  • Publication number: 20130148079
Abstract: Systems and methods for polishing a lens having a freeform design cut into a surface of the lens are provided. The system may include a lap blank having a substantial inverse of the freeform design cut into a surface of the lap blank, or a conformable lap blank having an inverse of the freeform design molded into a surface of the lap blank. The system also includes a deformable pad mounted on the surface of the lap blank. The surface of the lens is separated from the surface of the lap blank by the deformable pad, and the lens and the lap blank are arranged such that the freeform design of the surface of the lens is substantially aligned with the substantial inverse of the freeform design of the surface of the lap blank.

  • Publication number: 20130126666
Abstract: Flying Car, readable aircraft, amphibian, multimode, multifunctional, composite versatile personal transport vehicle with twin, parallel fuselages, hulls, each with inflatable pontoons and/or wheels below and a cabin. Combined, aircraft, airplane, aeroplane, flying, air, aerial, airborne vehicle with variable, folding wings which is convertible via automatic transformation to a land vehicle and to a sea vessel. Two wings are stored between the fuselages. They extend on a system of rails, pivots and counter-rotating, fuselage-mounted arms which then sink flush into the wings' undersides and lock for flight. Upon wing extension and retraction, controls for road transport and flight controls alternately emerge or are stowed inoperably, as needed. Engine power alternately drives a propeller for flight, wheels for road travel and a separate, submersible, marine propeller for water transport.

  • Publication number: 20130020419
Abstract: A milling apparatus in which at least two independently driven axiaily mounted elements are eccentrically mounted one within the other so as to define a processing chamber (12) therebetween with the minimum radial gap between the elements at one position being diametrically opposite to the maximum radial gap. Stresses are applied to the material by passing it through the minimum radial gap, which is adjustable. The elements may be rotated in the same direction to apply compressive and extensional stresses to material within the minimum gap, or in opposite directions to apply shear stresses to the material within this gap. A third element may be incorporated within the chamber to provide heat transfer and distributive mixing to the stressed material.

  • Patent number: 8306189
Abstract: X-ray apparatus comprises a linear accelerator adapted to produce a beam of electrons at one of at least two selectable energies and being controlled to change the selected energy on a periodic basis, and a target to which the beam is directed thereby to produce a beam of x-radiation, the target being non-homogenous and being driven to move periodically in synchrony with the change of the selected energy. In this way, the target can move so that a different part is exposed to the electron beam when different pulses arrive. This enables the appropriate target material to be employed depending on the selected energy. The easiest form of periodic movement for the target is likely to be a rotational movement.

  • Publication number: 20120271087
Abstract: The oligomerization of ethylene using a chromium catalyst and an aluminoxane activator is well known. The undesired formation of polyethylene as a by-product is also known to occur during prior oligomerization processes. We have discovered that the use of an aluminoxane that is prepared by non-hydrolytic means provides a highly productive activator (co-catalyst) for ethylene oligomerization and mitigates the undesired formation of by-product polyethylene.

  • Publication number: 20120263536
Abstract: A standoff system for keeping a containment boom or other floating barrier device spaced at a desired standoff distance away from a structure. The system includes an inner side member, an outer side member, and a plurality of compression members disposed between the side members. The system has a collapsed configuration in which the distance between the inner and outer side members is less than the desired standoff distance, and a deployed configuration in which the distance between the side members is greater than or substantially equal to the desired standoff distance. Alternatively, the system can be collapsed longitudinally by moving the adjacent compression members into abutting relationship with each other. The system is towed into place in the collapsed configuration, and once in place, is transformed into the deployed configuration by applying tension to the side members.

  • Patent number: 8256182
Abstract: A free-standing wall includes concrete base blocks adjacent to each other forming a base course; a first set of concrete wall blocks stacked on the base course and on each other to form a first wall face; and a second set of concrete wall blocks stacked on the base course and on each other to form a second wall face that faces the opposite direction from the first wall face and that has the same number of courses as the first plurality of wall blocks. Methods of constructing the wall arrangement include laying the base blocks next to each other end to end; stacking individual blocks of a first set of blocks on the base course and then on each other to form a first wall face; stacking individual blocks of the second set of blocks on the base course and then on each other to form a second wall face that faces a direction opposite of the first wall face.

  • Publication number: 20120142989
Abstract: The oligomerization of ethylene using a chromium catalyst having a heteroatomic ligand may be used to provide oligomerization products that are selective towards hexene and/or octene. However, such processes also typically produce some polymer as an undesirable by product. The present invention is directed towards improvements in the selective oligomerization of ethylene.

  • Publication number: 20120127826
Abstract: The invention provides a distributive and dispersive mixing apparatus of the CDDM or CTM type comprising two spaced-apart mutually rotatable confronting surfaces (1, 2) having cavities (3) therein. The surfaces have preferably relatively widely-spaced, axially-disposed confronting surfaces which alternate with preferably relatively narrowly-spaced, radially-disposed confronting surfaces, thereby preventing any leakage flow through the mixer and allowing expansion during operation with reduced danger of contact of the radially-disposed confronting surfaces.
