  • Publication number: 20130150041
Abstract: A method and apparatus for session continuity using pre-registration tunneling procedure are disclosed. For session continuity, a tunnel is established between a multi-mode wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a core network of a target system via a source system while the WTRU is still connected with the source system. An access procedure is performed toward the target system using the tunnel. A handover is the performed from the source system to the target system once the access procedure is complete. The access procedure includes session initiation protocol (SIP) registration, authentication of the WTRU at the target system, and internet protocol (IP) configuration. The handover may be from a third generation partnership project (3GPP) system to a non-3GPP system, or vice versa.

  • Publication number: 20130084829
Abstract: A method and apparatus for interworking between a mobile network operator and an application provider are disclosed. A network application function (NAF) may be co-located with an OpenID provider such that an application server may communicate with the NAF to access a home subscriber server (HSS) via a bootstrapping server function (BSF). The interfaces between BSF and HSS, and between BSF and NAF may be enhanced to carry information that is available through Sh interface between the application server and the HSS. When the WTRU is roaming in a visited network, the application server may communicate with the visited network for charging and policing for serving the service request from the WTRU. The application server may be co-located with an NAF, and may authenticate the WTRU using Generic Bootstrapping Architecture, and may communicate with a BSF in a home network via an eZn-proxy function to access an HSS.

  • Publication number: 20130007186
Abstract: A tracker application server (AS) instructs a content cache server (CCS) to join a peer-to-peer (P2P) swarm based on the status of the P2P swarm. The tracker AS determines whether to invite a CCS to join the P2P swarm be based on an underlying network condition change, a peer node joining or leaving the P2P swarm, change(s) in traffic condition, location, capability or workload of the peer node(s) in the swarm. The tracker AS sends an invitation message to the CCS, indicating the content of interest and a peer list identifying the peer nodes of the P2P swarm. Upon receiving the invitation message from the tracker AS, the CCS sends a response to the tracker AS. Upon receiving a response indicating the acceptance of the invitation, the tracker AS puts the CCS into the P2P swarm, and the CCS joins the swarm using a P2P protocol.

  • Patent number: 8295246
Abstract: A method and system for supporting an evolved universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS) terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) are disclosed. The system includes a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), a UTRAN and an E-UTRAN. The UTRAN sends to the WTRU a list of available radio access technologies in a coverage area of the UTRAN. The list includes information related to the E-UTRAN. The WTRU receives the list and may initiate a handoff based on the list. The WTRU then sends its multi-mode/multi-RAT capability information including the E-UTRAN capability to the UTRAN. The UTRAN then sends a measurement capability message to the WTRU. The measurement capability message includes parameters necessary for performing measurements on an E-UTRAN channel. The WTRU performs measurements based on the measurement capability message and reports measurement results to the UTRAN. The UTRAN may initiate a handoff to the E-UTRAN based on the measurement results.

  • Publication number: 20120257598
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for performing a selected Internet protocol (IP) traffic offload (SIPTO) procedure. A network node, (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME) or a serving general packet radio service (GPRS) support node (SGSN)), may receive a packet data network (PDN) connectivity request from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). A determination may be made to perform SIPTO at a local network, and the WTRU may perform a PDN release and reconnection procedure. The determination may be based on at least one of a closed subscriber group (CSG) identity (ID), a home evolved Node-B (HeNB) ID or a local network ID. An access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF) may be queried for IP interface selection (OPIIS) rules, a local access point name (APN) that supports per flow SIPTO at a local network, and IP flows that may be routed to the local APN.

  • Publication number: 20120252517
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for triggering and synchronizing a machine type communication (MTC) device are described. MTC devices may operate in a time controlled mode, where the MTC device attaches to a network at specified intervals to report to a network. The time controlled mode may include two time controlled cycles, a reporting cycle and a control cycle. Methods are also described for communicating the reporting and control cycles between the MTC device and the network or MTC server. These cycles may be communicated on an application layer, by an MTC server using an MTCsp interface or via MTC configuration. In addition, triggering cycles may be sent via the Non-Access-Stratum (NAS) layer by extending discontinuous reception (DRX) cycles or by allowing a network to send the cycles over a broadcast channel by defining new System information block (SIB) information.

  • Publication number: 20120252518
Abstract: A method and apparatus for network initiated attachment are provided. A machine-type communication (MTC) wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) is in a detached state. A MTC server sends a trigger request to the MTC WTRU via a network entity, such as a Home Subscriber Server (HSS), a mobility management gateway (MME), a Serving General packet radio service Support Node (SGSN), or a combination thereof. The network entity stores, updates, or obtains information associated with a current, former, or default connection status of the WTRU. The information is obtained from the WTRU attach request message, subscription information, locally stored information, or a combination thereof. The subscription information includes a subscription profile. The WTRU, upon receiving the trigger request, performs a network attachment procedure, enters an attached state and communicates with the MTC server. The WTRU performs a network detach procedure and enters a detached state after completing communications with the MTC server.

Inter-WTRU transfer request messages, flow addition request messages and session update request messages may be exchanged between a plurality of WTRUs and a session continuity control application server (SCC-AS). Each of the messages may include a session description protocol (SDP) attribute line containing time synchronization information (e.g., a presentation time offset (PTO) information element (IE), a media flow group identity (ID) and a synchronization tolerance IE). The SCC-AS may update the time synchronization information and include the updated information in messages it sends to the WTRUs, which may re-synchronize their respective media flows based on the updated time synchronization information.

  • Publication number: 20120220323
Abstract: A method for delivering a short message service (SMS) message to an interworking wireless local area network user equipment (UE) begins by registering the UE with an Internet Protocol short message gateway (IP-SM-GW). A capability report is sent from the UE to the IP-SM-GW, the capability report including the capabilities of the UE. A SMS message is transmitted from a short message service center (SMSC) to the IP-SM-GW. The capabilities of the UE are evaluated at the IP-SM-GW to determine whether the UE can receive the SMS message, and the SMS message is delivered to the UE via the IP-SM-GW if the UE has the capabilities to receive the SMS message.

  • Publication number: 20120163341
Abstract: A method and system for interworking between cellular networks and wireless local area networks (WLANs) are disclosed. At least one cellular network, at least one WLAN, and an IP network may be deployed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may establish a connection to a WLAN and a tunnel between an access point (AP) and a packet data gateway (PDG) may be established. The PDG may establish a tunnel to an IP network. The WTRU may invoke a service which is delivered through the WLAN. As signal quality from the AP degrades below a predetermined threshold, a handover from the WLAN to the cellular network may be performed. A new connection to the cellular network may be established either before or after breaking the current connection to the WLAN or the two connections may be maintained simultaneously.
