  • Publication number: 20100128256
Abstract: A method of optically analysing a sample, which method comprises directing one or more frequencies of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) through a sample and onto a partially reflective surface (9) that allows EMR (6) directed thereon to be both reflected and transmitted, which reflected EMR (12) is directed back through the sample such that the pathlength through the sample is different for the transmitted EMR (10) and reflected EMR (12), which transmitted EMR and reflected EMR are both detected by one or more detectors (11,15), characterised in that the optical absorbance of the sample at the one or more wavelengths of EMR is calculated from the difference between the transmitted EMR (10) and reflected EMR (12).

  • Patent number: 7636604
Abstract: A touch region for a controller having a touch screen that, when touched, makes a setting change to the controller. In one illustrative embodiment, the controller displays a display image on the touch screen, wherein the touch screen has a defined touch region that when touched makes a setting change to the controller. The display image has a portion that coincides with the touch region, wherein when the touch region is touched, at least part of the portion of the display image that coincides with the touch region changes from a first display image to a second display image to indicate a setting change of the controller. A subsequent touch to the touch region may cause at least part of the portion of the display image that coincides with the touch region to change from the second display image to a third display image to indicate a subsequent setting change of the controller.

  • Publication number: 20070269141
Abstract: Barriers for flood defence and other purposes are often constructed using sand bags. The strength of these barriers is limited and the invention seeks to address this problem. The invention provides a tie formed as a single injection moulded item placed between layers of sandbags to help to hold them together. The tie has two rigid triangular end plates (4) and (5) linked by a flexible arm (11). The end plates are formed with protruding spikes (6) shaped with a barb so that they will easily penetrate the fabric of a sandbag but are difficult to pull out. In use, each tie is placed between layers of sandbags so that spikes of respective plates (4) and (5) become anchored to adjoining bags. The bags of the barrier are thus held together and any irregularities in it are accommodated by the flexibility of the arm (11). Slots (14) and lugs (15) allow a plurality of ties to be linked together as may be required when oversize sandbags are employed.

  • Publication number: 20070180937
Abstract: A system for inspecting rail tracks for loose connections (4, 7) employs moulded plastic caps (8). The caps carry arrows (9) or other indicators aligned with a datum direction such as the direction of the rails. Any loosening of the connectors (4, 7) is immediately apparent from the fact that the arrows are no longer aligned. The invention avoids the need for individual manual torquing of each connector during routine safety inspections.
