  • Patent number: 10126397
Abstract: Systems and methods for reconstructing images using a hierarchically semiseparable (“HSS”) solver to compactly represent the inverse encoding matrix used in the reconstruction are provided. The reconstruction method includes solving for the actual inverse of the encoding matrix using a direct (i.e., non-iterative) HSS solver. This approach is contrary to conventional reconstruction methods that repetitively evaluate forward models (e.g., compressed sensing or parallel imaging forward models).

  • Publication number: 20180292486
Abstract: A magnetic resonance fingerprinting (“MRF”) framework that implements simultaneous multislice acquisition techniques with a Hadamard RF-encoding to simultaneously acquire magnetic resonance data from multiple slices simultaneously is described. As one non-limiting example, magnetic resonance data can be simultaneously acquired from four different slices. In other embodiments, however, the Hadamard encoding can be condensed into one or two acquisitions, rather than four.

  • Publication number: 20180100908
Abstract: Systems and methods for simultaneously acquiring high-resolution images of a subject from multiple different slice locations using magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”) are described. The present invention overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks by providing method for producing a plurality of images of a subject with a magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”) system. A radio frequency (RF) excitation field is applied by the MRI system to a portion of a subject that includes a plurality of slice locations. First data are simultaneously acquired from each of the plurality of slice locations by the MRI system.

  • Patent number: 9897675
Abstract: Magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) with simultaneous multivolume acquisition (SMVA) is described. One example nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) apparatus includes an NMR logic that repetitively and variably samples (k, t, E) spaces associated with different volumes (e.g., slices) in an object to simultaneously acquire sets of NMR signals that are associated with different points in the (k, t, E) spaces. Sampling is performed with t and/or E varying in a non-constant way. The NMR apparatus may also include a signal logic that produces an NMR signal evolution from the NMR signals and compares the NMR signal evolution to reference signal evolutions. Since different volumes are excited differently, resulting signal evolutions can be acquired simultaneously from the different volumes and NMR parameters may be simultaneously determined for the multiple volumes, which reduces acquisition time and parameter map creation time.

  • Publication number: 20170328971
Abstract: Methods for reducing scan time in magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”), particularly when imaging three-dimensional image volumes, using a simultaneous time-interleaved multislice (“STIMS”) acquisition are described. The unused time in each repetition time (“TR”) period is exploited to provide an additional reduction in encoding time for a three-dimensional acquisition (e.g., a 3D whole brain coverage). Groups of spatially interleaved slices are excited in a single TR, with the excitation and acquisition of the groups of slices being interleaved in time.

  • Patent number: 9778338
Abstract: A method for multi-slice magnetic resonance imaging, in which image data is acquired simultaneously from multiple slice locations using a radio frequency coil array, is provided. By way of example, a modified EPI pulse sequence is provided, and includes a series of magnetic gradient field “blips” that are applied along a slice-encoding direction contemporaneously with phase-encoding blips common to EPI sequences. The slice-encoding blips are designed such that phase accruals along the phase-encoding direction are substantially mitigated, while providing that signal information for each sequentially adjacent slice location is cumulatively shifted by a percentage of the imaging FOV. This percentage FOV shift in the image domain provides for more reliable separation of the aliased signal information using parallel image reconstruction methods such as SENSE.

  • Patent number: 9778336
Abstract: A system and method for medical imaging using a magnetic resonance imaging system includes performing a segmented echo planar imaging (EPI) pulse sequence. The pulse sequence includes performing multiple radio frequency (RF) excitation pulses designed to excite multiple imaging slices across the subject simultaneously. A gradient encoding scheme applied along the slice-encoding direction is implemented to impart controlled phase shifts to the different imaging slices. Additionally, the multiple RF excitation pulses can be designed to further control an overlap of imaging data acquired from adjacent slices of the multiple imaging slices based on a selected offset. The acquired imaging data is reconstructed using a parallel imaging reconstruction method that separates overlapped slices in the imaging data to provide a series of images with respective images for each of the multiple imaging slices across the subject.

  • Publication number: 20170108570
Abstract: Systems and methods for performing diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”), including reconstructing and analyzing images, while preserving phase information that is traditionally discarded in such applications, are provided. For instance, background phase variations are eliminated, which enables complex-valued data analysis without the usual noise bias. As a result, the systems and methods described here provide an image reconstruction that enables true signal averaging, which increases signal-to-noise ratio (“SNR”) and allows higher contrast in diffusion model reconstructions without a magnitude bias.

