  • Publication number: 20140094166
Abstract: Methods and network nodes are described. A network node receives an attach request message from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) via a cellular radio access network (RAN). The attach request message includes a mobile station (MS) radio access capability information element (IE), and the MS radio access capability IE includes a field that indicates whether the WTRU is capable of receiving services from a core network via a non-cellular wireless access network. • Patent number: 8649322
Abstract: A method and system for controlling access to a wireless communication medium are disclosed. The system includes at least one access point (AP) and at least one station (STA). The AP defines a superframe for transmission of data in a time domain having a high throughput (HT) period which includes at least one scheduled resource allocation (SRA) and at least one management SRA (MSRA). The AP broadcasts an extended beacon (EB) including information about the SRA and MSRA. The SRA is defined for transmitting traffic data between the AP and the STA, and the MSRA is defined for transmitting management and control data between the AP and the STA. The system reduces station battery consumption, supports higher throughput for non-real time (NRT) traffic and is more efficient for real time (RT) traffic while maintaining full compatibility.

  • Publication number: 20140036872
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for handover between a 3GPP based network and a non-3GPP network is disclosed where a policy update to a new gateway is requested. A confirmation of the policy update is sent from the policy and charging rules function (PCRF) to the 3GPP packet data network gateway (PDN GW). The new gateway also confirms the policy update to the currently serving gateway. The tunnel endpoints and radio resources are released between the PDN GW and the evolved Packet Data Gateway (ePDG), thereby freeing the resources previously used by the wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). A release acknowledgement is sent from the serving gateway to the PCRF confirming the policy update process is complete. The method may be used for handover between 3GPP and non-3GPP networks and vice versa. The method and apparatus may be practiced over the S2b or S2c interfaces.

  • Publication number: 20140003411
Abstract: A method for delivering a short message service (SMS) message to an interworking wireless local area network user equipment (UE) begins by registering the UE with an Internet Protocol short message gateway (IP-SM-GW). A capability report is sent from the UE to the IP-SM-GW, the capability report including the capabilities of the UE. A SMS message is transmitted from a short message service center (SMSC) to the IP-SM-GW. The capabilities of the UE are evaluated at the IP-SM-GW to determine whether the UE can receive the SMS message, and the SMS message is delivered to the UE via the IP-SM-GW if the UE has the capabilities to receive the SMS message.

  • Patent number: 8619757
Abstract: Method and apparatus delivering voice/data services within a piconet operating over a limited range or over a WLAN communicating with 3GPP devices by reformatting data into IP format before delivering to the WLAN. The service is short message service (SMS). Upon receipt of an SMS message, relevant routing information is retrieved. A PDGW address for the SMS message is identified and is sent to the PDGW address which identifies the WLAN user equipment (UE) for receiving the SMS and reformats the SMS message into IP format (text or encapsulation) for delivery to the UE. A protocol architecture is provided for SMS delivery over WLANs, in particular, for UMTS/CDMA based SMS over WLAN through two alternative mechanisms, i.e., SMS tunneling and SMS proxy, for protocols for the delivery of SMS across the WLAN. The invention enhances standard 802.11 in the context of UMTS and CDMA 2000; as well as other scenarios.

  • Publication number: 20130344867
Abstract: A multiple wireless access technology capable (WAT-capable) wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU) includes a registration message generator configured to generate a registration message indicating that the WTRU is configured to communicate using an IEEE 802.11x technology. The WTRU also includes a transmitter configured to send the registration message via an IEEE 802.11x WLAN to a cellular network during registration with the cellular network, and a receiver configured to receive services from the cellular network via the WLAN. The registration message further indicates that the WTRU is configured to receive Short Message Service (SMS) messages from the cellular network via the WLAN. The WTRU receiver receives services that include Short Message Service (SMS) messages.

  • Publication number: 20130303206
Abstract: Systems, methods, and instrumentalities are provided to determine routing associated with a short message. A SMS-SC may send a first routing request to a home subscriber server (HSS). The first routing request may be associated with the short message. The SMS-SC may receive a first routing reply. The first routing reply may include one of an indication that the short message is associated with a service capability server (SCS) or a first control plane routing associated with the short message. The SMS-SC may send the short message to an SCS serving node. The first routing reply may include the indication that the short message is associated with a service capability server (SCS). The SMS-SC may send a second routing request to a SCS subscription database. The SMS-SC may receive a second routing reply from the SCS subscription database, which may indicate a second control plane routing for the short message.

  • Publication number: 20130279373
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for providing triggering services over multiple access networks. A triggering service server (TSS) architecture includes a triggering identity function (TIF) which maintains a database of device and application identifier mappings across multiple access networks, triggering capabilities and triggering preferences. The TSS also includes a triggering decision function (TDF) that uses information from the TIF and determines how triggers should be performed towards a device and/or an application hosted on a particular device. The TSS also includes triggering gateways (T-GWs) that perform triggering in different domains. A “not-registered-triggerable” state may be used to indicate whether an entity, such as a device, application or user can receive triggers although it is not registered in a specific access network.
