Patent number: 10605125Abstract: A rocker arm assembly includes an outer arm having first and second low lift lobe contacting surfaces, an inner arm, and a latch assembly. The inner arm includes first and second opposed sidewalls extending between a first end and a second end, and a high lift lobe contacting surface disposed between the first and second opposed sidewalls. The first end is pivotably secured to the outer arm and operably associated with an engine valve, and the second end is operably associated with a lash adjuster and defining a latch bore. The latch assembly is movable between a first configuration and a second configuration. In the first configuration, the latch assembly engages the outer arm such that the outer arm rotates with the inner arm, and in the second configuration, the latch assembly disengages the outer arm such that the outer arm rotates independently from the inner arm.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2018Date of Patent: March 31, 2020Assignee: Eaton CorporationInventors: James E. McCarthy, Matthew Vance

Publication number: 20170248073Abstract: A modified rocker assembly having an offset end is designed for engine heads having an obstruction preventing use of a symmetric switching rocker arm. The modified rocker assembly has an obstructed side and a non-obstructed side and has an outer structure with a first end, and an inner rocker structure fitting within the outer structure, the inner structure also having a first end. The modified rocker assembly has an axle pivotally connecting the first ends of inner structure to the outer structure, such that the inner structure pivots within the outer structure around the axle. At least one torsion spring on one side of the axle rotationally biases the inner structure relative to the outer structure. The outer structure is offset on the obstructed side as it extends from the second end toward the first end, creating the first offset portion to provide additional clearance on the obstructed side.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2017Publication date: August 31, 2017Inventor: James E. Publication number: 20040055575Abstract: A system and method for controlling pressure within a common rail fluid distribution system use variable gains for a PID and feed forward controller that controls a pump that pressurizes the common rail. The pressure controller implements a combined feedback/feed forward control strategy with variable gains based on engine speed and a fluid quantity. In one embodiment, the feedback control loop includes proportional, integral, and derivative terms with variable gains determined based on pumped fuel quantity and engine speed. Alternatively, the proportional, integral, and derivative gains are determined based on injected fuel quantity per engine cycle and engine speed, or based on pump output, i.e. the product of pumped fluid quantity and engine speed. A variable gain feed forward control has its gain based on pumped fuel per cycle and engine speed, or alternatively based on pump output per unit time.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2002Publication date: March 25, 2004Inventors: James E. McCarthy, Dennis McDonald, James A. West, Andrew May

Publication number: 20040055576Abstract: A system and method for engine control determine a spilled fuel quantity for use in controlling pressure of a common rail fuel system. In one embodiment, a spilled fuel estimate is determined based on rail pressure and engine speed. Another embodiment determines a spilled fuel estimate based on a leakage quantity and a spill control quantity. The leakage quantity represents the amount of fuel leaked past the internal passages inside the injectors and is based on rail pressure alone. The spill control quantity is based on rail pressure and injector energizing time. The spill control quantity represents the fuel used to actuate the injector allowing the injected fuel into the cylinder during the combustion cycle. A more accurate determination of the quantity of fuel pumped based on spilled fuel and injected fuel may be used to improve the common rail pressure control, for example.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2002Publication date: March 25, 2004Inventor: James E. McCarthy

Publication number: 20040025849Abstract: A system and method for controlling multiple fuel injections during a single combustion cycle for a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine having a common rail fuel distribution system determine the beginning of injection for the pilot and main injections based on crankshaft position while post injections are based on the main injection timing and an injector turn off delay determined using actual rail pressure. A rail pressure setpoint is determined based on current engine operating conditions including one or more fluid temperatures and current operating mode to provide more accurate injection control.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2002Publication date: February 12, 2004Inventors: James A. West, James E. McCarthy
