  • Publication number: 20120209946
Abstract: The subject disclosure is directed towards a background transfer service that provides platform-level support for third party applications to queue data transfers to run in the background, including when the application is not running in the foreground. Applications may thus perform downloading and uploading tasks in the background; however the background transfer service manages the data transfer requests so as to limit each background application's ability to interfere with foreground application operations, that is, by controlling resource usage according to one or more policies.

  • Publication number: 20120084314
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention may provide systems and methods for supporting restricted search capabilities in high-dimensional spaces. These example restricted search capabilities may allow for an unbiased search that is simply restricted to those regions of interest to a decision maker. It will be appreciated that a restricted search does not mean that additional constraints, such as preference or biasing information, are utilized to reduce the search space into some feasible sub-space of the original optimization problem. Instead, the example restricted search may limit the search to a certain sub-space of the full multi-dimensional tradeoff space.

  • Publication number: 20100049538
Abstract: A method for selecting a next action includes reading transaction data, determining insights and relationships between a first entity and a second entity from the collected transaction data. Once these relationships and insights have been determined, the possibility of a future event occurring in one of a number of selected time periods can be determined using a predictive time-to-event component. A system for selecting a next action includes a memory for storing transaction data, an insight/relationship determination module, and a predictive time-to-event module. The memory, the insight/relationship determination module and the predictive time-to-event module carry out the above method. A programmable media having an instruction set can also cause a machine to carry out the above method.

  • Publication number: 20090271245
Abstract: A computer-implemented method described for facilitating selection of an assortment of products to offer for sale. The method includes receiving transaction data representing characteristics of a plurality of commercial transactions including a first product and a second product. Product attribute data representing attributes for at least the two products are also received. Substitution demand data for the second product is estimated which represents demand for the second product given the first product is not available, the estimation being based on the transaction data and product attribute data.

  • Publication number: 20090164274
Abstract: Methods and related system are described for making decisions. A described method includes selecting a choice from the available choices, receiving an outcome relating to the selected choice, and automatically learning from the received outcome by incorporating the received outcome into subsequent steps of selecting a choice. The method may also include calculating estimated probabilities associated with the each choice using Bayesian networks. The automated learning can be based on a learning rate which is variable with time, and influences the degree on which prior outcomes are relied upon when calculating an estimated probability associated with a choice. The learning rate can be a function of time and an estimate of drift of the probability associated with the selected choice.

  • Patent number: 7354272
Abstract: An arithmetical manipulative device comprises a plurality of tiles, each tile having an upper surface, a lower surface, a first end and a second end, and a connector member for connecting the first end of one tile to the second end of a neighboring tile. The connector member is configured such that the one tile and the neighboring tile are pivotable relative to each other between a position wherein the upper surface of the one tile lies substantially adjacent the upper surface of the neighboring tile and the lower surface of the one tile lies substantially adjacent the lower surface of the neighboring tile. Further, the connector member is releasably connected to at least the one tile or the neighboring tile to permit a selected number of tiles to be serially assembled with respect to each other. The invention is also for a method for making arithmetical calculations.
