  • Publication number: 20020154571
Abstract: A device for performing the manipulation of particles suspended in a fluid, comprises a chamber forming a duct for the flow of the fluid, and an acoustic transducer (10) and a reflector (12) for establishing an acoustic standing wave field across the width of the duct the spacing between the transducer and reflector is 300 microns or less. With such a small spacing, the device is particularly effective at concentrating the particles and lower operating voltages are required.

  • Patent number: 6332541
Abstract: An apparatus which manipulates particles suspended in a fluid includes a duct for the flow of the fluid in which the particles are suspended, and a mechanism for establishing an acoustic standing wave field across the width of the duct, the duct being formed with an expansion in width downstream of the standing wave field. In use, the particles in the fluid are displaced into a series of parallel bands by the acoustic standing wave field. The particles remain in these bands as the fluid flows downstream from the section in which the standing wave field is present. When the fluid reaches the expansion of the duct, the stream of fluid expands accordingly in width and, in so doing, the bands of particles are spread further apart, so increasing the spacing between adjacent bands. The bands can then be observed or separated from the duct.

  • Patent number: 6327630
Abstract: A complex computing system has a plurality of nodes interconnected by channels through which data messages are exchanged. The underlying principle is that after arrival at a node of a message, delivery of that message is delayed until after delivery and consequences of all more senior messages which affect the node. The messages are progressively timestamped at each node so that each time stamp contains generation by generation indicators of the origin of the associated message. The seniority of that message is uniquely determined thereby and total ordering of the messages can be achieved. When comparing timestamps for such ordering, comparison of respective generation indicators is necessary only until there is a distinction.

  • Patent number: 5870822
Abstract: A flip chip is soldered to an array of flexible pillars of compliant dielectric material on a circuit board. Each pillar has an electrically conductive core electrically coupled to the circuit board. The pillars absorb movement due to differences in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the chip and board, and hence reduce the possibility of fatigue failure of the solder joint. The pillars are manufactured by forming a layer of compliant dielectric material on the circuit board, forming blind holes in the layer, filling the holes with electrically conductive material overlapping the edges of the holes, and then laser ablating to remove the compliant dielectric material except where protected by the electrically conductive material.

  • Patent number: 5812051
Abstract: A vehicle security system comprises a transmitter 18 for transmitting coded signals, a receiver 16 for receiving the coded signals, and a control unit 14 for operating an engine immobilization system 12 in response to receipt by the receiver 16 of a valid coded signal. The transmitter 18 is arranged to transmit the coded signal as a sequence of pulses of electromagnetic radiation which are amplitude modulated at a modulating frequency, and the receiver includes an audio frequency filter arranged to pass signals having a frequency within a range including said modulating frequency. This allows the filtering out of high powered interfering signals which are of the same radio frequency as used in the system, but which are not modulated at the same audio frequency.

  • Patent number: 5712620
Abstract: A security system for detecting the fracture of a pane of glass of a motor vehicle comprising a fracture detector mechanisms in the form of a resilient sealing member. The resilient sealing member, which is normally in physical contact with the glass, has at least one sensor integrally formed therein by molding the at least one sensor into the resilient sealing member. The electrical state of the at least one each sensor, which is monitored by a control mechanism, is changed when the glass is fractured and, upon fracture, an appropriate warning device is energized by the control mechanism in response thereto. An anti-trap device may also be included in the resilient sealing member in order to detect the presence of foreign objects.
