  • Publication number: 20120268915
Abstract: A lighting module has a base, a top, a longitudinal axis from the base's center to the top's center, and a lateral edge surrounding the axis. Solid state light sources at the base emit excitation light, having an excitation wavelength and an angular distribution centered about the axis, toward the top. A lens defines a lateral edge of the module, which extends from the base to the top and reflects the excitation light. A phosphor surface of the module, shaped as a funnel having a wide end proximate the top and a narrow end proximate the base, receives and absorbs the excitation light, producing phosphor light that exits the module through the lateral edge. The phosphor light's wavelength is greater than the excitation wavelength, and has an angular distribution at each point on the phosphor surface centered about a local surface normal with respect to the phosphor surface.

  • Patent number: 8237015
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the use of multiple site-specific recombination systems for use in transgene containment in plants. More specifically, the present invention describes coordinated excisional DNA recombination by multiple (e.g., dual) recombinases to achieve excision of unwanted transgenic DNA as well as recombinase-coding sequences themselves by self-excision. Further, the simultaneous use of multiple site-specific recombination systems in combination with controllable total sterility technology (i.e., no or reduced sexual reproduction), provides the production of environmentally safe, clean transgenic plants, enhancing the capability and public acceptance of transgenic technology for plant trait modification.

  • Publication number: 20110089861
Abstract: A mechanical interface for a glass bulb is provided. The mechanical interface includes a connector and an optical mount. The connector is in contact with the glass bulb. The connector may be a separate component attached to the glass bulb, or may be a continuous part of the glass bulb, such that the connector is itself made of glass. The optical mount is configured to receive the connector. In so receiving, the optical mount operatively couples with the connector so as to secure the glass bulb in a position. The optical mount is also configured to attach to a lamp housing. A solid state light source retrofit lamp may thus be formed of a lamp housing including a solid state light source light engine and its required components, a glass bulb, and a mechanical interface for the glass bulb.

  • Patent number: 7905639
Abstract: A side-loading LED module for a rear combination lamp is disclosed. One or more LEDs are mounted on a distal side of a printed circuit board, which also includes the circuitry that drives the one or more LEDs. The circuit board and a thermal pad are screwed/riveted to a heat sink, then the heat sink is mounted to a lateral face of a housing. The LEDs emit diverging light laterally inside the housing. One face of the housing is a faceted parabolic reflector, which receives the diverging light from the LEDs and reflects a collimated beam longitudinally to the front of the housing, where it passes through a clear cover and exits the lamp. The facets on the parabolic reflector angularly deviate portions of the reflected beam, so that the reflected light is collimated, and is angularly broader than a single collimated beam.

The LED lamp includes a transparent light pipe enclosed in an envelope, where the light pipe has a lower section and an upper section. The lamp also includes an LED in a recess at a lower end of the lower section, and a reflector formed by an indentation in an upper end of the upper section. The lower section may be a compound parabolic concentrator, and the upper section may be a tapered cylinder. The lower section of the light pipe collects light emitted from the LED, the upper section of the light pipe directs the collected light onto the reflector, and the reflector reflects the directed light in a radial direction.

  • Publication number: 20100195335
Abstract: An optical element is disclosed, for receiving relatively narrow light from a planar light-emitting diode (LED) source, and for redistributing the light into a relatively wide range of output angles that span a full 360 degrees. The element may be used to retrofit existing fixtures that were originally designed for incandescent bulbs with LED-based light sources that have similar emission profiles. The element is small enough so that it may be packaged along with an LED module and its control electronics in the volume envelope of an incandescent light bulb. An exemplary element is a single, transparent, rotationally-symmetric lens that has a batwing shape in cross-section, extending angularly away from a longitudinal axis. The lens also includes a variety of curved, straight, specular and optionally diffuse portions on its longitudinal and transverse faces, all of which cause a variety of internal and external reflections, refractions, and optionally scattering.

  • Patent number: 7762701
Abstract: A rear-loading LED module for a rear combination lamp is disclosed. One or more LEDs are mounted on a printed circuit board that electrically powers and mechanically holds them outside a faceted, parabolic reflector. Light emitted from the LEDs enters a light propagation region, formed between the reflective adjacent faces of two nested cylinders. The cylinders extend from the LEDs, outside the reflector, longitudinally through a hole at the vertex of the reflector, to the focus of the reflector. In some applications, the light propagation region may act as a beam homogenizer, so that light exiting the light propagation region may have roughly uniform intensity. Light from the light propagation region strikes an outwardly-flared reflector that directs it largely transversely onto the parabolic reflector. The parabolic reflector collimates the light and directs it longitudinally, through a transparent cover and out of the lamp.

  • Patent number: 7762700
Abstract: A rear-loading LED module for a rear combination lamp is disclosed. One or more LEDs are mounted on a printed circuit board that mechanically holds them at the focus of a faceted, parabolic reflector. Light from the LEDs diverges transversely and horizontally, and is collimated by the reflector, and the reflected collimated light is directed in a generally longitudinal direction out of the rear combination lamp, toward the viewer. The LED module itself is generally longitudinally oriented, and is insertable longitudinally into the interior of the reflector from a hole at the vertex of the reflector. The printed circuit board, an optional thermal pad adjacent to the printed circuit board, and a thermally conductive layer adjacent to the optional thermal pad are all generally planar layers, are all generally parallel to each other, and may optionally all have the same footprint. Together, the printed circuit board, the thermal pad and the thermally conductive layer may all form a generally planar ledge.

  • Publication number: 20100122366
Abstract: Genes can be introduced into plants that confer desirable traits such as, drought and stress tolerance, insect and pest resistance, as well as environmental qualities such as phyto-remediation. However, possibility for transgene escape to wild and non-transformed species raises commercial and ecological concerns. Disclosed herein are methods and compositions for generating plants with total vegetative growth for the reduction, and in some examples prevention of, transgene escape. The same methods and compositions can also be used to increase biomass production in a plant.
