  • Publication number: 20040042491
Abstract: A method for acknowledged transmission of data packets in a telecommunications system, comprising a convergence protocol layer for creating convergence protocol packets, and a link layer for transmitting convergence protocol packets and for acknowledging the transmission. A data packet number is defined for the convergence protocol packets by means of counters of the transmitter and the receiver which are synchronized with each other, in which case the transmitted convergence protocol packets are acknowledged by means of said counters. After reconfiguration of a radio bearer, the counters are synchronized by comparing the values of respective counters, and if the value of the transmitter's counter is smaller than the value of the receiver's counter, a temporary counter is started for the receiver. The value of the transmitter's counter is set as the value of the temporary counter, and the temporary counter is used until its value reaches a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 6618591
Abstract: A link between a mobile station operating within a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) is checked either at the mobile station itself or within a Radio Network Controller (RNC) of the UMTS to determine an error rate greater than a threshold. If found to be operating at greater than the error rate threshold, the bitrate of the link is reduced. If more than one PDP context is present then the PDP contexts can be reduced one at a time, according to selected criteria, until the error rate is reduced below the threshold. Once the interference is reduced to a level that will support the services at their former level, the mobile station can once again begin freely operating at a bitrate between the minimum guaranteed bitrate and a maximum bitrate, commencing randomly if under the control of the mobile station, or according to a timed sequence if controlled from the RAN.

  • Publication number: 20030165161
Abstract: A method for acknowledged transmission of data packets in a packet-switched telecommunications system. A data packet number is defined for the convergence protocol packets to be transmitted by means of sending and receiving counters which are synchronized with each other, in which case the transmitted convergence protocol packets are acknowledged with the counter values. Convergence protocol packets containing only user data are used in the data transmission between the sender and the receiver. If the counters become asynchronous, convergence protocol packets containing a packet data number are sent, and the number of these convergence protocol packets is indicated to the receiver. The counters are synchronized on the basis of the data packet numbers of the convergence protocol packets. After the number of convergence protocol packets with a data packet number have been sent, transmission of convergence protocol packets containing only user data is continued.

  • Patent number: 6590905
Abstract: An implementation of packet data control protocol (PDCP) parameter negotiation in a universal mobile telephone communications service (UMTS) which can also be used to improve GSM/GPRS XID negotiation methods, where the timing for exactly when the new parameters are to take effect must be known includes either a GPRS-type reset solution or a PDCP-header based change indicator solution. In the GPRS-type reset solution, PDCP negotiations are made and then connections are reset to put into effect the new PDCP parameters for use. The second solution is to add a change indicator, e.g., a bit (C-bit) to the PDCP-PDU's header part. The originator informs using this bit that new parameter values are to take effect for use.

  • Publication number: 20030063569
Abstract: The present invention describes a method for selecting a preferable codec mode for a connection between a first communication device (UE1) and a second communication device (UE2), where the devices communicate via a network. An element in the network observes a quality of said connection. The quality is based on a data error level of network resource. Based on the observation the network element judges a preferable operational mode of the codec, from a group of operational modes of the codec. The preferable codec mode is based on the quality level of the connection. In the preferred embodiment, if a Radio Network Controller (RNC) observes congestion by observing Real-Time Protocol (RTP) header information, the RNC judges a lower codec mode for the connection. The lower mode for the connection is judged if there is at least one gap in a sequence of detected packets.
