  • Patent number: 6292089
Abstract: A structure for temperature sensors and infrared detectors. The structure is built-up on a substrate that includes a thermistor layer, wherein the resistance of the thermistor layer is temperature dependent. The substrate also includes an electric contact layer on both sides of the thermistor layer, and the resistance of the thermistor layer is measured between the contact layers. The thermistor layer includes a monocrystalline quantum well structure that includes alternating quantum well layers and barrier layers. One or more of the bandedge energy of the barrier layers, the quantum well layer doping level, the quantum well layer thickness, and the barrier layer thickness is adapted to obtain a temperature coefficient predetermined for the structure.

  • Patent number: 5642728
Abstract: A method is provided for dispensing a clinically effective dose of an inhalable, pharmaceutically active compound. The method includes providing a dry powder inhaler containing a powder including the pharmaceutically active compound, and administering to a patient a dose of the compound that is less than 70% of the dose that would be necessary to obtain a physiologically equivalent result were the compound administered by a pressurized metered dose inhaler. The pharmaceutically active compound is in the form of primary particles at least 80% of which have a particle size of less than 10 microns, and the primary particles are provided as agglomerates which are deagglomerated during inhalation so that at least 40% of the dose administered is in the form of primary particles.

  • Patent number: 5590933
Abstract: A headrest support assembly (24) provides for a headrest frame (14) to be pivoted relative to a seatback (10) along a single pivot axis (28). The headrest (12) is adjustable into a plurality of support positions (30) and foldable into a non-support position (32) to enhance a driver's ability to see out the windows of a vehicle. The mechanism (60, 62) for adjusting the orientation of the headrest in the support position acts independently of the mechanism (47) for moving the headrest into the non-support position.

  • Patent number: 5446973
Abstract: A process and an apparatus for desorption, e.g. desorbing a solvent, from a bedding (4) of adsorbent material (14), e.g. activated carbon, by means of a hot gas flow, e.g. air, so that a wave of concentration induces, which goes through the bedding by means of the hot gas flow. The invention is characterized in that the concentration wave is controlled to reach the gas flow outlet of the bedding surface successively.

  • Patent number: 5258162
Abstract: A method of producing a gaseous, hydrogen peroxide-containing sterilization fluid displaying good, uniform sterilization properties is disclosed. The method includes vaporizing liquefied hydrogen peroxide by injecting the liquefied hydrogen peroxide intermittently in finely-divided form into an air current which serves as a vaporization agent, wherein the air current is kept at a constant or insignificantly varying elevated vaporization temperature. An even vaporization temperature of the air current is ensured because the air, prior to vaporization, is heated by heat exchange with a heating element having a large mass or thermal capacity and a large heat exchange surface area which is kept at the desired elevated temperature by regulated energy supplied to the heating element. During breaks in vaporization between the intermittent injection of the liquefied hydrogen peroxide, the heat exchange surface area is heated with the aid of heat stored in the heating element.

  • Patent number: 5240475
Abstract: Method and apparatus for separating one or more agents, specially solvents, from gases. The agent or the agents are adsorbed by an adsorbent and thereafter desorbed and separated in a condenser (18). The regeneration of the adsorbent includes two steps. In the first step the agent or the agents are separated from a part of the adsorbent by heating. In this way the concentration of the agent or the agents is increased in those parts of the adsorbent which are closest to the condenser. In a second step the remaining parts of the adsorbent are regenerated.

  • Patent number: 5229614
Abstract: A method for coupling radiation in an infrared detector of the kind which uses quantum wells that are comprised of thin layers of, e.g., gallium arsenide (GaAs) surrounded by aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs). The invention is characterized in that a two-dimensional crossed grating (6), a so-called 2-D grating, is constructed on the top of the detector mesa of the detector on the side opposite the surface through which incident light (5) enters the detector. The grating (6) is caused to spread the incident light in different directions. According to one preferred embodiment, the detector also includes a cladding layer (14) which, together with the crossed grating, forms a wave guide.
