  • Publication number: 20060084759
Abstract: A dihydroxyphenyl cross-linked macromolecular network is provided that is useful in artificial tissue and tissue engineering applications, particularly to provide a synthetic, implantable tissue matrix material for a wide variety of tissue types. In particular, artificial or synthetic cartilage, vocal cord material, vitreous material, soft tissue material and mitral valve material are described. In an embodiment, the network is composed of tyramine-substituted and cross-linked hyaluronan molecules, wherein cross-linking is achieved via peroxidase-mediated dityramine-linkages that can be performed in vivo. The dityramine bonds provide a stable, coherent hyaluronan-based hydrogel with desired physical properties.

  • Patent number: 6594409
Abstract: An optical component is formed on a silicon on insulator (SOI) substrate and has an array waveguide that demultiplexes an input light signal into N channels and provides that light signal to a corresponding set of N waveguide structures formed on a surface of the SOI substrate. The N waveguide structures provide the N channels of light to N optical detectors. Each optical detector is bonded to a surface of a corresponding one of the waveguide structures. The N channels of light pass through the N waveguide structures and are coupled into the N optical detectors so that light from a corresponding channel of the array waveguide is coupled into a corresponding optical detector and converted into an electrical signal.

  • Patent number: 6515027
Abstract: This invention relates to substituted benzanilides which are ligands, agonists or antagonists, of the CCR5 receptor. In addition, this invention relates to the treatment and prevention of disease states mediated by CCR5, including, but not limited to, asthma and atopic disorders (for example, atopic dermatitis and allergies), rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis and other fibrotic diseases, atherosclerosis, psoriasis, autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel disease, all in mammals, by the use of substituted benzanilides which are CCR5 receptor antagonists. Furthermore, since CD8+ T cells have been implicated in COPD, CCR5 may play a role in their recruitment and therefore antagonists to CCR5 could provide potential therapeutic in the treatment of COPD. Also, since CCR5 is a co-receptor for the entry of HIV into cells, selective receptor ligands may be useful in the treatment of HIV infection.

  • Patent number: 5867290
Abstract: Methods and apparati for spatially encoding and decoding spread spectrum communication signals using broad band light sources are disclosed. The encoding algorithms involve the use of orthogonal spatial wavelets, which are preferably discrete attenuation functions of light from different sources so that the discrete attenuation function is imposed upon the spectrum of the light source. The function may be used either merely for providing an encoded channel or by providing a second mask that may be, for example, the complement of the discrete attenuation function so that the light beam is discrete with the first attenuation function.

  • Patent number: 5728815
Abstract: The role for a substantially purified human growth factor preparation is shown to contain a distinct polypeptide with apparent M.sub.r on SDS/PAGE of about 220 kD, and to be distinct from bFGF, with a most active fraction at about 220 kD. A human growth factor polypeptide of 157 kD was identified, in human bone marrow aspirates and from bone stromal cells, by immunoblotting with the mAb MS 329, and by affinity isolation using a MS 329 antibody column. A PSA stimulating autocrine factor, PSAF, that is precipitable in ammonium sulfate at between 60-80% saturation is able to induce PSA expression and secretion, and serves as an indicator of androgen independent prostate cell growth.

  • Patent number: 5671281
Abstract: A system is disclosed for selectively altering the functional characteristics of a data processing system without physical or mechanical manipulation by providing an access code from a remote personal identification number generator to a secure controller and store of the computer system. This enables remote authorization of change in function of the computer system, such as performance tune up, speeding clock time, changing function and like changes. The computer system is first manufactured having a predetermined set of functional characteristics. A multibit alterable code which includes a functional characteristic definition is then initially loaded into physically secure, nonvolatile memory within the data processing system, utilizing an existing bus, or a fusible link which may be opened after loading is complete.

  • Patent number: 5657335
Abstract: Several methods have been found to make p-type gallium nitride. P-type gallium nitride has long been sought for electronic devices. N-type gallium nitride is readily available. Discovery of p-type gallium nitride and the methods for making it will enable its use in ultraviolet and blue light-emitting diodes and lasers. pGaN will further enable blue photocathode elements to be made. Molecular beam epitaxy on substrates held at the proper temperatures, assisted by a nitrogen beam of the proper energy produced several types of p-type GaN with hole concentrations of about 5.times.10.sup.11 /cm.sup.3 and hole mobilities of about 500 cm.sup.2 /V-sec, measured at 250.degree. K. P-type GaN can be formed of unintentionally-doped material or can be doped with magnesium by diffusion, ion implantation, or co-evaporation. When applicable, the nitrogen can be substituted with other group III elements such as Al.

  • Patent number: 5586129
Abstract: A parity bit memory simulator including a parity bit memory formed of a single bit memory of fixed address length, which replaces the single bit parity RAM of variable address length of conventional memory modules, is connected with its address signal line to the data bus of the memory module so that the parity bit memory provides and stores parity bits for the computer system without changing the circuit layout of the data memory or caring about the capacity of the memory module. A voltage level detector and a refreshing operation detector can be installed in the parity bit memory to improve an error detecting function of a dynamic random access memory module in the parity bit system.
