  • Publication number: 20030048715
Abstract: An optical pickup apparatus that can adaptive for a plurality types of optical discs different in the layout condition such as a recording density, etc. and an optical recording/reproducing apparatus employing the optical pickup apparatus. In the optical pickup apparatus, first and second light sources generate a different wavelength of light beams. An optical system allows a light beam generated from any one of the first and second light sources to be selectively irradiated onto the optical disc and have an aperture number controller allowing the number of aperture of a light beam to have a different value. A photo detector detects the light beam reflected from the optical disc to be accessed to convert the same into an electrical signal. The apparatus is capable of accessing three types of optical discs different in the layout condition by utilizing an appropriate combination of a wavelength of the light beam with the number of aperture.

  • Publication number: 20030007449
Abstract: The present invention relates to a high-density disk that is structured to prevent a collision of an optical pickup's objective lens with the high-density disk if the disk is placed upside down in a disk device that is able to record and reproduce signals to/from the high-density disk. A high-density disk recording medium according to the present invention has a reflecting thin film or label, formed on a surface opposite to a recording surface, to block a beam incident to an inserted disk not to travel up to a lead-in area, which a disk device tries to read first when a disk is placed, in the event that the inserted disk has been misplaced upside down.

  • Patent number: 6497096
Abstract: An automatic transmission for automobiles is disclosed. In the automatic transmission, a housing (1) is filled with transmission fluid. A pump (2), having an input shaft (6), is positioned at one side within the housing (1), while a turbine (3), having an output shaft (7), is positioned at the other side within the housing (1) while being opposed to the pump (2). Pluralities of turbine blades (3a), regularly arranged around the turbine (3), are changeable in their inclination angles relative to the axis of the output shaft (7) so as to allow the rotating speed to be changeable. A hydraulic pressure control unit controls the inflow and out flow of the transmission fluid for the housing (1) while controlling the hydraulic pressure within the housing. An air control valve (5) controls the inflow and outflow of air relative to the housing (1) in response to the inflow and outflow of the transmission fluid relative to the housing (1).

  • Publication number: 20020136338
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of inserting sync patterns of different lengths in modulated data, and a recording medium having sync patterns produced by said method. The sector sync and the frame sync pattern to be inserted in modulated data in accordance with the present invention must satisfy the given (d, k) constraints, have distinctive 0's run the modulated channel data can not have, and be as short as it can. In addition, the frame sync pattern is shorter than the sector sync pattern because the frame sync pattern is more frequently inserted than the sector one. Owing to the present sync patterns, the storage capacity reduction of a recording medium due to necessary insertion of sync patterns can be minimized under a given modulation condition.

  • Publication number: 20020126597
Abstract: A read-only recording medium and a reproducing method thereof ensures reproduction compatibility with a rewritable recording medium in which real data is recorded with substantial discontinuity. The read-only recording medium comprises a data recording area in which real data is stored; and a plurality of waste areas allocated at intervals in the data recording area. The method of reproducing data stored in a read-only recording medium reproduces data from the read-only recording medium, skips if a waste area is encountered or removes invalid data reproduced from the waste area wherein each waste area has been inserted periodically in the read-only recording medium, and outputs the data reproduced before and behind each waste area in succession. As a result, the playability is improved in a disk device capable of reproducing both a read-only and a rewritable recording medium.

  • Patent number: 6407974
Abstract: An optical pick-up apparatus capable of reducing an aberration having a simplified configuration of optical elements. The optical pick-up apparatus employees a dichroic optical element for forcing first and second light beams from first and second light sources to enter toward an objective lens along an identified path. The dichroic optical element compensates the aberration. As a result, the aberration of the optical pick-up apparatus is optimized.

  • Patent number: 6379767
Abstract: An optical recording medium with a number of recording layers that is adaptive for enhancing a light efficiency and for improving a responsibility of information and a recording capacity. In the optical recording medium, at least one of recording layers in the number of recording layers are formed of a material having a non-linear optical characteristic. The recording layer made from the non-linear optical characteristic material has a higher reflective coefficient as a light intensity becomes stronger, thereby improving a light efficiency when a recording layer far away from the light source is accessed. Also, the recording layer made from the non-linear optical characteristic allows an effective diameter of a light spot to be reduced, thereby enlarging a recording capacity of the optical recording medium.

  • Publication number: 20020008646
Abstract: The present invention relates to method and apparatus of converting a series of data words into modulated signals. This ethod generates for each data word a number of intermediate sequences by combining mutually different digital words with that data word, scrambles these intermediate sequences to form alternative sequences, translates each alternative sequence into a (d,k) constrained sequence, checks whether each (d,k) constrained sequence contains undesired sub-sequence of more than kSET “0”s where kSET is smaller than k, and selects one (d,k) constrained sequence for recording on an optical or magneto-optical recording medium among the (d,k) constrained sequences not having the undesired sub-sequence, thereby recording edge information more frequently which will result in stable clock while conducting DSV control normally.

  • Publication number: 20020006166
Abstract: The present invention relates to method and apparatus of converting a series of data words into modulated signals. This method divides a data word, which a sync signal is to be added in front or rear of when it is written in a recording medium, into two or more word segments, generates for each word segment a number of intermediate sequences by combining mutually different digital words with that word segment, scrambles these intermediate sequences to form alternative sequences, translates each alternative sequence into a (d, k) constrained sequence, checks how many undesired sub-sequences are contained in each (d, k) constrained sequence, and selects one (d, k) constrained sequence for recording on an optical or magneto-optical recording medium among the (d, k) constrained sequences not having the undesired sub-sequence. Applying this method to a modulating device, DSV control can be conducted by much simpler hardware.
