Abstract: The present invention provides for a lamp assembly for use in automotive vehicles or similar illumination applications. The lamp assembly includes a number of light sources each utilized in conjunction with an optical element. The optical elements include a body of light transmitting material which further includes a top surface, a bottom surface, a front surface and a plurality of facets. The facets receive light through the front surface and reflect light through the top surface. The assembly further includes a manifold defined by the optical elements. When viewed in a direction toward the top surface, a majority of the optical elements have a common shape, preferably a pie wedge shape.

  • Patent number: 5779341
Abstract: The lighting system for an automotive vehicle has uses smooth conic section solids to form a beam pattern. In one aspect of the invention the A/C ratio of the conic section solids are varied to collimate the light emitted in the vertical direction and spread light in the horizontal direction. In another aspect of the invention the A/C ratio of a hyperbolic conic section may remain the same while adding fluting to the outer surface of the lens to provide beam redirection.

  • Patent number: 5681104
Abstract: Headlamp system for an automotive vehicle has an individual lamp for illuminating a high intensity zone and a spread zone of an image surface. The system includes a first light source having a substantially elliptical reflector for directing light to a spread light zone on an image surface and a second light source having a filament mounted in an axial direction to the length. A second reflector has a generally elliptical shape, a first focus, a second focus and a magnification. The second reflector directs light to a high intensity zone on the image surface. A light shield having a generally planar surface is mounted substantially normal to the longitudinal axis substantially at the second focus. An aspheric lens having an aperture having a width is located between the shield and image surface. The maximum magnification of the filament at the aspheric lens is substantially the width of the aperture.

  • Patent number: 5539629
Abstract: A multi-faceted light reflector has a reflecting surface with a plurality of adjacent facets, a light source placed in a predetermined spatial relationship to the reflecting surface, and an image surface placed in a predetermined spatial relationship to the light source and the reflecting surface. At least one of said facets has a differentially tilted parabolic cross section. The differentially tilted parabolic facet has a continuous and smooth surface with a focal axis having an angle of inclination with respect to the horizontal image surface that changes along the length of the facet.

  • Patent number: 5471371
Abstract: An illuminator for use with a light source having a light distribution pattern within a solid angle of 2.pi. steradians. The light source comprises or includes a series of LED's or light pipes positioned at or near a focal point of a reflective surface and inclined at an angle to a focal axis of the reflective surface such that all of the light from the light source is collected and distributed by the reflective surface. Whereby the reflective surface is optimized to confine the light output only to the required photometric zones thus maximizing the efficiency of the illuminator.

  • Patent number: 5406462
Abstract: An apparatus includes a reflective surface for high efficiency collection, transmission and emission of light. Light collected by an ellipsoidal and hyperboloidal portion of the reflective surface is directed into a light guide. Additionally, a paraboloidal portion may be added and used in combination with a lens element to distribute the light reflected by the reflective surface in a beam pattern. When used as an emitter lens profile is smaller than the overall diameter of the reflective surface. When used as a collector, the reflective surface receives and concentrates light onto the end of a light pipe.
