  • Publication number: 20100189072
Abstract: A method of selecting an access domain for sending information between a wireless terminal and a core network, sessions between the wireless terminal and the core network being established and controlled using an IP Multimedia Subsystem. The method comprises maintaining within the IP Multimedia Subsystem a database holding information on real-time packet-switched service capabilities of a plurality of access domains, and interrogating said database based upon currently used and/or available access domains and selecting an access domain for use by the wireless terminal based upon the results of the interrogation.

  • Publication number: 20100097990
Abstract: A method and Packet Mobile Switching Center (PMSC) for providing MSC-based services over a packet-switched network. An interface between a mobile station and the PMSC is used to transfer control plane and user plane information between the mobile station and the PMSC over the packet-switched network. In one embodiment, the PMSC includes a network controller for handling control plane information from a packet-switched core network and an interworking unit for handling user plane information from the packet-switched core network.

  • Publication number: 20100075651
Abstract: A method of establishing a call to or from a mobile station (MS) operating in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) access network. An interface is established between the MS and a Packet Mobile Switching Center (PMSC), and the call is initiated after the network accepts a service request from the MS for an originating call, or after the MS is notified of a terminating call. The PMSC requests packet-switched domain resources from a Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) and establishes a voice bearer channel with an endpoint in the network when the requested resources are available. The PMSC facilitates bidirectional voice traffic between the MS and the endpoint. The PMSC may also use the PCRF to modify the bearer. The PMSC then signals the MS to modify parameters for the established call.

  • Publication number: 20100061337
Abstract: A method and mobile station for operating within one or more radio access networks. The radio access network broadcasts system information messages which indicate whether the network or cell supports a packet-switched handover procedure. The mobile station receives the system information messages and utilizes the indicated support as a factor in selecting a cell or routing area of a radio access network within which to camp.

  • Publication number: 20090282236
Abstract: A method of establishing a secure communication channel between a user terminal (2) and a SIP server (14) for the purpose of controlling a service such as an IPTV service. The method comprises sending from the user terminal (2) to the SIP server (14) a session initiation request, via an IP Multimedia Subsystem network, where the IP Multimedia Subsystem network incorporates into the request a P-Asserted-Identity. At the SIP server (14), access to the service is authorised on the basis of said P-Asserted-Identity and, upon successful authorisation, a security token is sent to the user terminal (2), via the IP Multimedia Subsystem network. The SIP server (14) and the user terminal (2) use said security token to establish a secure communication channel between each other.

  • Patent number: 7075920
Abstract: The combination of narrowband applications with broadband transport may be enabled by implementing a hybrid switch capable of operating as a narrowband switch, a broadband switch, and/or a combination narrowband/broadband switch. The hybrid switch may be initially installed/activated as a narrowband switch in order to operate with a network of all or mostly all narrowband switches. Eventually, the hybrid switch may be used entirely as a broadband switching mechanism when operated with a network of all or mostly all broadband switches. In the interim, the hybrid switch may be operated in a narrowband or a broadband mode on a communication-by-communication basis, for example, depending on the capabilities of the node or nodes to be used in establishing a given communication. The hybrid switch may include both broadband (e.g., ATM) and narrowband (e.g., STM) switching components.

  • Patent number: 7054305
Abstract: ATM is used as a transport and switching mechanism in a hybrid STM/ATM network while the signaling remains normal narrowband signaling. The narrowband signaling is transported on permanent paths over ATM connections, and the narrowband speech channels are transported on ATM and switched on a “Per call basis” (on-demand) through an ATM switch. A translator formats a call-setup-related signaling message into ATM cells so that the signaling message can be routed through an ATM switch to a circuit switched (STM) node. The circuit switched node (PSTN/ISDN) sets up a physical connection for the call and generates a further signaling message therefor that relates to the physical connection. The ATM switch routes an ATM cell-formatted version of the further signaling message to another ATM switch over an ATM physical interface. Thus, the ATM switch switches both narrowband traffic and signaling for the call over the ATM physical interface.

  • Patent number: 7043248
Abstract: A system and method for routing an incoming telephone call to a mobile terminal (106) which is a combined cordless phone and mobile phone. The call will be connected over either a fixed network (104) or a mobile network (102) depending on whether the mobile terminal is within or out of radio coverage of a home base station (110) connected to the fixed network. The call is routed in response to a routing indication which is included in the called number of the mobile terminal depending on the location of the mobile terminal. In this way, network operators may direct calls over the fixed network in preference to the mobile network, thereby relieving the mobile network. A single telephone number can also be used for the combined cordless phone and mobile phone.

  • Patent number: 6925074
Abstract: A mobile telecommunications network is proposed with an access network portion (10) having several base station systems (101) that can communicate with a core network portion (20). The base station systems are adapted to communicate with mobile terminals (1) over a licensed public mobile network air interface and with the core network portion over a predetermined network interface. The network also includes at least one local base station system (104, 105, 106) that is arranged to communicate with the core network portion over the predetermined network interface. This local base station system is further adapted to communicate with mobile terminals over an unlicensed radio interface (11). The local base station system makes use of an existing fixed network based on IP.

  • Patent number: 6914911
Abstract: The combination of narrowband applications with broadband transport may be enabled with a tri-level nodal system in which a narrowband node (e.g., a telecommunications node) may provide switching intelligence to the switching fabric of multiple broadband nodes (e.g., media gateways). The switching intelligence is provided via an intermediate node (e.g., mediation logic) that emulates a switch interface for the narrowband node and translates circuit-based addresses/routing instructions to packet-based addresses/routing instructions. This translation equates to a mapping of address(es) in a first address space to address(es) in a second address space in order to utilize the address(es) of the second address space for propagating communications on a broadband transport mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6775266
Abstract: ATM is used as a transport and switching mechanism in a hybrid STM/ATM network (20), while the signaling remains normal narrowband signaling. The narrowband signaling is transported on permanent paths over ATM connections, and the narrowband speech channels are transported on ATM and switched on a “per call basis” (on-demand) through an ATM switch. The hybrid STM/ATM network has an access node (22) which services narrowband terminals and which generates a signaling message in connection with call setup. A translator (50) formats the first signaling message into ATM cells so that the first signaling message can be routed through an ATM switch (40) to a circuit switched (STM) node (30). The circuit switched node (PSTN/ISDN) sets up a physical connection for the call and generates a further signaling message for the call, the further signaling message pertaining to the physical connection.

  • Patent number: 6198729
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for telecommunications and a device for that method. A first time slot is assigned for a first channel (2) between a first local exchange (LEA) to which a first subscriber (A) is connected or is being connected, and a second local exchange (LEB) to which a second subscriber (B) is connected or is being connected. A second time slot is assigned for a second channel (4) between the first local exchange (LEA) and a third local exchange (LEC) to which a third subscriber (C) is connected or is being connected. The first subscriber (A) makes a request that the second subscriber (B) and the third subscriber (C) shall continue to be or shall become connected, while the first subscriber (A) is disconnected. According to the invention, a transmitter (16) sends at least one tone in one of the time slots, a timer (17) is started and a receiver (15) listens in the other time slot.
