  • Publication number: 20050267489
Abstract: An endoscopic surgical device for retrieving objects, such as for example, severed human tissue, foreign objects or impacted food bolus, from within a subject is disclosed. The device includes a body and handle movable relative to the body, a tubular member fixed to the body, a link having a first end fixed to the handle and a second end remote from the body, and a net including a loop and a net element. The loop is expandable and collapsible by action of the handle relative to the body. The loop retains an expanded configuration when deployed to allow for the capture certain objects that were otherwise difficult to capture because of positioning, location, or object characteristics. The loop may be constructed of flat wire and form a polygon shape when deployed. Structure at the distal end of the loop may propel and retain the loop into an open position when in use in narrow organs such as the esophagus.

  • Publication number: 20050267361
Abstract: A device for delivering an apparatus or object to a targeted location within a human subject is disclosed. The device includes a body, a handle mounted to and movable relative to the body, a tube, a cable, and retention unit. The tube has a first end fixed to the body and a second end fixed to the retention unit. The cable has a first end fixed to the handle and a second end remote from the body. The cable extends substantially through the tube. The retention unit applies a retention force sufficient to retain the capsule during endoscopic delivery to the targeted release location. Manipulation of the handle in a direction relative to the retention unit generates a force on the apparatus greater than the retention force. A method of use is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20050267331
Abstract: An overtube device for use in intubation during an endoscopic procedure is disclosed. The device includes an outer tube and an inner tube. The outer tube includes a distal end, a proximal end, and a first handle disposed on the proximal end. The inner tube includes a distal end, a proximal end, and a second handle disposed on the proximal end. The inner tube is inserted through an entire length of the outer tube such that the inner tube extends beyond the outer tube. At the proximal end of the device, a proximal end of the first handle is connected to a distal end of the second handle. When the inner tube is co-axially inserted within the outer tube, a clearance exists between a length of the inner and outer tubes, and between a length of the inner tube and the endoscope. Methods of use are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6906890
Abstract: A data storage tape cartridge used in a tape transport apparatus that incorporates air bearing technology is provided. The tape cartridge includes a housing for storing the data storage tape and a compressible filter. The filter is located proximate to an opening, or air inlet, that is in communication with the housing interior. The housing may also have a second opening, or air outlet, in communication with the housing interior such that the filter is interposed between the inlet and the outlet. Further, the housing may include a storage region to retain the filter in the compressed state. The filter and the storage region may have congruent geometries. A method of supplying filtered air to a tape transport apparatus is also provided. The method contemplates drawing ambient air through the filter and passing it directly through the outlet opening for use by the tape transport apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20040090947
Abstract: A method of signal reception according to one embodiment of the invention includes receiving a set of data values over a first frequency band during a first time slot, and receiving another set of data values over the first frequency band during a second time slot which is after the first time slot. Between the first and second time slots, the method includes sampling a signal received over a second frequency band and storing the samples. Based on the samples, a received signal quality value is calculated.

  • Patent number: 6700676
Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for providing an interface to a digital wireless telephone system compatible with standard analog wire line fax machines is described. To process a fax, a source interface waits until an interface to a destination fax machine has been established before establishing an interface to a source fax machine. The source fax transmission rate must be less than or equal to the destination fax transmission rate and the data rate of the digital channel. To establish the source fax interface at the proper rate, the source interface first selects and initial data rate from a set of standard fax transmission rates. The source interface sends unacceptable rate (failure to train) messages to the source fax machine until the source fax transmission rate is less than or equal to the data channel rate and the destination fax transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 6404197
Abstract: A magnet assembly for a small scale NMR spectroscopy apparatus suitable for laboratory or home use, generally comprising two permanent magnets facing one another so that the facing surfaces have opposite polarities, a pole cap on each of the two facing surfaces of the permanent magnets, and a plurality of radially polarized canceling magnets disposed about the permanent magnets and pole caps. The design and position of the radially polarized canceling magnets about the tapered pole caps reduces leakage of the magnetic field, to maintain the magnetic field strength and homogeneity within the test region, without a disadvantageous increase in the size, weight and cost of the NMR apparatus. A curved edge ring shim may be used to increase magnetic field homogeneity in the test region. Also provided is a method for measurement of glucose concentration in a fluid using NMR spectroscopy.

  • Patent number: 6377815
Abstract: A switch (212) is included in a wireless terminal (206). Different settings of the switch cause a processor (210) in the wireless terminal to use different device algorithms. The switch itself is set by applying a code signal to the wireless terminal through its RJ-11 interface (208). The code is a sequence of Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones, which may conveniently be provided by an ordinary telephone (214), or by a computer modem (204). A single wireless terminal may therefore be reconfigured on demand to interface with any of a variety of devices (202), (214).

  • Patent number: 6278775
Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for providing an interface to a digital wireless telephone system compatible with standard analog wire line telephones and analog wire line fax machines is disclosed. During a telephone call, a fax detector monitors the incoming data for fax signals. If a fax is detected, the data processor switches from processing the data as if it were voice to processing it as fax In addition, the remote station is sent a signal notifying it to process the data as fax rather than voice. The fax detector operates by detecting the preamble of a V.21 message, present at the beginning of every fax call. Energy is measured in both frequencies of the BFSK signals. A decision is made by analyzing these energies and locating a specific pattern which repeats itself a sufficient number of times.

  • Patent number: 6147978
Abstract: In a half-duplex communication system in which additional delays in the communication channel may cause a message collision between a message and a response, a timer based collision prevention circuit is utilized to prevent the message collision. The collision prevention circuit determines if the message transmitted by a communication device will be repeated. If the message is to be repeated, the collision prevention circuit sets a countdown collision timer to a predetermined period of time shorter than the shortest repetition interval of the repeated message. A response is only sent to the communication device if the collision timer has not expired. If the timer expires, the collision prevention circuit waits for the message to be retransmitted by the source device before sending the response to the communication device.
