Patent number: 6580793Abstract: An echo canceling system with self deactivation includes an echo canceller based on an adaptive filter, and an echo detector. The adaptive filter determines an estimate of an echo signal present in an untreated signal received from a “near” end of a communications channel. In order to produce an echo-canceled received signal, the echo canceller subtracts the estimated echo from the untreated received signal. The echo detector compares the energy of the untreated received signal and the energy of the echo-canceled received signal. The difference represents the energy in the estimated echo signal generated by the adaptive filter. If this energy is large, significant echo is present. The echo canceller remains activated, and the echo detector selects the echo-canceled received signal for output. If the estimated echo energy is small, little or no cancelable echo is present. The echo canceller is deactivated, and the echo detector selects the untreated received signal for output.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1999Date of Patent: June 17, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: James Patrick Dunn, Peng Zhang

Patent number: 6359980Abstract: A method apparatus for finding and assigning both commercially valuable and vanity (CSV) numbers in a telecommunications system that permits number portability. CSV Numbers are identified by a rules based process that combs the unused number database for valuable combination and saves those numbers in a special database. Those numbers that are not so identified stay in the unused database for general assignment. To assign a CSV number, a similar process is used to generate candidate numbers based on a desired keyword, and then the candidate numbers are used to query the special database and even the general unused number database to get available candidates. The available candidates are offered to the requesting user and the user may accept or decline.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2000Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Robert Petrelli, Cecil Bernard Cates, James Patrick Dunn, Ronald Bruce Martin, Jack Ray Penrod, John William Peterson, Deborah Margaret Stockert

Patent number: 6324176Abstract: Apparatus and a method for interfacing between the Internet and the Telephone Network. A time slot interchange is enhanced by the addition of a supplementary memory for storing data for accumulating Internet packets. When a packet has been accumulated, the appropriate header is inserted into the packet under the control of a routing processor, and the packet can then be sent as a group of adjacent PCM samples over a connection to the Internet. In other embodiments, information is sent to the Internet over a direct data pipe for transmitting ATM cells or Ethernet packets. A Vocoder signal processor can be inserted between the TSI memory, and the supplementary memory to convert PCM voice samples into vocoded voice samples for transmission over the Internet. A modem signal processor can be interposed between the TSI memory and the supplementary memory to convert between analog data (representing for example, shift key analog signals) and binary data for transmission within packets over the Internet.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1998Date of Patent: November 27, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Bohdan Lew Bodnar, James Patrick Dunn, Conrad Martin Herse, Enn Tammaru

Patent number: 6324280Abstract: A method and apparatus for selectively establishing a connection via a telephone network, or via the Internet. A network access switch decides whether to use the telephone network or the Internet. If connections are established using the Internet, the establishment of connection is controlled using existing CCS7 interoffice signaling messages. Advantageously, this permits most of the switching control software to be retained and allows the access switches to interface with the present array of operations support systems.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1998Date of Patent: November 27, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: James Patrick Dunn, Jack Kozik

Patent number: 6310878Abstract: A large router for routing datagrams. The large router comprises a plurality of router slices, each of which receives switches and transmits datagrams. Each router slice has a routing memory for routing the packets. If a packet is received whose destination address is not known to the receiving packet slice, the packet slice broadcasts a request for routing information for that datagram to the other packet slices of the large router and routes the packet in accordance with the received responses. Groups of slices are interconnected by a time slot interchange (TSI) unit, and groups of TSIs are interconnected by a time multiplexed switch. The router can consist of more than one switch; the switches being interconnected by high speed data links. Advantageously, the router, though composed of small slices, acts as if it were a single large high capacity entity.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1998Date of Patent: October 30, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Bohdan Lew Bodnar, James Patrick Dunn, Conrad Martin Herse, Enn Tammaru

Patent number: 6072793Abstract: An electronically controlled main distributing frame (ECMDF) establishes main distributing frame (MDF) type connection in response to control signals without requiring a craftsperson to connect a jumper wire. In accordance with one application of such ECMDF, a local switch can receive signals from a customer requesting connection to a specials service provider such as the Internet. In response to the receipt of such signals, the connection in the ECMDF is altered to provide a more direct connection to the service provider bypassing the local switch. Advantageously, such an arrangement allows the long holding times of Internet connections to be established through a bypass network while allowing the customers who have requested such a connection to be provided with normal telephone service when they are not on the Internet.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1997Date of Patent: June 6, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: James Patrick Dunn, William Brohmer Paulson, Carl Robert Posthuma, Dorothy Voytko Stanley

Patent number: 5905785Abstract: High usage lines in a telecommunications system must be detected to avoid local areas of high call blockage. Such high usage lines are frequently lines that originate or receive data calls. The presence of a data call is detected by testing for a signal, such as a tone, on the call connection after an answer signal has been detected, and testing to see if the duration of the call exceeds some predetermined quantity. Lines which originate or receive data calls exceeding the predetermined quantity are then monitored to measure their usage. Advantageously, many high usage lines can be detected by monitoring only the relatively few lines that originate or receive data calls.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1997Date of Patent: May 18, 1999Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: James Patrick Dunn, Don Howard Dvorak, Mark Alan Lassig

Patent number: 5883948Abstract: A method for automatically updating a central local number portability (LNP) database shared among a plurality of central office switches is instigated when a message from a provisioning system to add a directory number is received by a central office switch. In response to the message, a first central office switch accesses the central LNP database by sending a query message which contains the directory number to be added and routing data specific to the central office switch. Responsive to the query message, the LNP database searches for the directory number received from the first central office switch. If the directory number is found, the database queries a second central office switch to determine if the directory number is in use. If the number is in use, the central LNP database returns a failure message to the first central office switch.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1997Date of Patent: March 16, 1999Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: James Patrick Dunn

Patent number: 5841848Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method which screens all telephone call originations on an access system for calls to emergency services during times of telephone system congestion and bases a decision as to how to handle the call on such determination. According to this invention, all access system call originations (including dialed digits) are delivered to the switching system. If the access facilities are in an overload condition due to high volume or equipment failure, the switching system makes a predetermination as to whether the digits dialed indicate a call for emergency services (a 911 call) or a regular telephone call. Calls for emergency services are immediately routed. Regular telephone calls are advantageously routed to an announcement which announces traffic congestion and disconnects the call, thus providing access facilities for additional emergency calls.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1996Date of Patent: November 24, 1998Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: James Patrick Dunn

Patent number: 5673255Abstract: An unbundling apparatus to permit competitive access providers access to telephone lines connected to a remote terminal, and the ability to control and test such lines. Such unbundling apparatus includes a switch fabric, a command module, and a testing module. The switch fabric provides all voice channel connections between all switches and the remote terminal and grooms the control channels. Control messages are switched into the command module, which performs any protocol translations necessary. All commands from switches are then multiplexed and sent back to the switch fabric, which routes them to the original command channel to the remote terminal. Control messages from the remote terminal are demultiplexed, translated (if necessary) and sent to the switch fabric for delivery to the appropriate switch. Testing of lines is also provided to all competitive service providers.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1995Date of Patent: September 30, 1997Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: James Patrick Dunn, William Brohmer Paulson, Carl Robert Posthuma, Dorothy Voytko Stanley
