  • Patent number: 8152105
Abstract: A parachute packing system for facilitating insertion of a parachute canopy into a deployment receptacle or parachute receptacle includes an adjustable spring-like cylindrical sleeve that conforms to a “C”-shaped cross section, the sleeve member having rounded edges to prevent snagging of parachute material, and a gap defining a line passage slot within the cylindrical sleeve for passage of parachute suspension lines and bridle, and a pair of opposing deployment receptacle attachment points or knobs affixed to the outer surface of the cylindrical sleeve. Preferably, at least one of the receptacle attachment points or knobs engages a slotted track for sliding adjustment thereof, and a mechanism for reversibly locking the receptacle attachment point or knob within the slotted track. Optionally, the cylindrical sleeve includes an integral mat attachment hook, which runs across the bottom of the sleeve opening, for attachment to a packing mat made of non-slip rubberized material.

  • Publication number: 20120065801
Abstract: A method and system for controlling a building load in tandem with a replenishable energy source includes generating a control signal comprising at least one of a source command and a sink command. The control signal is transmitted over a communications network to a replenishable energy storage controller. Next, a capacity of the replenishable energy source is determined in response to the control signal. Then a capacity of the building load is determined in relation to the capacity of the replenishable energy source. After this determination, the building load is used as one of a source for supplying energy and a sink for receiving energy in response to the control signal. The replenishable energy source may also be used as a source for supplying energy or a sink for receiving energy in response to the command signal.

  • Patent number: 8106627
Abstract: A method and system provide for the cooperative charging of electric vehicles. By using power line communications, chargers of the electric vehicles who are serviced by the same distribution transformer can form self-contained local area networks due to the nature of power line communications. After the chargers of the electric vehicles are coupled to one another through power line communications, they can form a token ring network. According to this token ring network, a predetermined number of tokens can be assigned within the token ring network for permitting chargers with tokens to charge respective electric vehicles while chargers without tokens must wait until they receive a token to initiate charging.

  • Patent number: 7960985
Abstract: An apparatus in an example comprises an integrated circuit and one or more resistors. The integrated circuit comprises an internal current source and an external interface pin. The one or more resistors arc external to the integrated circuit and coupled with the external interface pin of the integrated circuit. Application of current from the internal current source of the integrated circuit to the one or more resistors through the external interface pin serves to generate a voltage that is employed to identify the integrated circuit.

  • Publication number: 20110109266
Abstract: A method and system provide for the cooperative charging of electric vehicles. By using power line communications, chargers of the electric vehicles who are serviced by the same distribution transformer can form self-contained local area networks due to the nature of power line communications (PLCs). Alternatively, or in addition to the PLCs, other communication networks, such as the Internet and local area networks, may be used as part of the communications infrastructure for the chargers. After the chargers of the electric vehicles are coupled to one another through power line communications or traditional communications networks, they can form a logical token ring network. According to this token ring network, a predetermined number of tokens can be assigned within the token ring network for permitting chargers with tokens to charge respective electric vehicles while chargers without tokens must wait until they receive a token to initiate charging.

  • Publication number: 20110044749
Abstract: An apparatus that can be used for the containment and application of liquid materials, such as liquid cosmetic materials is disclosed. The applicator can have a first layer and a second layer disposed beneath the first layer. The first and second layer of the applicator can be constructed of a fibrous material, such as a nonwoven fibrous material. Each of the layers of fibrous materials can have a particular specific gravity and porosity that allow for the retention of the liquid material in the second layer as well as the passage of the liquid through the first layer when the first layer and the second layer are compressed. In other embodiments, the apparatus may comprise a reservoir layer constructed of a non-woven fibrous material. Liquid material retained in the reservoir is forced from the reservoir when the reservoir is compressed.

  • Publication number: 20070265220
Abstract: The invention is directed to compositions and methods for selectively reducing the expression of a gene product from a desired target gene in a cell, as well as for treating diseases caused by the expression of the gene. More particularly, the invention is directed to compositions that contain double stranded RNA (“dsRNA”), and methods for preparing them, that are capable of reducing the expression of target genes in eukaryotic cells. The dsRNA has a first oligonucleotide sequence that is between 25 and about 30 nucleotides in length and a second oligonucleotide sequence that anneals to the first sequence under biological conditions. In addition, a region of one of the sequences of the dsRNA having a sequence length of at least 19 nucleotides is sufficiently complementary to a nucleotide sequence of the RNA produced from the target gene to trigger the destruction of the target RNA by the RNAi machinery.

  • Publication number: 20070231907
Abstract: The invention provides methods for methylating a gene of interest in a cell. The methods include exposing a mammalian cell to an siRNA molecule which is specific for a gene of interest in the cell. The methods also include introducing into the cell DNA sequences encoding a sense strand and an antisense strand of an siRNA which is specific for the gene of interest. • Publication number: 20070131787
Abstract: A system for communicating across conventional HVAC wiring is provided. The system includes a communication device having a communication module capable of inducing low power, high frequency current signals into a single control wire coupling, for example, a thermostat with a compressor. The communication module includes a power supply module that draws power sufficient to operate the communication module from the existing HVAC wiring, so as to eliminate any need for batteries or external power sources. A second communication module may be coupled to the single control wire. The second communication module operates as a transceiver sending communication signals to, and receiving communication signals from, the communication module. In one embodiment, the communication module is disposed within a building, for example coupled to an electronic thermostat, while the second communication module is disposed outside the building near the compressor.

  • Publication number: 20070129851
Abstract: A method and system for shedding loads based upon a power system characteristic, such as voltage or frequency, is provided. In one embodiment, a remote party, such as a power generator or utility, transmits a signal to a control device proximately located with a load device. Upon receipt of the signal, the control device measures the power system characteristic for a predetermined time to establish a baseline threshold. The control device then monitors the power system characteristic. When the power system characteristic falls outside the baseline threshold, the control device sheds load. In one embodiment, the loads are prioritized such that the load of least importance may be shed first.

  • Publication number: 20070054259
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the discovery that the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleprotein H (hnRNP H) is capable of binding mutant myotonic dystrophy (DM) protein kinase (DMPK) mRNA. The present invention is also directed to the discovery that modulation of the expression of hnRNP H results in reduced nuclear retention of the mutant DMPK mRNA. The present invention is further directed to screening compounds to identify drugs useful for treating DM type 1 (DM1).

  • Publication number: 20070036773
Abstract: The present invention is directed to universal T cells and their use in treating diseases and other physiological conditions. More specifically, the present invention is directed to universal T cells and their use in treating treating B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) in particular and malignancy in general. The universal T cells contain (i) nucleic acid encoding a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) to redirect their antigen specificity and effector function and (ii) nucleic acids encoding shRNA and/or siRNA molecules to down-regulate cell-surface expression of T cell classical HLA class I and/or II genes to avoid recognition by recipient T cells. The universal T cells may also contain a nucleic acid encoding a non-classical HLA gene, such as an HLA E gene to enforce expression of HLA E genes and/or an HLA G gene to enforce expression of HLA G genes, to avoid recognition by recipient NK cells. The universal T cells may further contain a nucleic acid encoding a selection-suicide gene.
