdarw.SiC.

  • Patent number: 4575327
Abstract: A mold comprising a core which is open at one end and has the negative contour of the workpiece and a sheet-metal outer container surrounding the core. High dimensional stability of the core, easy removability of the workpiece from the mold and a smoother surface of the workpiece are obtained by isostatic pressing of titanium powder in the spaces in the mold. The core consists, at least at its negative contour surface for the workpiece, of a high-temperature alloy, particularly one having a base of nickel or iron. This and the titanium powder material of the workpiece are neutral in chemical reaction and low in or free of diffusion with respect to each other upon the hot isostatic pressing. The core is in the form of a ring of segments surrounded by a solid holding ring.
