  • Publication number: 20080096576
Abstract: Methods of providing power overload control in a communication system having a least one base station serving one or more users of at least one cell are described which may avoid an overload condition in the system. In one aspect, a target signal-to-interference ratio (SIRtarget) may be controlled for inner loop power control implemented by the base station, so as to maintain the loading of the communication system below an overload condition. In another aspect, a target block error rate (BLERtarget) may be controlled for outer loop power control implemented by the base station, so as to maintain the loading of communication system below an overload condition.

  • Patent number: 7317921
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for responding to changes in measurement of a system load in a spread spectrum communication system. Using a load control algorithm, for example, the spread spectrum communication system may handle sudden changes or variations, such as spikes or steps in system load measurements for an uplink and/or a downlink between a mobile unit and an access network. The load control algorithm determines whether a sudden variation of a measured system load is generated by a source not under a power control or is caused by a variation of a spread spectrum communication system load. A load control measure may be selectively applied to adjust one or more parameters associated with the system load.

  • Publication number: 20070281728
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed whereby noise is introduced at one or more base stations in non-HSDPA cells into the uplink signal from one or more user devices. As a result, the apparent quality of the uplink channel in those cells will appear to be lower than the actual quality of that channel. The power control commands issued from the base station to the user device will, therefore, reflect this lower estimated channel quality and, as a result, the user device will follow power control commands from the base station in the HSDPA cell. Therefore, the transmit power of the user device will remain adequate to communicate with the base station in the HSDPA cell and, as a result, the UL and DL in the HSDPA cell will remain synchronized.

  • Publication number: 20070253363
Abstract: A technique is disclosed for determining values of different portions of a total uplink interference, which can be used for scheduling and load control at a base station, for example. A disclosed example includes obtaining measurements from individual users and using those measurements to determine corresponding portions of a total uplink interference at the base station. One portion is associated with users that are controlled by a scheduler for that base station. Another portion is associated with users that are not controlled by that scheduler. Determining each of the portions individually and using a received total wideband power measurement allows for determining each of the major portions of the total uplink interference at a base station.

  • Patent number: 7190684
Abstract: The invention relates to packet transmission scheduling and specifically to UMTS packet transmission scheduling. It is an object of the invention to provide an improved method for packet transmission scheduling, especially on downlink shared channels and an improved packet transmission scheduling system, both the improved method and the system especially adapted to be used for UMTS systems. The invention proposes a quality of service scheduling of multiple data flows in a CDMA system, wherein a priority order of protocol data units (PDU) of multiple data flows with regard to predefined flow's quality of service requirements is determined and a serving of the protocol data units (PDU) is performed by dynamically creating transport block sets (TBS) to be transmitted to the physical layer (PHY-layer) with regard to the defined priority order and in dependence of allocated radio resource constraints.

  • Publication number: 20070049307
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system thereof for transmitting a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) packet over a primary channel and a supplemental channel belonging to a shared pool of supplemental channels in a wireless communications network such that Orthogonal Variable Spreading Factor (OVSF) codes associated with higher spreading factors (SF) may be used, thereby minimizing the adverse effects on system resources associated with implementing VoIP over downlink Dedicated CHannels (DCH). In the method and system, if an entire VoIP packet cannot be transmitted over a single transmission time interval on a primary channel, a specific supplemental channel (or code associated therewith) is assigned to a User Equipment (UE) to which the VoIP packet is intended. A portion of the VoIP packet is transmitted to the UE over a Dedicated Physical Data CHannel (DPDCH) on the primary channel, and another portion of the VoIP packet is transmitted to the UE over a DPDCH on the supplemental channel.

  • Publication number: 20070047489
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for performing handoffs in a wireless communications network which incorporates Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) using shared supplemental spreading codes. In this method and system, a mobile station is assigned a first and second primary code and a first and second set of supplemental codes. The first primary and set of supplemental codes are associated with a first base station. The second primary and set of supplemental codes are associated with a second base station and assigned to the mobile station when the mobile station is entering into a handoff state. The first and second set of supplemental codes belong to a pool of shared supplemental codes associated with the first and second base stations, respectively. A specific supplemental code is assigned from each of the first and second sets of supplemental codes when a complete packet cannot be transmitted over a single transmission time interval on the first and second primary channels.

Abstract: A new and significantly improved approach for controlling the transmission power in the uplink direction of a CDMA-based radio system is disclosed, which provides a transmission power control even with regard to an overall link quality substantially involving a real time reaction on changes in the environment. A CDMA-based radio system is described which comprises an inner power control loop for adjusting the transmission power between a user equipment and at least one base station based on the signal to interference ratio to ensure that the signal to interference ratio is similar to a target signal to interference ratio at least within a predefined range and an outer power control loop for adjusting the target signal to interference ratio based on the link quality to ensure a target link quality necessary for fulfilling a predetermined quality of service in view of link quality at least within a predefined range.
