Abstract: Electrical medical leads having active fixation electrodes, particularly helix electrodes intended to be screwed into body tissue, e.g., the heart, are disclosed having selectively applied insulation to optimize exposed electrode surface area and dispose the exposed electrode surface area toward tissue that is less traumatized by injury caused by screwing in the fixation helix. In a preferred fabrication method, an outer helical surface is masked by contact with a masking tube while a dielectric coating is applied to the inner helical surface of the coil turns of the helix, and the masking tube is removed when the dielectric coating has set. In one variation, at least one aperture is formed through the masking tube sidewall exposing an area of the outer helical surface thereby interrupting the uninsulated outer helical electrode.

Abstract: An apparatus for dispensing a predetermined amount of adhesive weighted tape includes a controller adapted to receive a request for a desired amount of adhesive weighted tape and an elongated track member adapted to receive a supply of the adhesive weighted tape. A sensor is mounted adjacent a second end of the track member. The sensor in communication with the controller is operable to transmit a signal to the controller corresponding to a measured amount of weighted tape passing thereby. A motive apparatus in communication with the controller is adapted to move the weighted tape from a first end to the second end of the track member in response to the signal from the sensor. A cutting member disposed adjacent the second end of the track member is in communication with the controller and is adapted to cut the weighted tape in response to the signal from the sensor.

Abstract: A method of displaying an image having a first aspect ratio with a display device having a second aspect ratio includes receiving image data for the image, buffering the image data and creating a frame of the image at the first aspect ratio, defining a first sub-frame and a second sub-frame for the frame of the image at the second aspect ratio, including spatially offsetting the second sub-frame from the first sub-frame in one direction, and alternating between displaying the first sub-frame in a first position and the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position with the display device, including optically scaling a displayed image of the first sub-frame and a displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction.

Abstract: The present invention is directed toward methods for regulating biological pacemaking activity and devices used in such regulation. Such regulation can be accomplished by introducing genetic material to the heart by transfecting heart cells of the atrium or ventricle with an oligonucleotide, small interfering RNA, that silence KCNJ2, and suppress the IK1 current. Suppression (or silencing) of KCNJ2 subsequently induces pacemaker-like activities in previously regular myocytes. This invention provides for methods of targeted delivery using a fluid delivery catheter. Such a catheter allows the targeting of a specific area in the atrium or the ventricle of the heart. Also, combination methods of treating arrhythmia with traditional device-based therapies (e.g., pacemakers and defibrillators) and an oligonucleotide of the subject invention.

Abstract: A liner for a ladle is formed of a body of refractory material defining a hollow interior which is bounded by a continuous sidewall. Within the interior is a barrier of refractory material which faces the interior surface of part of the sidewall and is spaced inwardly therefrom in the hollow interior of the body to define with said facing part of said sidewall a spout for discharging molten metal, in use, from the ladle. The barrier has two longitudinal edge surfaces received at two facing inner portions of the sidewall respectively which are extended inwardly. By providing these inward extensions the barrier can be positioned within the interior of the liner thereby obviating the need for an outward extension from the liner body to define a spout. This enables the liner to be used with ladle shells without the shell requiring modification to accommodate such an outward extension.

An electro-optic phase modulator having at least one optical waveguide and at least one active electrode formed on a face of the substrate, the active electrode having a wider upper portion and a narrower lower portion, the lower portions of the active electrode aligned with and extending over one of the optical waveguides. A bridge electrode has at least one narrower lower portion, and a wider upper portion, the lower portion for being arranged over an optical waveguide formed in a substrate.

Abstract: A gap setting tool for setting a gap between a pair of panels includes a first body portion, a second body portion, and a pin having a predetermined diameter. The first body portion, the second body portion, and the pin are movable relative to one another. One of the panels is fixed and the other panel is movably mounted adjacent thereto. The body portions are operable to be attached to respective ones of the pair of panels, such as by vacuum cups or the like, and drawn toward one another with the pin in the gap until the panels contact the pin.

Abstract: The dose of dialysis in terms of urea clearance is marginal in many hemodialysis patients, and metabolic acidosis as determined by the pre-dialysis serum HCO3 level is common. A dialysate that included citric acid rather than acetic acid as acidifying agent provides superior performance properties. Citrate-containing dialysate was used exclusively in 22 hemodialysis patients. Initially, only 8 of the 22 patients had a pre-dialysis serum HCO3>23 mEq/L (lower limit of normal), however, after 12 weeks of dialysis using the citrate-containing dialysate, the serum HCO3 normalized in 15 patients (p=0.0001, Chi-square). Dialysis variables were kept constant in 19 of the patients, who also used and reused the same dialyzer model throughout. In these patients, the initial average urea reduction ratio (URR) was 68.5±5.9%, and after treatment with the citrate dialysate disclosed herein, this ratio had increased to 73±5.3% (p<0.03). SpKt/V, calculated using the Daugirdas II formula, also increased from 1.23±0.

A controller receives data from the compressor representing operation conditions, such as load step, suction pressure, and discharge pressure. Abstract: The present invention discloses a system and method of searching, exploring or otherwise navigating the contents of a collection of networked documents or pages. In a preferred embodiment, this system provides a user with a multimedia display format which intuitively indicates, without the user opening a document or web page, the characteristics of the document or web pages. Additionally, this system permits a user to move between such documents without extensively entering explicit search terms. With this system, the contents of Internet web pages may be evaluated by incrementally adjusting through a multimedia display of a continuum of related web pages, which are identified as having keywords that match any of a collection of keywords generated from an initially-inputted keyword. This system further comprises a dial or rotary control that allows the user to select, in a continuous fashion, among such displayed, Internet web pages.

Abstract: A dual conveyor jet impingement oven having a blower box with at least one air inlet opening and at least two air outlet openings and a heating space adjacent to and in fluid communication with the blower box. Disposed within the heating space are two spaced apart pairs of spaced apart heated air distribution plenums, which form a central return air conduit therebetween. The central return air conduit has a return air outlet end in fluid communication with the blower box and the spaced apart heated air distribution plenums have a heated air inlet opening in fluid communication with the at least two air outlet openings. A horizontal heating surface is disposed between each pair of spaced apart heated air distribution plenums, each of which has a perforated heated air distribution plate facing the horizontal heating surface.

Abstract: A method and apparatus to control a digital projector. After receiving a turn-on request, the temperature associated with the light source is sensed and compared to a predetermined threshold. If the temperature is below the threshold, then the digital projector's light source is turned on. Otherwise, if the temperature is not below the threshold, the digital projector's cooling device is turned on and the turning on of the light source is delayed until the temperature falls below the threshold. After receiving a turn-off request, the cooling device is turned off coincident with the light source and without regard to the light-source temperature.
