  • Publication number: 20020190836
Abstract: Electromagnetic devices are provided including an electrically conductive core having an inner diameter defining an opening therethrough and an outer diameter, the core having sharp edges extending circumferentially around the inner diameter and around the outer diameter thereof. A plurality of polymeric protection members are wrapped circumferentially around the core and positioned adjacent the sharp edges of the core. The protection members have a short leg positioned adjacent an end of the core. The short leg may have a length selected to provide a substantially flat surface on the end of the core when the protection members are wrapped around the core. In various embodiments, an adhesive layer may be provided between the protection members and the core. A coated wire is wrapped around the core so as to be magnetically coupled thereto and around the polymeric protection members so as to be displaced from the sharp edges of the core.

  • Patent number: 6488747
Abstract: A gas separation system for separating a feed gas mixture into a first component of the gas mixture and a second component of the gas mixture includes an adsorbent bed assembly and an axial or centrifugal compression machine. The adsorbent bed assembly includes a number of flow paths for receiving adsorbent material therein for preferentially adsorbing the first gas component in response to increasing pressure in the flow paths in comparison to the second gas component. Each flow path includes a pair of opposite ends and a valve communicating with each opposite end for controlling a flow of the feed gas mixture through the flow paths. Preferably, the compression machine consists of a gas turbine including a number of pressure inlet and outlet ports coupled to the valves for exposing each flow path to a number of different pressures between an upper pressure and a lower pressure for separating the first gas component from the second gas component.

  • Publication number: 20020169458
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and device for preventing cerebral embolization during endovascular procedures in the carotid arteries. The invention comprises a guide catheter and balloon, which may selectively occlude the common carotid artery, and further comprises a wire and balloon, which may selectively occlude the internal carotid artery. Occlusion of the common carotid artery will induce retrograde flow at the site, redirecting emboli to the external carotid artery. Occlusion of the internal carotid artery reduces the risk of emboli migrating to the brain, and allows clearance of the site by antegrade blood flow from the common carotid artery. Occlusion of both the common and internal carotid arteries induces a quiescent state at the site during the procedure. Control of blood flow by selective inflation and deflation of either or both balloons, in concert with the procedures, will reduce the risk of emboli migrating to the brain.

  • Patent number: 6477492
Abstract: A Perceptual Speech Distortion Metric (PSDM) generates perceptual distortion values for voice prompts received from a voice response system by comparing the received voice prompts with reference signals associated with the same states in the voice response system. The perceptual distortion values identify the voice prompts as either correct or incorrect responses to signal generator inputs and also quantify an amount of perceptual distortion in the voice prompts.

  • Publication number: 20020152732
Abstract: An open flow fluid filter has a pleated main filter element having a plurality of pleats in a closed loop having an outer perimeter defined by a plurality of outer pleat tips, and an inner perimeter defined by a plurality of inner pleat tips. The loop has a hollow interior extending along an axis. Fluid to be filtered flows through the main filter element from an upstream dirty side to a downstream clean side, and flows axially in the hollow interior. The main filter element has an axial flow passage extending along the axis and circumscribing the hollow interior and has a flow perimeter greater than the inner perimeter. A safety filter element downstream of the main filter element filters both the axial flow in the hollow interior and additional flow between the flow perimeter and the inner perimeter. A filter with additional flow is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6460377
Abstract: Apparatus for testing air flow through a dual-stage blowhead that includes an adapter block with a blowhead cup for releasably receiving a dual-stage blowhead. The adapter block has a first block passage for feeding test air to a first inlet of the blowhead for conducting blow air to a parison, and a second block passage for feeding test air to a second inlet of the blowhead separate from the first inlet for conducting finish cooling air. Air is directed from a common source separately to the first and second block passages, and air flow is measured in each path. When air flow through the finish cooling air path is less than a predetermined threshold, or less than a predetermined ratio with respect to the final blow air, this may indicate a need to redrill or otherwise rework the finish cooling passages in the dual-stage blowhead.
