Publication number: 20040076145Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and system for establishing a connection to a terminal device, wherein a user capability information defining supported types of information streams is set in a compatibility information element within an outband signaling message, and a capability negotiation is performed by transmitting said outband signaling message via an outband control channel. The code or user capability information may be set at the terminal device or at an intermediate network element based on a subscriber profile information obtained from a subscriber database. Thereby, the user capability, such as a multimedia session composition, can be already negotiated or handled during the outband call setup phase, and a corresponding inband negotiation can be avoided.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 10, 2003Publication date: April 22, 2004Inventors: Timo Kauhanen, Juha Rasanen, Mark Lybeck

Patent number: 6721304Abstract: A channel configuration of a digital mobile communications system comprises two or more lower-rate transmission channels for each high-speed radio interface traffic channel between a base station and an interworking function. Radio frames, such as EDGE frames, are transmitted over a radio interface traffic channel. Transmission frames, such as TRAU frames, are transmitted on a transmission channels. The base station and the interworking function provide the transmission frames to be transmitted with frame and/or channel numbering which indicates the order of the transmitted frames and/or the transmission channel via which the transmission frame was transmitted. According to the invention, the base station does not restore the order of the downlink transmission frames on the basis of said frame and/or channel numbering but it places the data of the transmission frames and at least the frame and/or channel numbering in the payload of the downlink radio frame to be transmitted.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2000Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: Nokia Networks OyInventor: Juha Rasanen

Patent number: 6678527Abstract: One common traffic channel is allocated to a multiservice call which requires simultaneous transmission of two or more different information flows apart from one another. This common traffic channel is divided into a transparent and a non-transparent sub-channel. The transmitting end is provided with a multiplexer (73) which multiplexes the different information flows (75, 76) to the common traffic channel. The receiving end is provided with a demultiplexer (74) which demultiplexes the signal received from the common traffic channel back into separate information flows (75, 76). The transparent sub-channel is used for transmitting time-critical information, such as video and audio, which does not allow the use of an error correction protocol based on retransmission, and the non-transparent sub-channel can be used for transmitting less time-critical information, such as data files, which allows the use of error correction based on retransmission.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2000Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Assignee: Nokia Networks OyInventor: Juha Rasanen

Patent number: 6674741Abstract: The invention relates to high speed data transmission in digital mobile communication systems. In multichannel data transmission, a single data connection is allocated a plurality of parallel traffic channels (Ch1, Ch2, Ch3) via which the data units (1, 2, . . . , n) are transferred. At the transmitter (Tx), the data units are provided with a numbering by means of which the receiver (Rx) is able to restore the transmission sequence of the data units received via the different traffic channels. If the length of the data units varies to a great extent or is small in relation to the transmission delay tolerance of the traffic channels, the number space of the data units must be large for the receiver to be able to restore the data unit sequence. An increase in the number of numbering bits signifies a lower efficiency for the transfer. In at least embodiment of the invention, short data units are concatenated in data blocks (I and II) each of which is transmitted as an entity via the traffic channel.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1998Date of Patent: January 6, 2004Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventor: Juha Räsänen

Patent number: 6665312Abstract: The invention relates to a synchronous data transmission when the maximum data rate of the traffic channel equals one of the user data rates at the terminal interface. Such a situation may occur for example when a satellite system is connected as a base station system to a mobile system. A mobile station (MS) inserts the terminal interface status information (STATUS) in the redundant parts (REDUNDANT) of the protocol data units (PDU) of the transmission protocol used at the terminal interface and transmits the protocol units through a satellite traffic channel to a land earth station (LES). The land earth station (LES) is arranged to extract said status information from the protocol data units and to restore the original redundancy to the protocol data units.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1998Date of Patent: December 16, 2003Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventor: Juha Räsänen

Patent number: 6646998Abstract: The present invention generally relates to data transmission services in mobile communication systems. A mobile subscriber may typically be entitled to different kinds of tele and bearer services. Presently, each user data rate is an independent bearer service. This means that there is a vast number of bearer services, which causes problems for both the network operators and the mobile subscribers. According to the invention, the number of bearer services is reduced by defining the bearer service to cover several data rates, and by negotiating, at the call set-up stage, the data rate to be used by the data call in the bearer service between the mobile station (MS) and the mobile communication network (MSC). The next step is to negotiate the data rate between the mobile communication network (MSC) and the fixed network, such as PSTN or ISDN. Then, if required, the data rate of the mobile communication network and the radio channel resources are adapted to the data rate used towards the fixed network.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 1998Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventor: Juha Räsänen

Patent number: 6647006Abstract: A channel configuration of a digital mobile system comprises two or more lower-rate transmission channels for each high-speed radio interface traffic channel at the network interface between a base station and an interworking function. Radio frames, such as EDGE frames, are transferred on a radio interface traffic channel. Transmission frames, such as TRAU frames, are transferred on transmission channels. The total data rate at the network interface is greater than the data rate at the radio interface. According to the invention, the total data rates of the network interface and the radio interface are rate-adapted by transferring fill data in transmission frames in addition to payload between the base station and the interworking function, such that the average data rate of the payload at the network interface corresponds to the total data rate at the radio interface, and the combined total data rate of the fill data and the payload corresponds to the total data rate at the network interface.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2000Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Nokia Networks OyInventor: Juha Räsänen

