  • Patent number: 11821350
Abstract: An exhaust control system for a vehicle includes a temperature sensor positioned downstream of an exhaust burner and upstream of an SCR catalyst in an exhaust system. The temperature sensor is configured to generate a measurement signal indicative a temperature of exhaust flowing through the exhaust system at an outlet of a DPF positioned downstream of the exhaust burner. An exhaust control module is configured to turn the exhaust burner on to heat the exhaust, monitor the temperature of the exhaust based on the measurement signal, subsequent to turning the exhaust burner on, turn the exhaust burner off based on an upper threshold temperature of the exhaust, and, subsequent to turning the exhaust burner off, turn the exhaust burner on based on a lower threshold temperature of the exhaust. The lower threshold temperature is less than the upper threshold temperature.

  • Patent number: 11473511
Abstract: A method for jumping cylinder deactivation (“CDA”) modes to avoid a primary powertrain resonant frequency in a six-cylinder diesel engine-powered machine comprises operating an engine between an idled condition and a first engine speed limit in one of a two-cylinder CDA mode or a four-cylinder CDA mode. The method operates the engine between the first engine speed limit and a second engine speed limit in a three-cylinder CDA mode. The first engine speed limit is an engine speed below which the two-cylinder or four-cylinder CDA mode causes the machine to operate below a primary powertrain resonant frequency and also above which the three-cylinder CDA mode causes the machine to operate above the primary powertrain resonant frequency, thus avoiding the primary powertrain resonant frequency during operation. A second engine speed limit can be used to select a CDA mode that causes the machine to operate above the primary powertrain resonant frequency.

  • Patent number: 11459917
Abstract: A system and method of controlling a cylinder deactivation mechanism can comprise executing a valve lift event configured to lift a valve via a rocker arm. The rocker arm can be configured with a controllable latch in a latched condition, wherein the controllable latch is configured with an edge that is clamped in a recess in the rocker arm during the valve lift event, a clamp force supplied in part by pressure from the valve lift event. A deactivation signal can be sent to select the unlatched condition to collapse the controllable latch from the recess while the controllable latch is configured in the valve lift event with the edge clamped in the recess. A subsequent valve lift event can have actuation deactivated by collapsing the controllable latch from the recess once the valve lift event is complete and the clamp force is removed.

  • Patent number: 11454181
Abstract: A system and method for improving the functioning of a turbocharged diesel engine equipped with a cylinder deactivation system includes detecting when the turbocharged diesel engine is at risk of compressor surge, and then delaying the implementation of the cylinder deactivation. The delay may be a set period of time, or it may be determined by performing a set of instructions effective for estimating changes in intake manifold pressures over time if cylinders are deactivated, and then comparing the intake manifold pressure estimates to acceptable intake manifold pressure information. A formula for performing the required estimates is provided.

  • Patent number: 11371450
Abstract: A method for entering and exiting cylinder deactivation modes in a diesel engine, comprises monitoring an engine speed from an idle engine speed to a governed engine speed and monitoring an engine load. If the monitored engine speed is the idle engine speed up to the governed engine speed, and if the engine load is less than the predetermined low load condition, then implementation of a cylinder deactivation mode is restricted to one of a 2 cylinder deactivation mode, a 3 cylinder deactivation mode, or a 4 cylinder deactivation mode. A cylinder deactivation mode is selected for engine operation among the 2 cylinder deactivation mode, the 3 cylinder deactivation mode, and the 4 cylinder deactivation mode to operate the engine at an effective frequency that avoids two resonant frequencies of the vehicle and to operate the engine below a torsional vibration limit.