  • Publication number: 20170097403
Abstract: Systems and methods for estimating the actual k-space trajectory implemented when acquiring data with a magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”) system while jointly reconstructing an image from that acquired data are described. An objective function that accounts for deviations between the actual k-space trajectory and a designed k-space trajectory while also accounting for the target image is optimized. To reduce the computational burden of the optimization, a reduced model for the parameters associated with the k-space trajectory deviation and the target image can be implemented.

  • Patent number: 9588208
Abstract: A method for accelerated segmented magnetic resonance (MR) image data acquisition includes using a plurality of RF pulses to excite one or more slices of an anatomical area of interest according to a predetermined slice acceleration factor. Next, a collapsed image comprising the slices is acquired using a consecutive segment acquisition process. Then, a parallel image reconstruction method is applied to the collapsed image to separate the collapsed image into a plurality of slice images.

  • Publication number: 20170045599
Abstract: Systems and methods for a hierarchical mapping framework (“HMF”} for coil compression are provided. The HMF-based coil compression can be applied to existing coil compression algorithms to improve their performance. The receive channels associated with a coil array are divided into subgroups based on the strength of their mutual correlation. In each subgroup, one or more virtual channels are produced based on the channels not in the subgroup. The virtual channels are produced using a coil compression algorithm subject to a hierarchically semiseparable channel mixing across the subgroups. Images are reconstructed for the subgroups and then combined to produce the final image of the subject.

  • Publication number: 20170038450
Abstract: Systems and methods for combined ghost artifact correction and parallel imaging reconstruction of simultaneous multislice (“SMS”) magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”) data are provided. Dual-polarity training data are used to generate ghost-free slice data, which are used as target data in a reconstruction kernel training process. The training data are used as source data in the reconstruction kernel training. As a result, reconstruction kernels are computed, which can be used to reconstruct images from SMS data in which slice-specific ghosting artifacts are removed.

  • Publication number: 20170016972
Abstract: A magnetic resonance (MR) method and system are provided for generating real-time prospective motion-corrected images using fast navigators. The real-time motion correction is achieved by using a 2D EPI navigator that is obtained using a simultaneous multi-slice blipped-CAIPI technique. The navigator parameters such as field of view, voxel size, and matrix size can be selected to facilitate fast acquisition while providing information sufficient to detect rotational motions on the order of several degrees or more and translational motions on the order of several millimeters or more. The total time interval for obtaining and reconstructing navigator data, registering the navigator image, and providing feedback to correct for detected motion, can be on the order of about 100 ms or less. This prospective motion correction can be used with a wide range of MR imaging techniques where the pulse sequences do not have significant intervals of “dead” time.

  • Publication number: 20170010340
Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system to simultaneously excite multiple different slice locations. A multiband (MB) radio frequency (RF) pulse waveform is combined with an RF pulse waveform that results in periodic excitation of the slice locations, such as a power independent of a number of slices (PINS) RF pulse waveform. Before combination, the MB RF pulse waveform is preferably transformed to traverse the excitation k-space trajectory defined by a plurality of slice-encoding gradient blips. The combined RF pulse waveform is used to generate an RF excitation field generated while the plurality of slice-encoding gradient blips are played out. The portions of the combined RF pulse associated with the MB RF pulse are played out during the gradient blips, and the portions associated with the PINS RF pulse are played out between the gradient blips.

  • Patent number: 9542763
Abstract: Described here are systems and methods for quantitative susceptibility mapping (“QSM”) using magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”). Susceptibility maps are reconstructed from phase images using an automatic regularization technique based in part on variable splitting. Two different regularization parameters are used, one, ?, that controls the smoothness of the final susceptibility map and one, ?, that controls the convergence speed of the reconstruction. For instance, the regularization parameters can be determined using an L-curve heuristic to find the parameters that yield the maximum curvature on the L-curve. The ? parameter can be determined based on an l2-regularization and the ? parameter can be determined based on the iterative l1-regularization used to reconstruct the susceptibility map.

  • Publication number: 20170003368
Abstract: A system and method for producing high resolution diffusion information and imaging from a subject. In some aspects, the method includes receiving a plurality of low resolution diffusion images, each acquired with a different set of gradient directions and shifted in a slice direction, and generating a model correlating diffusion signals associated with the plurality of low resolution diffusion images and a high resolution diffusion image. The method also includes reconstructing the high resolution diffusion image by minimizing a cost function determined using the model. In some applications, the method further includes processing the high resolution diffusion image to generate a report providing diffusion information associated with the subject.
