The multi-control data table compression method of compressing a plurality of control data tables of a disk drive includes grouping the control data tables according to disk type according to a classifying standard, compressing the control data tables by groups according to a compressing standard, and generating the compressed control data tables.

Abstract: A system and method, which correctly and easily diagnose all types of failures generated in a disc drive, the system includes an interface, a system controller, a failure type diagnosis unit, and an output unit. The interface transmits an operation state information request signal to the disc drive and receives operation state information from the disc drive. The system controller transmits the operation state information request signal to the interface and generates a failure information file using the operation state information when the operation state information is received from the interface. The failure type diagnosis unit analyzes the failure information file generated by the system controller to diagnose the type of failure of the disc drive. The output unit outputs the result of the diagnosis of the type of failure under the control of the system controller.

Abstract: A flash memory that shares a booting function and a booting program, and an apparatus and method for protecting the same in an AT Attachment Packet Interface (ATAPI) drive. The flash memory includes a first boot zone, where a booting program is stored, a second boot zone, where a backup of the booting program is stored, and a data zone, where an executable and downloaded firmware program is stored, wherein the corresponding booting program in either of the first or second boot zones which has no error is executed when an error is detected in the alternate first or second boot zone. Accordingly, it is possible to restore a flash memory damaged due to some external cause to its original state, thereby reducing costs for replacement of the damaged flash memory.

Abstract: A method of updating firmware for a product by downloading the updated firmware and automatically diagnosing download errors when processing customer requests to update the firmware. The method is provided by starting provision of the firmware file to a user device and receiving from the user device a first temporary file indicating a start of downloading the firmware file, and receiving from the user device a second temporary file completion or a failure of the download. It is determined whether the download of the firmware file is started and whether the download was a success or a failure by inspecting the received first and second temporary files and to rectify a problem that caused the failure of the download based upon the received second temporary file.

Abstract: A technique for setting a speed of an optical disk player according to a condition of an optical disk performs the steps of: setting a speed of the optical disk and an interval for measuring the condition, reading data recorded on the optical disk at the predetermined speed and at the same time measuring a data transfer rate, an access time, a compared value with respect to a reference value and an error of the disk of the predetermined interval, displaying the condition of the optical disk and the measured speed thereof on a screen, and setting a desired speed with reference to the condition and speed displayed on the screen. Thus, the speed may be set according to the condition of the optical disk, to check stability of the optical disk and enhance the condition of the optical disk.

Abstract: A method of testing the durability and performance of a spindle motor in a CD-ROM drive includes the steps of (a) setting a test repetition number of rotation/halt operations of the spindle motor, and a test delay time; (b) executing a rotation/halt command of the spindle motor at a predetermined time interval, when a test command is input; (c) comparing the operation state of the spindle motor with the input command and determining whether an error has occurred, after the test delay time from the time when the rotation/halt command of the spindle motor was input;(d) providing a visual display of an error state, when an error has occurred at step (c); and (e) increasing the value of a counter and returning to step (b) if the counter value is less than the test repetition number, and providing a visual display of test completion if the counter value is not less than the test repetition number, when no error has occurred at step (c).
