  • Publication number: 20020177934
Abstract: A vehicle collision damage reduction system is provided. The system works by detecting the relative speed between the vehicle and an object, such as another vehicle. A danger level is calculated based on parameters such as speed and distance to the object; the danger level could be at an “emergency level” or at some lower level. Based on the danger level, different corrective measures and the degree of the corrective measures can be adjusted to attempt to minimize occupant injury. For example, the airbag can be adjusted to better protect the occupant, a pre-tensioner can be activated at a certain level, and the inclination of a child restraint seat may be adjusted as well.

  • Publication number: 20020129986
Abstract: To provide an occupant sensor that can reliably judge whether the object loaded on a seat is a child restraint system or an adult even when the child restraint system is fixed by using a seatbelt. The occupant sensor detects whether or not the seatbelt extraction amount sensor (switch) is ON. When the extraction amount sensor is ON, the object loaded on the seat is judged as being a child restraint system or a child. When the seatbelt extraction amount sensor is not ON, the sensor determines whether or not the value of load detected by the seat load sensor is not less than 30 kg. When the load is less than 30 kg, the occupant is judged as being an adult. When the load is less than 30 kg, the occupant is judged as being a child or a child restraint system.

  • Publication number: 20020125051
Abstract: A seat load measuring apparatus that can provide an accurate load output even when one or more sensors are exerted with a load in excess of its measurable load is provided. In a first instance, the output of each load sensor is read at Step S11. Subsequently, at step S12, whether or not there is any sensor whereof the output is in excess of the predetermined value is determined. If no output of these sensors is in excess of the predetermined value, it is regarded as normal, and the seat weight is obtained by summation of the outputs of the sensors at Step S13. When the output of any sensor exceeds the predetermined value, it is determined that an offset load is exerted thereon and thus the output of the sensor in question cannot be trusted. Therefore, the seat weight obtained immediately before the output of any of the sensors exceeds the predetermined value is regarded as the seat weight.

  • Patent number: 6441661
Abstract: An A/D converter (30) samples an analog signal synchronously with a sampling clock from a VCO (70). These sampled values are stored in a shift register (410). A code judging section (420) detects the positive/negative sign pattern (time-series code pattern) of the sampled values held in storage elements (S0 to S5) of the shift register (410) and stores the sampled values in predetermined register (431 to 434) according to the detected sign pattern. According to this, a calculating section (430) determines the phase difference between the analog signal and the sampling clock. The phase difference is fed to a VCO (70) through a D/A converter (50) and a loop filter (60).

  • Patent number: 6382667
Abstract: To detect the presence of the child seat being fixed on the seat, and to prohibit deployment of the air bag even in the case of collision. A seat sensor for detecting the value of the load applied on the seat, and a tension switch that detects tension applied on the seat belt and turns into the ON-state when the tension is in a certain range are provided. The air bag actuation deciding section determines whether it is in the state that the tension is below the lower threshold value and the tension switch is in the ON-state and the seat belt is attached to the buckle, or in the state that the tension switch is in the OFF-state and the sum of the seat weight obtained from the seat sensor and the increase of the weight due to the tension of the seat belt is not more than a prescribed weight. When the collision sensor detects a collision, a regulating control signal for the deployment of the air bag corresponding to the determination is supplied to the ignition unit.

  • Patent number: 6366200
Abstract: To provide a method of determining the presence and the kind of the object on the seat of the passenger vehicle accurately. When the seat weight w is below w1, it is determined that the seat vacant. When the seat weight is equal to or above w1, determination is made whether or not the output p of the living body proximity sensor is below the threshold value p1. In the case where the output p of the living body proximity sensor is below the threshold value p1, it is determined that a child is sitting on the seat when the seat weight is below w2, and that an adult is sitting on the seat when the seat weight is equal to or above w2. When the output of the living body proximity sensor is equal to or above threshold value p1, it is determined that a child seat is mounted on the seat.

  • Publication number: 20020033283
Abstract: A load sensor is assembled by screwing a nut on a bolt, sequentially fitting a washer and a tube spacer on the bolt, fitting a bore of a strain-generating member on the tube spacer, fitting another washer on the bolt, tightening another nut, and clamping a bobbin-shaped unit composed of the washers and the tube spacer between the nuts in the axial direction of the bolt. Since the strain-generating member having a thickness less than the height of a strain-generating member holding space formed between the washers is placed in the space with some clearance, even when the washers are fixed to the bolt by a strong pressing force, the pressing force will not directly act on the strain-generating member.

  • Publication number: 20020027345
Abstract: A method of suitably controlling an airbag device or a pretensioner without imposing a burden on an airbag deployment control system and without complicating the wiring and logic for information interchange. A load discriminator receives an output from seat load cells and binarizes the output of the seat load cells, i.e. the weight of an occupant, with reference to two different threshold values corresponding to ON and OFF of the buckle switch, thereby obtaining two results. The weight discriminator sends the respective results to an airbag controller. The airbag controller receives the results and an ON/OFF signal from the buckle switch, employs the result according to the threshold value corresponding to the actual ON/OFF state of the buckle switch, and judges the kind (adult or child) of the occupant based on the employed result. Then, the airbag controller judges the actuation of the airbag based on this discrimination.

  • Patent number: 6342683
Abstract: A seat weight measuring apparatus and supporting structure that can be installed in a vehicle without changing the height of the existing seat frame. This is done by shifting the centerline of the sensor unit from the centerline of the seat frame to take advantage of a space for the insertion of the sensor on the side of the frame. Accordingly, the seat height does not need to be raised by the thickness of the sensor unit as required in the conventional seat weight measuring apparatus. Depending on where space is available underneath the seat, the sensor units may also be positioned perpendicular to the seat rail, in an “X” shape, a “Y” shape, or a “T” shape.

  • Patent number: 6338472
Abstract: Mists atomized from siphon type two-fluid nozzles 14a and 14b are made to collide with each other within a secondary gas intake conduit 16 and secondary gas is supplied toward a collision point of the mists. A flow control plate 22 is provided within the secondary gas intake conduit 16 at a point upstream from the collision point to ensure that the secondary gas does not interfere with the collision of the mists and also to promote fine mists generated by the collision of the mists to mix with the secondary gas. Further, a secondary nozzle 24 is provided at the tip of the secondary gas intake conduit 16 to jet the secondary gas including the fine mists from the secondary nozzle 24. In the case of applying this mist atomizer 10 to the fuel cell 30, droplets and liquid water in the process gas is separated and removed at the mounting portion of the mist atomizer 10 in order to selectively supply mist of equal-sized particles only into the fuel cell.
