    Abstract: A user configurable, modular port expansion system allows the user of a host system such as a USB-enabled personal computer to customize a desired configuration of one or more peripheral device modules without the use of cables between modules. The peripheral device modules are physically and electrically connectable to each other side-by-side between a hub end module and a power end module in any sequence so that there can be provided, within the limits of the host port specification, virtually any number of selected, expanded functions in any combination. The peripheral device modules may include, by way of example, a standard parallel DB-25 port module, a two-port serial PS/2 module, a two-port serial DB-9 module, a four- or seven-port USB hub, an RJ-11 Ethernet LAN module, and an RJ-11 modem module.

    Abstract: A PC Card is provided which can be inserted in the PCMCIA slot of a host system either right side up or inverted. The card includes a front portion conforming to the PCMCIA Type II thickness standard and a rear portion conforming to the PCMCIA Type III thickness standard. The card is so configured that two cards can be stacked in complementary fashion and inserted in a host system Type III slot, one card thus being connected to one of the 68-pin slot connectors and the other card being connected to the other 68-pin slot connector. Circuitry is provided for use in an invertible PC Card for electronically detecting the presence, type and orientation of the card, for managing power supply voltages and for directing, or, if the card is inverted, for redirecting the signals appearing at the various pins of the card connector as necessary.

    Abstract: A PCMCIA card structure includes a front connector, a frame, a substrate, and a sheet metal cover having a top cover panel. A ground plate having rearwardly extending ground contacts is carried on the upper surface of the connector. The frame includes an insulative cross beam disposed adjacent to the rear of the connector, the cross beam serving to support the top cover panel of the card, to prevent the top cover panel from contacting the connector ground plate or the contacts extending from the ground plate, and, along with portions of the ground plate, to close off the space between the connector and the front edge of the top cover panel. The ground plate has a transverse length shorter than that of the connector, thereby defining end shoulder surfaces along the upper surface of the connector. The top cover panel includes a pair of laterally spaced, forwardly extending tabs, each tab overlying an end shoulder surface on the connector.
