Patent number: 5113449Abstract: Method and apparatus for altering the voice characteristics of synthesized speech to obtain modified synthesized speech of any one of a plurality of voice sounds from a single applied source of synthesized speech, wherein the method relies upon the simulation of an adjustment in the sampling period of the digital speech data from the single applied source of synthesized speech based upon the inequality between first and second reference factors, thereby altering the vocal tract model of the digital speech data to a preselected degree. At the same time, the predetermined pitch period and the predetermined speech rate of the source of synthesized speech remain unchanged.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1988Date of Patent: May 12, 1992Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventors: Keith A. Patent number: 4873585Abstract: A method and apparatus for simulating movement within a multi-dimensional space by selecting and reproducing a particular one of a plurality of selectable sequences of video images subsequent to a given sequence of video images. The apparatus comprises an interactive random access video disc system for storing the sequences of video images. Video image windowing means provides as a video output only a predetermined "window" portion of each retrieved video image. The window portion of an ending image of a given retrieved sequence substantially duplicates the window portion of a starting image of a retrieved sequence reproduced immediately subsequent to the given sequence, thereby providing a relatively imperceptible transition between sequences.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1987Date of Patent: October 10, 1989Assignee: Ivex CorporationInventors: Keith A. Blanton, William M. Finlay, Michael J. Sinclair, John E. Tumblin

Patent number: 4807158Abstract: A method and apparatus for simulating movement within a multidimensional space by sampling a prestored panoramic image. The image formed by sampling is displayed on a CRT display screen. Each of the stored images represents the view derived from data stored as a panoramic projection of a flat world in an imaginary space, selected as a function of an observer's position within the imaginary space and orientation with respect to that space. The preferred embodiment selects prestored panoramic image data which has been mapped to a geometric projection surface called a "keypoint". The apparatus includes a random access video disc system for storing the keypoint data. The method involves mapping each pixel on the display screen to the imaginary space and thence to the keypoint projection surface in order to retrieve pixel information for display. Each keypoint projection surface represents an entire 360.degree.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1986Date of Patent: February 21, 1989Assignee: Daleco/Ivex Partners, Ltd.Inventors: Keith A. Patent number: 4731861Abstract: A method for scanning a page and locating individual characters on that page so that character recognition can be performed is disclosed. A page containing characters to be read is scanned with successive scan lines from top to bottom and the data contained in each scan line is transmitted to a buffer memory for temporary storage. An additional set of data which represents the significant amount of character information within a scan line is also generated and stored in a separate memory. When the microprocessor is ready to begin recognizing characters the set of data which indicates those scan lines containing significant character data is accessed and read. The microprocessor then accesses a different set of data which represents the significant character information as arranged in vertical pixel lines.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1983Date of Patent: March 15, 1988Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventors: Keith A. Blanton, Steven N. Petersen, Ramon E. Helms

Patent number: 4304965Abstract: Data converter for a speech synthesizer system wherein encoded formant parameters as stored in a memory are decoded and transformed or converted to reflection coefficients in real time by means of a circuit implementing a Taylor series type approximation. The reflection coefficients are then quantized and input to a speech synthesizer which utilizes quantized reflection coefficients to synthesize speech. The use of the coded formant frequency speech data which inherently contains more speech intelligence than reflection coefficient speech data enables a speech synthesizer system which utilizes quantized reflection coefficients to operate at a significantly lower bit rate than would otherwise be possible where reflection coefficients are employed as the speech data stored in the memory.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1979Date of Patent: December 8, 1981Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventors: Keith A.
