  • Publication number: 20220154653
Abstract: A method for controlling a transmission of a vehicle during cylinder deactivation can comprise receiving and processing a zero or negative torque requirement for the vehicle. Receiving and processing vehicle speed data can be included to determine a vehicle speed for the vehicle. A cylinder deactivation mode can be implemented for a valvetrain of a multi-cylinder engine of the vehicle, wherein the cylinder deactivation mode comprises deactivating one or more intake valve, one or more exhaust valve, and fuel injection for one or more cylinder of the multi-cylinder engine. Selecting one of an in-gear mode and a neutral mode for a transmission of the vehicle can be included while implementing the cylinder deactivation mode and while maintaining the determined vehicle speed.

  • Patent number: 11326533
Abstract: A method for exhaust temperature management in a multiple-cylinder, reciprocating-piston engine, comprising sensing a low temperature condition of the exhaust and implementing an increased heat output engine cycle pattern for the engine based on the sensed low temperature condition. The increased heat output engine cycle pattern comprises deactivating fuel injection to a first cylinder of the engine, the first cylinder comprising a piston reciprocating between top-dead-center and bottom-dead-center. Also, activating engine braking mode on the first cylinder by opening one or more valves when the piston is away from bottom-dead-center during a compression stroke. A second cylinder of the engine is fired in a combustion mode while the first cylinder is in engine braking mode.

  • Patent number: 11300061
Abstract: A method for engine braking on a type III valvetrain diesel engine comprises, on a first downstroke of a reciprocating piston, deactivating a normal intake lift profile on a first intake valve to implement a deactivated intake profile. Before a first upstroke of the reciprocating piston completes, a late intake valve closing lift profile is actuating on a second intake valve and beginning an engine brake lift profile on a first exhaust valve. On a second downstroke of the reciprocating piston, the engine brake lift profile on the first exhaust valve is completing and a normal exhaust lift profile is deactivating on a second exhaust valve to implement a deactivated exhaust profile on the second exhaust valve. Before a second upstroke of the reciprocating piston completes, a second engine brake lift profile is beginning on the first exhaust valve.

  • Publication number: 20220065178
Abstract: When selecting cylinders of a multi-cylinder diesel engine in an engine system for cylinder deactivation (CDA), a method can comprise designating a first resonance around a first periodic frequency output of the engine system as a primary boundary and designating a second resonance around a second periodic frequency output of the engine system as a secondary boundary. Selecting cylinders can comprise selecting one of half, one third, or two thirds of the multiple cylinders for CDA while firing the remaining multiple cylinders. The selection can be made so that the periodic frequency output of the engine is between the primary and secondary boundaries. A compact periodic frequency band can be implemented to further restrict the selection of cylinders for CDA. The first periodic frequency output can be about 15 Hertz+/?1.5 Hertz and the second periodic frequency output can be between 30-40 Hertz+/?1.5 Hertz.

  • Publication number: 20220049662
Abstract: A method for jumping cylinder deactivation (“CDA”) modes to avoid a primary powertrain resonant frequency in a six-cylinder diesel engine-powered machine comprises operating an engine between an idled condition and a first engine speed limit in one of a two-cylinder CDA mode or a four-cylinder CDA mode. The method operates the engine between the first engine speed limit and a second engine speed limit in a three-cylinder CDA mode. The first engine speed limit is an engine speed below which the two-cylinder or four-cylinder CDA mode causes the machine to operate below a primary powertrain resonant frequency and also above which the three-cylinder CDA mode causes the machine to operate above the primary powertrain resonant frequency, thus avoiding the primary powertrain resonant frequency during operation. A second engine speed limit can be used to select a CDA mode that causes the machine to operate above the primary powertrain resonant frequency.
