  • Patent number: 7061714
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, a head, and a voice coil motor (VCM) for actuating the head over the disk. The disk drive executes a rotational position optimization (RPO) algorithm to select a next command to execute relative to an estimated seek time computed for each command in a command queue. A seek time parameter is estimated and a seek time delta computed in response to the estimated seek time parameter. The seek time delta is added to a nominal estimated seek time to generate a modified estimated seek time for each command in the command queue, thereby optimizing the RPO algorithm.

  • Patent number: 7054098
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, an actuator arm, a head connected to a distal end of the actuator arm, and a voice coil motor (VCM) for rotating the actuator arm about a pivot to actuate the head over the disk, wherein the VCM rotates the actuator arm into a latched positioned when the disk drive is idle. Disk drive control circuitry unlatches the actuator arm by applying a driving current to the VCM according to an open-loop current profile. The open-loop current profile comprises an acceleration pulse having an acceleration magnitude and an acceleration interval, and a deceleration pulse having a deceleration magnitude and a deceleration interval. The deceleration magnitude is substantially smaller than the acceleration magnitude, and the deceleration interval is substantially longer than the acceleration interval, to thereby attenuate acoustic noise when unlatching the actuator arm.

  • Patent number: 7050254
Abstract: Disclosed is a disk drive that provides for internal disk drive temperature estimation. The disk drive includes an actuator, a head attached to the actuator, a disk to store data, a preamplifier connected to the head to amplify read and write signals, and a processor for controlling operations in the disk drive including moving the actuator such that the head is moved to read data from and write data to the disk. The processor under the control of a program is further utilized to calculate a junction temperature (JTemp) based on a breakthrough voltage of the preamplifier, apply a filter to the calculated JTemp to compensate for temperature noise, and to estimate an internal disk drive temperature based upon the filtered JTemp.

  • Patent number: 6987639
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, a head, and a voice coil motor (VCM) for actuating the head over the disk. The disk drive executes a rotational position optimization (RPO) algorithm to select a next command to execute relative to an estimated seek time computed for each command in a command queue. A motor capability of the VCM is estimated and used to modify the estimated seek time for each command in the command queue to thereby optimize the RPO algorithm.

  • Publication number: 20040247616
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the cloning, sequencing and expression of homologous immunoreactive 28-kDa protein genes, p28-1, -2, -3, -5, -6, -7, -9, from a polymorphic multiple gene family of Ehrlichia canis. Further disclosed is a multigene locus encoding all nine homologous 28-kDa protein genes of Ehrlichia canis. Recombinant Ehrlichia canis 28-kDa proteins react with convalescent phase antiserum from an E. canis-infected dog, and may be useful in the development of vaccines and serodiagnostics that are particularly effective for disease prevention and serodiagnosis.

  • Publication number: 20040231495
Abstract: A digital music conversion device for converting digital music files in a first format into ones in a second format. The converted digital music files are stored in a portable recording medium. Using the disclosed conversion device, a digital music file in the first format that occupies a larger storage space is converted into one that occupies less space. Therefore, the latter can be stored in a portable storage medium. In comparison with the prior art, the invention does not need a computer to perform file format conversions and has simpler operations.

  • Publication number: 20030158383
Abstract: The 28-kDa outer membrane proteins (P28) of Ehrlichia chaffeensis are encoded by a multigene family consisting of 21 members located in a 23-kb DNA fragment in the genome of E. chaffeensis. Fifteen of these proteins are claimed herein as novel sequences. The amino acid sequence identity of the various P28 proteins was 20-83%. Six of 10 tested p28 genes were actively transcribed in cell culture grown E. chaffeensis. RT-PCR also indicated that each of the p28 genes was monocistronic. These results suggest that the p28 genes are active genes and encode polymorphic forms of the P28 proteins. The P28s were also divergent among different isolates of E. chaffeensis. The large repertoire of the p28 genes in a single ehrlichial organism and antigenic diversity of the P28 among the isolates of E. chaffeensis suggest that the P28s may be involved in immune avoidance.
