  • Patent number: 4076677
Abstract: Monoethylenic monomers, including from about 1 to about 30% by weight of monoethylenic carboxylic acid, are placed in solution in a liquid mixture preferably containing a low molecular weight polyhydric alcohol and an anionic surfactant and this liquid mixture is dispersed in water containing a C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 alkanol and polymerized in the presence of an organic peroxide free radical polymerization catalyst at an elevated temperature, while agitating the dispersion. The dispersion of polymer particles is then at least partially neutralized, preferably with ammonia or an amine, to form an aqueous dispersion which is stable and which is useful in electrocoating.

  • Patent number: 4075133
Abstract: Acidic copolymers formed by copolymerizing monoethylenic monomers with a polyethylenically unsaturated polyether formed by reacting allyl glycidyl ether with a phenolic OH terminated intermediate produced by reacting a diepoxide with excess bisphenol have been found to be unusually adapted to anodic electrodeposition where substantially the same polyethylenically unsaturated polyether formed by direct etherification using allyl alcohol does not provide satisfactory results.

  • Patent number: 4058499
Abstract: A high gloss, water base, pigmented latex is provided by grinding a pigment into a water-free solution of a carboxyl-functional addition copolymer of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers including at least about 3% by weight of monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in water miscible organic solvent, the copolymer being at least partially neutralized with an amine, particularly an hydroxy amine, to render the said copolymer dispersible in water, and thereby form a nonaqueous pigment paste, and then mixing the nonaqueous pigment paste with an aqueoux latex. The invention includes the latex paint so-produced.

  • Patent number: 4052480
Abstract: Resinous coating compositions of low volatile solvent content are provided which are sufficiently fluid to permit effective application, and which cure on baking at low temperature to provide hard stain- and detergent-resistant coatings of outstanding flexibility. These are made by copolymerizing monoethylenic monomers including monoethylenic monomer having a functional group reactive with N-methylol functionality and selected from carboxylic acid, hydroxy and amide groups, the copolymerization being carried out in a solvent solution containing a major proportion of liquid bishydroxy propyl ether of a bisphenol. The copolymer solution has added thereto an aminoplast resin to provide a stable solution in which proportions are important so that coatings can be easily applied and cured to provide the desired characteristics without liberating excessive amounts of volatile material.

  • Patent number: 4036800
Abstract: Amine functional urethane copolymers dispersible in water with the aid of a solubilizing acid are provided by copolymerizing (A) 5-75% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated urethane amine free of epoxy groups and formed by reacting an epoxy-functional urethane in which the urethane groups are ethylenically unsaturated with a monosecondary amine; and (B) the balance consisting essentially of copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers. These monomers preferably include amine-functional monomers to further increase the amine functionality.

  • Patent number: 4033917
Abstract: Nongelled, amine functional polymers dispersible in water with the aid of a solubilizing acid are provided by copolymerizing (A) an ethylenically unsaturated hydroxy functional amine adduct free of epoxy groups and containing from about 1.4 to about 2.0 ethylenically unsaturated amine groups per molecule, formed from a polyepoxide having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency of from 1.4 to about 2.0 and at least a stoichiometric amount of an ethylenically unsaturated primary amine; and (B) copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, a portion of which is amine-functional. The water solutions are particularly useful to enable corrosion resistant coatings to be electrodeposited at the cathode.

  • Patent number: 4022737
Abstract: Finely divided particles of normally solid addition polymer, such as particles of polyvinylidene fluoride having a particle size of from about 0.1 to about 60 microns in average diameter, and which are not stably dispersible in water in the absence of extraneous surface active agent, are stably dispersed by means of a carboxy-functional copolymer containing at least 30% by weight of copolymerized monomer providing terminal hydrocarbon groups having at least 8 carbon atoms, the copolymer being dissolved in the aqueous medium by salt formation with a base.

  • Patent number: 3976615
Abstract: Epoxy ether-amino acrylate polymers dispersible in water with the aid of an acid are provided by etherifying a polyepoxide with an ethylenically unsaturated alcohol to provide an unsaturated hydroxy-functional polyether containing from about 1.2 to about 2.0 ethylenically unsaturated ether groups per molecule. This polyether is copolymerized in organic solvent solution with monoethylenically unsaturated monomers including amine-functional monomer to provide an amine copolymer which is solubilized in water with an acid at a pH of 5.0-7.0. These water dispersions which are formed can be electrodeposited at the cathode to form valuable coatings despite the approximately neutral pH of the bath from which they are deposited.

  • Patent number: 3963663
Abstract: Thermosetting coatings which cure to provide exceptionally corrosion resistant coatings are deposited at the cathode by combining a water dispersible salt of an acid with certain polyamine resins with a water dispersible heat-hardening phenolic resin. The polyamine resin is hydroxy functional and it contains diprimary amine adducted with the epoxy groups of an epoxy urethane. These polyamines provide aqueous electrocoating baths having a pH in the range of 5-7.5.
