  • Publication number: 20160099437
Abstract: Opal glass compositions and devices incorporating opal glass compositions are described herein. The compositions solve problems associated with the use of opal glasses as light-scattering layers in electroluminescent devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes. In particular, embodiments solve the problem of high light absorption within the opal glass layer as well as the problem of an insufficiently high refractive index that results in poor light collection by the layer. Particular devices comprise light-emitting diodes incorporating light scattering layers formed of high-index opal glasses of high light scattering power that exhibit minimal light attenuation through light absorption within the matrix phases of the glasses.

  • Publication number: 20160060161
Abstract: Methods and apparatus provide for: a glass substrate having a first strain to failure characteristic, a first elastic modulus characteristic, and a flexural strength; and a coating applied over the glass substrate to produce a composite structure in order to increase a hardness thereof, where the coating has a second strain to failure characteristic and a second elastic modulus characteristic, where the first strain to failure characteristic is higher than the second strain to failure characteristic, and one of: (i) the first elastic modulus characteristic is above a minimum predetermined threshold such that any reduction of the flexural strength of the glass substrate resulting from application of the coating is mitigated; and (ii) the first elastic modulus characteristic is below a maximum predetermined threshold such that any reduction of the strain to failure of the glass substrate resulting from application of the coating is mitigated.

  • Patent number: 9250386
Abstract: Disclosed is an optical fiber having a core with an alkali metal oxide dopant in an peak amount greater than about 0.002 wt. % and less than about 0.1 wt. %. The alkali metal oxide concentration varies with a radius of the optical fiber. By appropriately selecting the concentration of alkali metal oxide dopant in the core and the cladding, a low loss optical fiber may be obtained. Also disclosed are several methods of making the optical fiber including the steps of forming an alkali metal oxide-doped rod, and adding additional glass to form a draw perform. Preferably, the draw preform has a final outer dimension (d2), wherein an outer dimension (d1) of the rod is less than or equal to 0.06 times the final outer dimension (d2). In a preferred embodiment, the alkali metal oxide-doped rod is inserted into the centerline hole of a preform to form an assembly.

  • Patent number: 9244482
Abstract: A device for the application of a preload between a subsea wellhead and a conductor housing includes an activating member, a support housing, a locking member, and at least one element for securing the support housing relative to the wellhead. Movement of the activating member causes an inclined lateral movement of the locking member. The activating member carries a ratchet having a multiplicity of serrations which have a regular pitch in the activating direction and the support housing carries at least two latches which allow the relative movement and can engage the ratchet to inhibit movement reverse to the activating direction. The discrete locking positions provided by one of the latches are positionally out of phase with the discrete locking positions provided by the other latch or latches. A support member is positioned to be moved laterally in response to movement of the activating member and to support the locking member against the engagement zone of the datum member.

  • Patent number: 9121238
Abstract: A running tool for use in the insertion of an object such as a casing hanger into a subsea well includes a body and a hollow mandrel moveable within the body. Engagement dogs are supported within the body and are moveable to engage the object, the mandrel having a first part and a transition part, the transition part being shaped to cause out-ward movement of the dogs when the mandrel is in a given position within the body and to allow movement of the dogs for position of the mandrel spaced form the given position. The tool has an emergency release feature wherein the transition part is releasably attached to the first part by shear pins which shear in response to a sufficient increase in pressure within the mandrel to allow the transition part to separate from the first part.
