Patent number: 7706097Abstract: Embodiments of the invention improve utility of a magnetic disk drive in which a head is retracted if the magnetic disk drive is in a dropping state. In one embodiment, an HDC/MPU provided in a magnetic disk drive judges whether the magnetic disk drive is in a dropping state based on an output from an acceleration sensor which may detect an acceleration and performs a retraction operation of a head. After the HDC/MPU judges that a drop is occurring, the HDC/MPU detects whether the drop judgment is incorrect according to whether a shock sensor detects a shock occurrence and changes the drop judgment condition based on a detection history of detected incorrect judgments.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2008Date of Patent: April 27, 2010Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Kenji Kuroki, Toru Aida, Kenichi Kuramoto, Yasuhiro Kotani

Publication number: 20090201598Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention precisely measure clearance variation by temperature change using a value in a RW channel. In an embodiment of the present invention, an HDD measures resolution by signals in a RW channel. The measured resolution shows variations depending on temperature according to two factors. One factor is the clearance variation depending on the temperature and the other is the variation in operational property of the RW channel depending on the temperature. The HDD compensates for the temperature variation of the resolution according to the two factors. The HDD uses two kinds of sensed temperature. One corresponds to the temperature inside an enclosure in which head sliders are provided and the other corresponds to the temperature of the chip in which the RW channel is implemented. Sensing the drive temperature and the channel temperature independently achieves precise compensation for the variation in the measured resolution caused by clearance variation and channel property.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 27, 2009Publication date: August 13, 2009Inventors: Hiroyasu Masuda, Yoshihiko Maeda, Kenichi Kuramoto, Masayuki Kurita, Kenji Kuroki

Patent number: 7551389Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to retracting a magnetic head of a disk drive device to a retract position in accordance with a fall state, and to suppressing the performance degradation due to erroneous fall determinations as well as occurrence of damage by a head-disk crash. According to one embodiment of the present invention, in a Hard Disk Drive (HDD), a servo controller moves a head slider to a cylinder at the side of a ramp at a predetermined timing that a fall determiner determines that it is falling and an unload controller starts an unload process. This shortens the time between determination by the fall determiner that it is falling to retraction of the head slider to the retract position. Furthermore, it prevents increase of the erroneous determinations by relaxing the fall determination condition for safety. Also, it shortens the time that the head slider returns to the initial position before the seek in case that it is not determined that it is falling.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 2007Date of Patent: June 23, 2009Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Shingo Tsuda, Kenji Kuroki, Toshiroh Unoki, Minoru Hashimoto

Patent number: 7542223Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide ways to write data in a load/unload area. In one embodiment, address numbers (ranging from 981 to 1065) whose order of addressing by host equipment is later than that of address numbers (ranging from 1 to 980) as logical block addresses (LBAs) assigned to data sectors in the data area are assigned as LBAs to data sectors whose absolute block addresses (ABAs) range from 1001 to 1100 in the load/unload area. As a result, when the host equipment performs addressing in a magnetic disk drive, the priority order given to the load/unload area becomes low. Accordingly, with the storage capacity being increased, it is possible to prevent the substantial performance from decreasing.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2006Date of Patent: June 2, 2009Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Minoru Hashimoto, Kenji Kuroki, Keishi Takahashi, Toshiroh Unoki
