The metallic compound may be one selected from oxides, oxoacids and salts thereof. The unsaturated carboxylic acid includes, for example, ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic acids, ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic acids, and ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic acids. The process can produce hydroxylactones in high yields at low cost.
