  • Patent number: 4425451
Abstract: Water dispersible epoxy-phosphate ester polymer salts are disclosed which exhibit improved stability in coating compositions contining aminoplast or phenoplast resin. These salts are provided by reacting a resinous polyepoxide having at least about 1.4 oxirane groups per molecule with less than 0.9 mol of orthophosphoric acid for each oxirane equivalent in the polyepoxide to form a monoester reaction product containing residual epoxy functionality. The monoester reaction product so-provided is then reacted with at least 1 mol of a volatile amine per equivalent of oxirane functionality in said monoester to provide a water dispersible product lacking oxirane functionality. Ether alcohols, and especially 2-butoxy ethanol, are relied upon to provide dispersions having low viscosity.

  • Patent number: 4404336
Abstract: Epoxy ester copolymer dispersible in water with the aid of an amine, which may be ammonia, is provided by esterifying a polyepoxide having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency in excess of 1.0 and a molecular weight of from 350 to 8000 with at least 0.5% of the weight of the copolymer of a monoester of a saturated monohydric alcohol with a monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid which resists homopolymerization. This polyepoxide ester is copolymerized with from 15% to 70% of monoethylenic monomers, based on the weight of the copolymer, these monoethylenic monomers including carboxyl functional monomer providing an acid number of from 20-150 in the copolymer.

  • Patent number: 4396732
Abstract: An amine resin soluble in water with the aid of an acid is produced by reacting a dihydric phenolic compound, such as a bisphenol, with a stoichiometric deficiency of preferably aromatic diepoxide, and then reacting the product containing less than -0.3 part of unreacted dihydric phenolic compound per part of reaction product with at least about 3.25 mol of formaldehyde per mol of said reaction product and with monosecondary amine to produce a Mannich base. This Mannich base is then reacted with additional diepoxide in an amount of from 0.5 to 2 epoxy equivalents per epoxy equivalent in the initially used diepoxide.

  • Patent number: 4387197
Abstract: The production of amine resins having Mannich base groups which dissolve in water with the aid of a solubilizing acid is disclosed in which a dihydric phenolic organic compound, such as a bisphenol, is reacted in organic solvent medium with at least 3 moles of formaldehyde per mol of bisphenol to at least partially methylolate the bisphenol prior to other reactions. The at least partially methylolated product is then reacted with a stoichiometric deficiency of organic diepoxide, and then with monosecondary amine to provide Mannich base groups. The Mannich base-containing product is then reacted with additional epoxide-functional material.

  • Patent number: 4263192
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for the production of a water dispersible solution of acidic copolymer in water soluble polyol with controlled limited reaction between the copolymer and the polyol. This method comprises copolymerizing monoethylenically unsaturated monomers including a proportion of carboxyl-functional monomer providing dispersibility in water with the aid of a base and from 0.5%-5%, based on the total weight of monomers, of a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying a reactive group selected from dicarboxylic acid anhydride functionality and N-methylol functionality, the copolymerization being carried out in solution in a water soluble polyol. This copolymerization is preceded by or carried out under conditions causing substantially complete reaction between the anhydride or the N-methylol functionality in the reactive monomer, and the hydroxy groups in the polyol. Aqueous coating compositions are provided by dispersing the copolymer solution in water with the aid of a volatile base.

  • Patent number: 4260730
Abstract: A bisphenol is reacted with formaldehyde in solution in alcohol in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, preferably at a pH of from 7-10, to provide a polymethylol derivative. Nitric acid is then added to precipitate the hydroxide and an excess is preferably used to provide an acid pH, preferably pH 1-3, and the acidic mixture is heat reacted to remove water of etherification. The nitric acid catalyst is then precipitated with alkali metal hydroxide to enable easy removal of both acid and alkali as an insoluble salt.
