  • Publication number: 20140345389
Abstract: Apparatus that detects the pressure of water that can move through a water channel (26) towards and away from a pressure sensor (22), wherein the apparatus is constructed to avoid damage from freezing water. The water channel is constructed with a narrow channel portion (40) and a wide channel portion (42) connected in series, with the narrow channel portion lying closer to the pressure sensor. When the ambient temperature falls below the freezing temperature of water, water in the narrow channel portion freezes before water in the wide channel portion freezes, and frozen water in the narrow channel portion acts like a plug to prevent water (or ice) from moving toward the pressure sensor.

  • Patent number: 8789856
Abstract: An apparatus for holding a cover in a closed orientation substantially covering a chassis face of a unit; the unit containing equipment in an equipment volume; the equipment volume being partially bounded by the chassis face; includes: a positioning structure coupling the cover with the unit for selectively situating the cover in the closed orientation or in an other orientation; and a latching structure configured for latchingly engaging the chassis face and the cover for holding the cover in the closed orientation when the latching structure is in a first orientation. The latching structure does not engage the chassis face and the cover when the latching structure is in a second orientation. The latching structure is situated substantially entirely outside the equipment volume.

  • Publication number: 20140156406
Abstract: A communication system with client devices in communication with at least one communication network. User data stores are also in communication with the communications network and store user data of users using respective ones of the client devices. Offer data stores also in communication with the communications network store offers from merchants. A narrowcasting engine includes an active data gathering module to collect the user data, and an active learning module to generate a user profile based on the user data. The communication engine selects dynamically offers from the offer data store based on the profile, and communicates the selected offers in the offer data store to the users.

  • Patent number: 8742777
Abstract: Embodiments include a method and system for testing an electric circuit. A carrier signal of a first frequency is modulated with a multi-tone signal to generate a test signal. The test signal is applied to an input of a circuit under test (CUT). A crest factor of an output signal that corresponds to the test signal received at an output of the CUT is measured. A crest factor differential between the measured crest factor and a reference crest factor is determined. If the crest factor differential exceeds a threshold value, the CUT is determined to be defective.

  • Publication number: 20140147423
Abstract: The present invention relates to fibulin-3 protein and a pharmaceutical composition comprising the fibulin-3 protein as an active ingredient for inhibiting the growth of cancer stem cells. More particularly, in cancer stem cells separated from H460 and A549 cells, which are non-small-cell lung cancer cells, using ALDH1 activity as a marker, fibulin-3 induces the reductions of wnt/?-catenin, MMP2 and 7, which display characteristics of cancer stem cells, thereby decreasing the activated growth and penetration of the cancer stem cells. In addition, the purified fibulin-3 protein inhibits the growth of the non-small-cell lung cancer cell line A549, the breast cancer cell line MDA-MB231, and the cancer stem cell line active ALDH1. Therefore, fibulin-3 can be valuably used as an active ingredient of the pharmaceutical composition for inhibiting the growth of cancer stem cells.

  • Publication number: 20140134769
Abstract: Nanostructure array optoelectronic devices are disclosed. The optoelectronic device may have one or more intermediate electrical contacts that are physically and electrically connected to sidewalls of the array of nanostructures. The contacts may allow different photo-active regions of the optoelectronic device to be independently controlled. For example, one color light may be emitted or detected independently of another using the same group of one or more nanostructures. The optoelectronic device may be a pixilated device that may serve as an LED display or imaging sensor. The pixilated device may have an array of nanostructures with alternating rows and columns of sidewall electrical contacts at different layers. A pixel may be formed at the intersection of a row contact and a column contact. As one example, a single group of one or more nanostructures has a blue sub-pixel, a green sub-pixel, and a red sub-pixel.

  • Patent number: 8702441
Abstract: A computing device includes a Mini DisplayPort or other standardized plug and port connection that is fully internalized within the full device housing. The port can be affixed or coupled to a printed circuit board, with a display cable having a mating plug that is plugged into the port. To prevent the inadvertent uncoupling of the plug from the port, one or more clips, clamps, fixtures, or other cable retention components can hold the cable and/or plug in place at or near where the plug inserts into the Mini DisplayPort or other standardized communication port. Added stability to the cable can also be provided at or near such location.