Patent number: 6594486Abstract: The invention relates to radio systems and particularly to non-transparent data transmission in a mobile communication system where a mobile services switching center and a radio access network belong to different system generations. A second-generation mobile services switching center is also provided with a protocol unit supporting a radio link protocol of a third-generation radio access network. In such a case the radio link protocol is set up between the mobile station and the mobile services switching center without a radio link protocol conversion in an interworking unit of the radio access network. The radio access network merely transmits the radio link protocol transparently between the mobile station and the mobile services switching center, i.e. it extends the protocol to the mobile services switching center.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2000Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventor: Juha Räsänen

Publication number: 20030096627Abstract: A method in a communication system is disclosed. In the method a procedure for setting up a communication link between a first user equipment and a second user equipment via a communications network is initiated. Information regarding at least two modes of communication that can be used for communication via the communication link is signalled between the first and second user equipment. An indicator regarding a mode to be used for the communication is also signalled between the first user equipment and the second user equipment. After the signalling steps, a procedure for setting the mode of communication in accordance with the indicator is initiated in at least in one of the user equipment. According to an alternative embodiment signalling for reserving a possibility for at least tow different communication modes occurs between elements of the communication system.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2002Publication date: May 22, 2003Inventors: Juha Rasanen, Juha Back, Juha Kallio, Seppo Kallio, Juha Lindfors, Juha Oravainen

Patent number: 6563789Abstract: The invention relates to a data transmission method and equipment in a telecommunication system, particularly in a situation where the maximum data rate of a traffic channel is equal to one user data rate at a terminal interface. A mobile station inserts terminal interface status information in redundant parts of redundant user data elements of an end-to-end transmission protocol and sends them through the traffic channel without that the status information raises the data rate. If no user data elements are received at the terminal interface, auxiliary frames, in which the terminal interface status information can be transmitted, are generated. A mobile services switching centre separates the terminal interface status information from the redundant data elements or auxiliary frames at the receiving end.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1999Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventor: Juha Räsänen

Patent number: 6556550Abstract: The invention relates to a mobile system in which the radio interface rate of a traffic channel and the intermediate rate of a transmission channel restrict the number of bits available for the transmission of terminal interface statuses (S), network independent clocking (N) and subchannel numbering (#) of a multichannel data link. In the invention, the bits form a subframe (n, . . . , n+10) and the status and control information are multiplexed inside successive subframes in a superframe structure (SUPERFRAME). In other words, the capacity of the bits available for the control information is shared by various kinds of control information by means of the superframe structure.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1999Date of Patent: April 29, 2003Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventor: Juha Räsänen

Patent number: 6529572Abstract: The invention relates to a method and equipment for network independent clocking in a telecommunication system, particularly in data transmission where the maximum data rate on a traffic channel is equal to the user data rate. In the invention a transmitter compares the network independent clock and the network clock to detect a slip and, upon detecting a slip, performs compensation of the network independent clock by changing the number of the redundant bits in user data. The user data is transmitted through a traffic channel to a receiver. The receiver, upon detecting the network independent clock compensation in the received user data, restores the original redundancy and temporarily adjusts the network independent clock so as to compensate for the change caused by the restoration of the redundancy in the outbound user data stream.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1999Date of Patent: March 4, 2003Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventor: Juha Räsänen

Publication number: 20020126317Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting a facsimile message via a communication network is described, wherein the facsimile message is at least partly transmitted to the called party using an agreed file transfer protocol. When a negotiating step was not successful, the facsimile message is transmitted using a normal facsimile protocol. Thus, the use of file transfer protocol is allowed as a means for transferring facsimile message data, such that a facsimile transmission via packet-switched networks like the Internet can be provided. With modem types other than those defined especially for facsimile use, the date transfer speed is remarkably higher, such that lower transmission costs can be achieved.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 26, 2001Publication date: September 12, 2002Inventors: Mikko Ohvo, Juha Rasanen, Markku Tuomi

Publication number: 20020093914Abstract: The present invention discloses a network system, in which data is transmitted in the form of transmission frames, the system including a network control unit (4) for controlling communication in the network and a terminal (2) for receiving and transmitting data from/to the network control unit (4). When the network control unit (4) receives a request for changing from a first user data rate to a second user data rate it adds/deletes fill data (FD) to/from a transmission frame corresponding to the requested change in the user data rate for transmitting data to the terminal (2) at the second user data rate. The terminal (2) detects the change in the amount of fill data (FD) and changes the user data rate transmitted to the network control unit (4) according to the detected change. In this system, it is possible to smoothly change the data rate without affecting the quality of service.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2001Publication date: July 18, 2002Inventors: Juha Rasanen, Mikko Ohvo
